Abstract

This is a review of quantum methods for machine learning problems that consists of two parts. The first part, “quantum tools”, presented some of the fundamentals and introduced several quantum tools based on known quantum search algorithms. This second part of the review presents several classification problems in machine learning that can be accelerated with quantum subroutines. We have chosen supervised learning tasks as typical classification problems to illustrate the use of quantum methods for classification.

This is a review of quantum methods for machine learning problems that consists of two parts. The first part, “quantum tools”, presents the fundamentals of qubits, quantum registers, and quantum states, introduces important quantum tools based on known quantum search algorithms and SWAP-test, and discusses the basic quantum procedures used for quantum search methods. The second part, “quantum classification algorithms”, introduces several classification problems that can be accelerated by using quantum subroutines and discusses the quantum methods used for classification.

Quantum machine learning for data scientists

Dawid Kopczyk

This text aims to present and explain quantum machine learning algorithms to a data scientist in an accessible and consistent way. The algorithms and equations presented are not written in rigorous mathematical fashion, instead, the pressure is put on examples and step by step explanation of difficult topics. This contribution gives an overview of selected quantum machine learning algorithms, however there is also a method of scores extraction for quantum PCA algorithm proposed as well as a new cost function in feed-forward quantum neural networks is introduced. The text is divided into four parts: the first part explains the basic quantum theory, then quantum computation and quantum computer architecture are explained in section two. The third part presents quantum algorithms which will be used as subroutines in quantum machine learning algorithms. Finally, the fourth section describes quantum machine learning algorithms with the use of knowledge accumulated in previous parts.

Classification with Quantum Machine Learning: A Survey

Zainab Abohashima, Mohamed Elhoseny, Essam Halim Houssein +1 more

Due to the superiority and noteworthy progress of Quantum Computing (QC) in a lot of applications such as cryptography, chemistry, Big data, machine learning, optimization, Internet of Things (IoT), Blockchain, communication, and many more. Fully towards to combine classical machine learning (ML) with Quantum Information Processing (QIP) to build a new field in the quantum world is called Quantum Machine Learning (QML) to solve and improve problems that displayed in classical machine learning (e.g. time and energy consumption, kernel estimation). The aim of this paper presents and summarizes a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art advances in Quantum Machine Learning (QML). Especially, recent QML classification works. Also, we cover about 30 publications that are published lately in Quantum Machine Learning (QML). we propose a classification scheme in the quantum world and discuss encoding methods for mapping classical data to quantum data. Then, we provide quantum subroutines and some methods of Quantum Computing (QC) in improving performance and speed up of classical Machine Learning (ML). And also some of QML applications in various fields, challenges, and future vision will be presented.

Classification problem solving using quantum machine learning mechanisms

Alina O. Savchuk, Nonna N. Shapovalova

Due to the similarity of the computational and probabilistic nature of quantum computing and machine learning, the idea arose to optimize the learning process using quantum methods. There are both fundamentally new algorithms, such as HHL, and quantum-improved ones: QPCA, QSVM. In this article, we will look at the QSVM algorithm step by step, starting from the basics described in section 2 and gradually delving into the composition of the algorithm. Thus, after the basics, we will consider the quantum phase estimation, which is part of the HHL algorithm, and then the QSVM algorithm, the component of which is the HHL. We also will consider the QPCA algorithm, which can be applied before the QSVM algorithm to reduce the dimension of the data sample. In this way, we explore the fundamental difference between classical algorithms and their quantum counterparts. We also implement the QSVM method in practice and compare the obtained practical results with theory. As a result, we obtained high quality of accuracy (100 %) compared to the classical SVM (83 %) on a data sample of dimension 72. However, we found out that the learning time on a quantum device is far from ideal (it can reach 5 min for a sample of this size). The study aims to theoretically argue or disprove the hypothesis about the efficiency of quantum computing for machine learning algorithms. The object of research is the programming of quantum computers. The research subject is the study of quantum computing mechanisms for the implementation of machine learning problems. The research result is a software module that allows evaluating the efficiency of the classification task on a quantum computer. It also can be used to compare the results obtained from classical and quantum devices. Research methods: theoretical analysis of the foundations of quantum computing: principles of superposition and entanglement, linear algebra, probability theory over complex numbers; building a model of one qubit and multi-qubit system; research of quantum machine learning algorithms’ work principles and their complexity; empirical comparison of quantum machine learning methods with their classical counterparts.

Quantum Support Vector Machine for Classification Task: A Review

Muhamad Akrom

Quantum computing has emerged as a promising technology capable of solving complex computational problems more efficiently than classical computers. Among the various quantum algorithms developed, the Quantum Support Vector Machine (QSVM) has gained significant attention for its potential to enhance machine learning tasks, particularly classification. This review paper explores the theoretical foundations, methodologies, and potential advantages of QSVM for classification tasks. We discuss the quantum computing principles underpinning QSVM, compare them with classical support vector machines, and review recent advancements and applications. Finally, we highlight the challenges and prospects of QSVM in the context of quantum machine learning.

Quantum Machine Learning: A Case Study of Grover’s Algorithm

Bikram Khanal, Pablo Rivas, Javier Orduz +1 more

The complexity of searching algorithms in classical computing is a perpetual researched field. Quantum computers and quantum algorithms can compute these problems faster, and, in addition, machine learning implementation could provide a prominent way to boost quantum technology. We call quantum machine learning to this novel set of tools coming from artificial intelligence and quantum mechanics. To achieve our purpose, we focus on applications on quantum machine learning; in particular, we propose a review and exploration of topics such as variational quantum algorithms, kernel methods, and a review of Grover’s algorithm (GA) as a quantum classifier. We start with the GA exploration to achieve this goal, which is a quantum search algorithm that achieves quadratic speedup over optimal classical search implementation. This paper implements a GA exploration that includes a concept summary and implementation, considering only AND, XOR, and OR gates. We also discuss potential in quantum machine learning.
