Abstract

Higher channel capacity and noise elimination are the key requirements for the implementation of long-distance quantum communication. As the additional degrees of freedom (DoF) of photons can be employed to achieve higher channel capacity and security beyond the polarizations DoF of photons, the photonic qubits are always employed as the flying qubits in quantum communication and quantum information processing. Here, exploiting the multiple DoFs of photons, we present an efficient quantum secure direct communication protocol based on the coding and manipulation of qubits on both the polarization and the orbital angular momentum of photons. Also, the numerical simulation is studied to further clarify the improvement of the channel capacity and the security. It is found that the channel capacity and the error rate (caused by eavesdropping) of the QSDC protocol which encoded on the polarization DoF and the OAM DoF is significantly higher than that of coding on only polarization DoF. We believe this work could provide more evidence for the applications of higher-dimensional qubits in quantum information science.

High-capacity quantum secure direct communication using hyper-entanglement of photonic qubits

Jiarui Cai, Ziwen Pan, Tie-Jun Wang +2 more

Hyper-entanglement is a system constituted by photons entangled in multiple degrees of freedom (DOF), being considered as a promising way of increasing channel capacity and guaranteeing powerful eavesdropping safeguard. In this work, we propose a coding scheme based on a 3-particle hyper-entanglement of polarization and orbital angular momentum (OAM) system and its application as a quantum secure direct communication (QSDC) protocol. The OAM values are specially encoded by Fibonacci sequence and the polarization carries information by defined unitary operations. The internal relations of the secret message enhances security due to principle of quantum mechanics and Fibonacci sequence. We also discuss the coding capacity and security property along with some simulation results to show its superiority and extensibility.

High-Capacity Quantum Secure Direct Communication With Orbital Angular Momentum of Photons

Sichen Mi, Tie-Jun Wang, Guang-Sheng Jin +1 more

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) states of photons span a high-dimensional Hilbert space, and by using it, higher information capacity and enhanced security can be achieved for both classical communication and quantum key distribution. In this work, we propose a feasible basis-independent encoding scheme for OAM states and show its application in high-dimensional quantum secure direct communication, which enables direct transmission of meaningful messages, in addition to random secret key establishing. Imperfections of optical components may reduce the efficiency of the encoding scheme and, thus, the channel capacity. We discuss the optimal input distribution under realistic conditions to achieve maximal mutual information and an alternative solution using a different set of mutually unbiased bases in the case of a prime-dimensional quantum system.

Measurement-device-independent quantum secure direct communication based on quantum cover channel and multiple degrees of freedom of hyperentanglement

Tian-Jiao Pan, Ri‐Gui Zhou, Xiao-Xue Zhang

Abstract Quantum secure direct communication (QSDC) achieves direct and secure transmission of information which does not need a pre-shared key. To improve the practical reliability of QSDC systems, Measurement-device-independent quantum secure direct communication protocol (MDI-QSDC) have emerged, which provide a more secure communication method by eliminating the dependence on measurement devices. This paper proposes an MDI-QSDC protocol based on polarization-spatial-orbital angular momentum mode hyperentanglement and quantum covert channel (QCC). This protocol can transmit 6-bit information in one round of communication, eliminating security vulnerability and information leakage associated with measurement devices. Compared with the previous MDI-QSDC protocols, this paper further clarifies the enhancement of channel capacity and security through numerical simulation studies. Further, the protocol introduces imperceptible QCC on polarization-spatial mode, which is significantly more secure than direct coding on polarization-spatial mode only. Based on the above features, the potential of the proposed high-capacity MDI-QSDC protocol in quantum communication is highlighted.

The analysis of efficiency for high-dimensional quantum secure direct communications under atmospheric turbulence

Jia-Lei Niu, Xin-Chang Liu

Abstract Recently, there is a tremendous attention on the high-dimensional quantum information processing using the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photons. It provides an efficient method to increase the capacity of quantum channel. However, OAM is very vulnerable to atmospheric turbulence, resulting in phase distortion and, therefore, leading to information leakage during quantum communications. On the other hand, quantum secure direct communications (QSDC) define an efficient way of information exchange through quantum channels directly. Here in this work, by combining the applications of OAM states of photons as the information carrier with the QSDC, we analyze the performance of the high-dimensional quantum secure direct communication protocol based on encoding the information on the single photon OAM state under the condition of free space channel. Numerically, we discussed the performance of OAM states QSDC under atmospheric turbulence, and mainly calculated the influence of cross-talk caused by phase fluctuation on the system. We draw the conclusion that under the weak turbulence, when the beam waist and the Fried parameter r become comparable, the information capacity will decrease sharply.

Mask-coding-assisted continuous-variable quantum direct communication with orbital angular momentum multiplexing

Zhengwen Cao, Yujie Wang, Geng Chai +2 more

Quantum secure direct communication (QSDC) is a approach of communication to transmit secret messages base on quantum mechanics. Different from the quantum key distribution, secret messages can be transmitted directly on quantum channel with QSDC. Higher channel capacity and noise suppression capabilities are key to achieving long-distance quantum communication. Here we report a continuous-variable QSDC scheme based on mask-coding and orbital angular momentum, in which the mask-coding is employed to protect the security of the transmitting messages and to suppression the influence of excess noise. And the combination of orbital angular momentum and the information block transmission can effectively improve the secrecy capacity. In the 800 information blocks * 1310 bits length 10-km experiment, the results show that the statistical average of bit error rate has decreased by 36% and reached 0.38% comparing to existing solutions, and the system excess noise is 0.0184 SNU, and the final secrecy capacity is 6.319 * 106 bps. Therefore, this scheme reduces error bits while increasing secrecy capacity, providing a solution for long-distance large-scale quantum communication.

Quantum secure direct communication based on orbital angular momentum

Hong Lai, Liling Zhang, Yanrong Zhu

The existing quantum secure direct communication (QSDC) protocols mainly make use of the spin angular momentum and entangled photons, to realize direct transmission of confidential information. But those protocols' capacity is low, only one-bit information. On the other hand, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of a photon can be theoretically evaluated from minus infinity to infinity, and the angular momentum states of different orbits are orthogonal to each other. Given that, in this paper, we propose a quantum secure direct communication scheme based on OAM. Specifically, taking OAM of photons as the information carrier, the data of information is segmented and high-capacity coding in quantum secure direct communication is realized through the segmentation of sector states.
