An optical soliton pair among absorbing three-level atoms

Hichem Eleuch, R. Bennaceur

The motion of a pair of solitons propagating through an absorbing three-level system in the lambda configuration is analysed. In the course of this analytic analysis, the existence condition for solitary wave pairs is derived. This condition allows for two possible velocities of the soliton pair.

Matched Optical Solitary Waves for Three- and Five-Level Systems

F. T. Hioe, R. Grobe

Exact analytic results are presented that give a general solution for a pair of solitary waves which can propagate through a three- and a five-level system with their shapes invariant. These solitary waves vary widely in shape and form: from ones for which the pulses have similar shape to ones which have very different but "complementary" shapes. A general type of solitary-wave pair which is insensitive to small perturbations is identified.

Dissipative solitons in 4-level atomic optical systems

Nuno A. Silva, Miguel Gomes, João C. Costa +3 more

In this work we develop a theoretical model to describe the propagation of an optical pulse in a 4-level atomic system. We investigate the existence of dissipative soliton solutions and analyze the stability of these solitary waves, comparing the analytical results with computational simulations based on the effective (1+1)-dimensional model derived from the Maxwell-Bloch equation under the slowly-varying envelope approximation.

Optical solitary waves in three-level media: effects of different dipole moments

A. S. Rosenthal, Talal Ghannam

The exact electric polarization operator of the Maxwell-Bloch equations for a three-level Λ-type system is derived without assuming equality of the transition dipole moments. Numerical solution of the resulting solitary wave equations yields a richer spectrum than found earlier for identical dipole moments [Hioe and Grobe, Phys. Rev. Lett.73, 2559 (1994)]. The two components of the new solitary waves each have a zero-pulse area and take the form of modulated oscillations.

Exact solitary-wave solution of short different-wavelength optical pulses in many-level atomic absorbers

Solitary waves and atomic population transfer via the continuum

F. T. Hioe, C. E. Carroll

Exact analytic results are presented that represent a pair of solitary waves that can propagate through an atomic medium with their shapes invariant while producing transfer of atoms or molecules from one bound state to another via a continuum. The speed of the waves and the amount of population transfer are given in terms of the wave amplitudes. A general (not solitary wave) solution for the case of a single wave is presented, together with a nonlinear Beer's law of absorption.
