Coherently Driven Micromaser Pumped by Atoms in Superposition States

Abstract

Abstract By a Monte Carlo wave function approach we describe the dynamics of a coherently driven micromaser pumped by coherently prepared atoms. The system can exhibit nonclassical effects such as quadrature squeezing, sub-Poissonian photonstatistics, and Rabi oscillations revival. The interplay between driving field and polarised atoms allows manipulating both the photon number and the phase of the cavity field. By varying either the atomic transit time or the injected field intensity, the coherence of the system dynamics can be enhanced or even suppressed, whereas the induced cavity field phase can be shifted.

Coherently driven and coherently pumped micromaser

Federico Casagrande, ALFREDO LULLI, V. Santagostino

We investigate the dynamics of a micromaser continuously driven by a resonant coherent field and pumped by atoms injected in superposition states. We formulate a master equation for the system, and by a Monte Carlo wave-function approach we describe the steady-state behavior as a function of atomic-transit time or driving-field intensity. The combined action of polarized atoms and driving field can lead to enhancement or suppression of coherence in system dynamics, including nonclassical effects such as quadrature squeezing, sub-Poissonian photon statistics, and revival of Rabi oscillations, as well as to shifts of the induced cavity-field phase. These results show the possibility of manipulating both the photon number and the phase of the cavity field.

Two-Photon Micromaser with Initial Atomic Coherence

Sun Wei-Hui, Si-de Du, Chen Xiao-Shuang

We investigate the quantum dynamics of a two-photon micromaser pumped by atoms injected in the superposition state of the upper and intermediate levels. We simulate a master equation governing the system by the Monte Carlo wavefunction approach and analyse the steady-state behaviour as a function of the atomic transit time. The atomic coherence can effectively enhance the intensity and sub-Poissonian of the cavity field as compared with the atomic mixture. It is also discovered that the phase of the cavity field can be shifted by adjusting the detuning between the atom and field. This result shows that it is possible to manipulate the phase of the cavity field by detuning, due to atomic coherence.

Coherence effects in a driven micromaser pumped by polarized atoms

Federico Casagrande, ALFREDO LULLI

We describe the dynamics of a micromaser pumped by atoms in superposition states and driven by a resonant coherent field. By a quantum jump approach to the master equation solution, we show how the coherences excited in the cavity mode affect the nonclassical steady-state behaviour of the system, in a way that depends on the relative phase between the polarized atoms and the driving field. Both the mean photon number and the phase of the cavity field can be controlled via the atomic transit time and pump rate, or the driving field intensity. The predicted coherence and phase competition effects can show up in the statistics of the populations of outgoing atoms.

Dynamics of a coherently driven micromaser by the Monte Carlo wavefunction approach

Luigi Bonacina, Federico Casagrande, ALFREDO LULLI

Using a Monte Carlo wavefunction approach we investigate the dynamics of a micromaser driven by a resonant coherent field. At steady state, for increasing interaction times, the system exhibits driven Rabi oscillations, followed by collapse as the range of micromaser trapping states is approached. The system operates in regimes ranging from a strong to a weak amplifier. In the strong-amplifier regime the cavity mode shows a preferred phase and can exhibit quadrature squeezing and sub-Poissonian photon statistics. In the weak-amplifier regime the cavity mode has no preferred phase, is super-Poissonian and is influenced by trapping effects; no revival of Rabi oscillations occurs. The main predictions can be compared with experimental measurements on the populations of atoms leaving the cavity.

Solvable model of a strongly driven micromaser

Pavel Lougovski, Federico Casagrande, ALFREDO LULLI +3 more

We study the dynamics of a micromaser where the pumping atoms are strongly driven by a resonant classical field during their transit through the cavity mode. We derive a master equation for this strongly driven micromaser, involving the contributions of the unitary atom-field interactions and the dissipative effects of a thermal bath. We find analytical solutions for the temporal evolution and the steady state of this system by means of phase-space techniques, providing an unusual solvable model of an open quantum system, including pumping and decoherence. We derive closed expressions for all relevant expectation values, describing the statistics of the cavity field and the detected atomic levels. The transient regime shows the buildup of mixtures of mesoscopic fields evolving towards a super-Poissonian steady-state field that, nevertheless, yields atomic correlations that exhibit stronger nonclassical features than the conventional micromaser.

Quantum revivals in micromasers

Ewan M. Wright, P. Meystre

A distinctive signature of the granulated nature of the electromagnetic field is the revivals known to occur in the dynamics of a two-level atom interacting with a single-field mode (Jaynes-Cummings model). The development of high-Q single-mode cavities combined with progress in Rydberg atom spectroscopy has led to a possibility of verifying these predictions. Revival experiments using micromasers have been performed by Walther et al. Here the cavity mode is first allowed to reach a steady state, and then probe atoms are injected into the resonator. By measuring their state as they exit the cavity, one can infer the state of the field. We show that the micromaser experiences Jaynes-Cummingslike revivals when the pump parameter θ is varied. However, in contrast to the conventional Jaynes-Cummings situation, which considers initially coherent fields, the micromaser photon statistics are usually not Poissonian and depend sensitively on θ. The micromaser revivals cannot be explained by a semiclassical theory or linearized quantum fluctuations about the semiclassical solution. Rather, an exact quantum treatment, considering fully the granularity of the cavity mode, is required.
