Enhancement of Atom-Field Transfer of Coherence in a Two-Photon Micromaser Assisted by a Classical Field

Abstract

Abstract: We investigate the transfer of coherence from atoms to a cavity field initially in a statistical mixture within a two-photon micromaser arrangement. The field is progressively modified from a maximum entropy state (thermal state) towards an almost pure state (entropy close to zero) due to its interaction with atoms sent across the cavity. We trace over the atomic variables, i.e., the atomic states are not measured and recorded by a detector after they leave the cavity. We show that by applying an external classical driving field it is possible to substantially increase the field purity without the need of previously preparing the atoms in a superposition of their energy eigenstates. We also discuss some of the nonclassical statistical properties of the resulting field.

Transfer of coherence from atoms to mixed field states in a two-photon lossless micromaser

A. F. Gomes, José Antonio Roversi, A. Vidiella-Barranco

We propose a two-photon micromaser-based scheme for the generation of a non-classical state from a mixed state. We conclude that a faster, as well as a higher degree of field purity, is achieved in comparison to one-photon processes. We investigate the statistical properties of the resulting field states, for initial thermal and (phase-diffused) coherent states. Quasiprobabilities are employed to characterize the state of the generated fields

Two-Photon Micromaser with Initial Atomic Coherence

Sun Wei-Hui, Si-de Du, Chen Xiao-Shuang

We investigate the quantum dynamics of a two-photon micromaser pumped by atoms injected in the superposition state of the upper and intermediate levels. We simulate a master equation governing the system by the Monte Carlo wavefunction approach and analyse the steady-state behaviour as a function of the atomic transit time. The atomic coherence can effectively enhance the intensity and sub-Poissonian of the cavity field as compared with the atomic mixture. It is also discovered that the phase of the cavity field can be shifted by adjusting the detuning between the atom and field. This result shows that it is possible to manipulate the phase of the cavity field by detuning, due to atomic coherence.

Coherently driven and coherently pumped micromaser

Federico Casagrande, ALFREDO LULLI, V. Santagostino

We investigate the dynamics of a micromaser continuously driven by a resonant coherent field and pumped by atoms injected in superposition states. We formulate a master equation for the system, and by a Monte Carlo wave-function approach we describe the steady-state behavior as a function of atomic-transit time or driving-field intensity. The combined action of polarized atoms and driving field can lead to enhancement or suppression of coherence in system dynamics, including nonclassical effects such as quadrature squeezing, sub-Poissonian photon statistics, and revival of Rabi oscillations, as well as to shifts of the induced cavity-field phase. These results show the possibility of manipulating both the photon number and the phase of the cavity field.

Atomic correlations and cavity field decoherence in a strongly driven micromaser

Federico Casagrande, ALFREDO LULLI

In a micromaser where a classical field strongly drives the atoms while they cross the cavity, remarkable atom–atom correlations show up at steady state, which vanish much faster than dissipative decay. Hence we consider atom pair correlation measurements in which the detection of the first probe atom prepares a mesoscopic superposition state of the cavity field, that entangles with a second probe atom. The conditional probabilities for the latter atomic detection provide a description of the decoherence of the superposition state, occurring in an open system in the presence of pumping, driving, dissipative, and thermal effects. The decoherence rate scales as the squared interaction time, that sets the separation in phase space between the superposition components, whereas the quantum coherence is unaffected by the atomic pumping. Hence we further investigate the system when the cavity is not pumped. Starting the correlation measurements from a thermal state, we can describe the effect of temperature on decoherence. Starting from a vacuum state, the superposition states are maximally separated Schrodinger cat states, whose decoherence can thus be monitored.

Coherently Driven Micromaser Pumped by Atoms in Superposition States

Federico Casagrande, ALFREDO LULLI, V. Santagostino

Abstract By a Monte Carlo wave function approach we describe the dynamics of a coherently driven micromaser pumped by coherently prepared atoms. The system can exhibit nonclassical effects such as quadrature squeezing, sub-Poissonian photonstatistics, and Rabi oscillations revival. The interplay between driving field and polarised atoms allows manipulating both the photon number and the phase of the cavity field. By varying either the atomic transit time or the injected field intensity, the coherence of the system dynamics can be enhanced or even suppressed, whereas the induced cavity field phase can be shifted.
