Storage of telecom wavelength heralded single photons in a fiber cavity quantum memory

Kent Bonsma-Fisher, Ramy Tannous, Daniel Poitras +5 more

We demonstrate the storage and retrieval of heralded single photons in a fiber-based cavity quantum memory. The photons are stored, and retrieved, from the memory using quantum frequency conversion which switches the photon into, and out of, resonance with the cavity. The photons, generated in the telecom O-band with a bandwidth of 81 GHz, are retrieved from the memory with a 1/ e lifetime of 1.64 µs, or 32.8 cavity round trips. We show that non-classical photon statistics remain for 70 round trips. The internal memory efficiency after 0.5 µs of storage is 10.9 ± 0.5%; a coupling efficiency of 60% into the memory cavity yields a total efficiency of 6.0 ± 0.3%. These results mark a crucial step forward in the development of fiber-based quantum memories, and high-bandwidth memories operating at telecom wavelengths, with applications to photon source multiplexing and fiber-based quantum networking.

Efficient quantum memory for heralded single photons generated by cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric downconversion

Tseng, Yu-Chih, Yan-Cheng Wei, Ying-Cheng Chen

We interface a spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) crystal and a cold atomic ensemble and demonstrate a highly efficient quantum memory through polarization-encoded single-photon qubits. Specifically, narrowband heralded single photons from a cavity-enhanced SPDC source is stored using cold atomic ensemble, with ~70% storage-and-retrieval efficiency and ~10$μ$s storage time at 50% efficiency. To prevent the degradation after storage, we also manipulate the single-photon wave profile so that the retrieved non-classical nature of single photon is preserved. On the other hand, the dual-rail storage is used for storing polarization-encoded qubits, and the corrected fidelity of flying qubits after storage reaches ~97%. The results pave the way toward large-scale quantum network.

Efficient quantum memory for photonic polarization qubits generated by cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric downconversion

Yu-Chih Tseng, Yan-Cheng Wei, Ying-Cheng Chen

Quantum memories, for storing then retrieving photonic quantum states on demand, are crucial components for scalable quantum technologies. Spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) with a nonlinear crystal is the most widely used process for generating entangled photon pairs or heralded single photons. Despite the desirability of efficient quantum memories for SPDC-generated single photons, the storage and retrieval efficiencies achieved with this approach still fall below 50%, a threshold value for practical applications. Here, we report an efficiency of > 70% for the storage of heralded single photons generated by cavity-enhanced SPDC using atomic quantum memories based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). In addition, we demonstrate the quantum memory for single-photon polarization qubits with a fidelity of ∼96%. This result paves the way towards the development of large-scale quantum networks.
