Abstract

In this talk we would like to review developments of AdS/CFT correspondence, which plays significant roles in the developments of string theory. In particular, we will focus on the recent active subjects on the connection of AdS/CFT and quantum information, which leads to the idea of emergence space from quantum entanglement.

6.S899 Project Report Tensor Networks, Quantum Error Correction, and AdS/CFT

John C. Napp

In recent years, the high energy physics community has become increasingly interested in entanglement, especially since it seems that, in some sense, spacetime itself may arise from entanglement [1]. Since dealing with entanglement is a strong point of quantum information theory, it’s perhaps not surprising that quantum information is working its way into some work in this area, including work in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, a duality between quantum theories of gravity in d + 1 dimensions and conformal field theories in d dimensions. In this report, I survey at a very schematic level some recent work which lies in the intersection of quantum information theory (broadly speaking) and the AdS/CFT correspondence, especially in relation to tensor network models of holography. For completion, I won’t assume background which wasn’t covered in class, and so I briefly review relevant features of AdS/CFT and tensor networks.

A note on bulk locality and covariance in AdS/CFT

Slava Emelyanov

This paper studies a recently proposed relation between the emergence of bulk locality in AdS/CFT and the theory of quantum error correction. We show that if this relation is indeed realized in AdS/CFT, then bulk covariance is broken in the semi-classical limit.

Entanglement Entropy and AdS/CFT

Koushik Bar, Supervisors Dr. Sunandan Gangopadhyay, Prasanta Kumar Panigrahi

These features the study of conformal quantum field theories, in dimensions greater than two dimension and very special case of two dimensions. Over the last two decades, the understanding and mathematical formulation of such theories has developed to a very mature state, and conformal field theory (CFT) has in uenced both mathematics and physics. As such, it can be considered a prototype example for a constructive interplay between these two subjects. The main feature of a conformal field theory is the invariance under conformal transformations. We also review the development in the field of entanglement entropy, the holographic aspect of it, and the AdS/CFT conjuncture. Describe the Ruy-Takayangai conjecture of Entanglement Entropy and study the reconstruction of the AdS metric using the same for two different case, which are, 1+1 CFT in Infinite Line, and 1+1 CFT in compact circle.

Entanglement in High-Energy Physics: An Overview

Mohammed Nadir

This abstract explores the entwined realms of quantum field theory, holography, and the AdS/CFT correspondence, converging upon the enigmatic phenomenon of entanglement within high-energy physics (HEP). At the core of this narrative lies the concept of entanglement entropy—a profound measure of quantum entanglement that threads the connections between quantum information, correlations, and the very architecture of spacetime. As the journey unfolds, the AdS/CFT correspondence illuminates entanglement’s holographic nature, decoding its role in deciphering the enigmas of HEP. Bell’s inequality emerges as a lighthouse, probing the non-local essence of entanglement and challenging the classical boundaries of reality. Quantum cryptography emerges as a practical extension, harnessing the unique attributes of entanglement for secure communication. The tensor product formalism weaves together the quantum tapestry, while gravity—nature’s sculptor of spacetime—molds the dynamics of entanglement within HEP. This abstract paves the path for a chapter that traverses based on original findings, unraveling the secrets of entanglement’s significance within the intricate fabric of high-energy physics. The Nobel Prize in Physics 2022, awarded to Alain Aspect, John F. Clauser, and Anton Zeilinger, enriches this narrative. Their experiments solidify entanglement’s non-locality, bridging the realms of quantum mechanics and HEP. This abstract encapsulates the entangled narrative and its dialog with gravity.

Momentum-space entanglement and the gravity of entanglement in AdS/CFT

McDermott, Michael

In the first part of this thesis we explore the entanglement structure of relativistic field theories in momentum space. We discuss a Wilsonian path integral formulation and a perturbative approach. Using perturbation theory we obtain results for specific quantum field theories. These are understood through scaling and decoupling properties of field theories. Convergence of the perturbation theory taking loop diagrams into account is also discussed. We then discuss the entanglement structure in systems where Lorentz invariance is broken by a Fermi surface. The Fermi surface helps the convergence of perturbation theory and entanglement of modes near the Fermi surface is shown to be amplified, even in the presence of a large momentum cutoff. In the second part of this thesis we explore the connection between entanglement and gravity in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. We show that there are certain thermodynamic-like relations common to all conformal field theories, which when mapped via the AdS/CFT correspondence to the bulk are tantamount to Einstein's equations, to lowest order in the metric.

AdS/CFT Correspondence in Condensed Matter

Antonio S. T. Pires

The goal of these notes is to introduce, in a very elementary way, the idea of the anti de-Sitter/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence to condensed matter physicists. This theory relates a gravity theory in a (d+1)- dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime to a strongly-coupled d- dimensional quantum field theory living on its boundary. The AdS/CFT correspondence can be used to study finite temperature real time processes, such as response functions and dynamics far from equilibrium in quantum critical points in condensed matter systems. Computation of these quantities is reduced to solving classical gravitational equations in one higher dimension than the original theory.
