Abstract

Abstract A theory of optical two-component pulse of self-induced transparency in a dispersive medium has been developed. Using the generalized version of the perturbative expansion method, the system of material equations for an ensemble of two-level atoms and the wave equation in a dispersive medium are reduced to coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. A solution in the form of a phase-modulated two-component $$0\pi $$ pulse is obtained. The pulse components oscillate at the sum and difference frequencies in the vicinity of the carrier-wave frequency. Explicit analytical expressions for the parameters and formation conditions of a nonlinear wave, which depend on the dispersive properties of the medium, are presented. Known results are obtained for a particular case.

A two-component phase-modulated soliton in a medium with a two-photon resonant transition

Guram T. Adamashvili, Nugzar T. Adamashvili, M. D. Peikrishvili +1 more

A theory of optical self-induced transparency for a two-component phase-modulated soliton in a medium with a two-photon resonant transition has been developed. It is shown that a two-photon two-component soliton oscillating at the sum and difference frequencies in the vicinity of the carrier frequency can be formed under these conditions. Explicit analytical expressions are given for the form and parameters of non-linear wave under experimental conditions.

Dissipative solitons of self-induced transparency

Guram T. Adamashvili, David J. Kaup, A. Knorr

A theory of dispersive soliton of the self-induced transparency in a medium consisting of atoms or semiconductor quantum dots of two types is considered. A two-component medium is modeled by a set of two-level atoms of two types embedded into a conductive host material. These types of atoms correspond to passive atoms (attenuator atoms) and active atoms (amplifier atoms) with inverse population of the energetic levels. The complete solution is given of the Maxwell--Bloch equations for ensembles of two-type atoms with different parameters and different initial conditions by inverse scattering transform. The solutions of the Maxwell--Bloch equations for many-component atomic systems by inverse scattering transform are also discussed. The influence of the difference between dipole moments of atoms, the longitudinal and transverse relaxation times, pumping, and conductivity on the soliton is taken into account by means of perturbation theory. The memory effects are described in terms of generalized non-Markovian optical Bloch equations. The condition of a balance between the energy supplied and lost is obtained.

Self-induced transparency solitons in a nonlinear Kerr host

Tsun-Yee Wang, Sien Chi

We have found a steady-state solution for a pulse propagating in imhogeneously broadened resonant two-level atoms embedded in a dispersive and nonlinear Kerr lossless host medium. The pulse is of an unchirped hyperbolic-secant form with a linear spatial phase delay. There are several salient features in this solution which are different from the results obtained previously. First, for the given parameters of the medium and carrier frequency, the group velocity, the amplitude, and the pulse width are uniquely determined. Second, the group velocity is independent of the density of the resonant atoms. Third, the solution exists in the positive dispersion region, which is different from solitons in fibers.

Self-induced transparency in a dispersive and nonlinear Kerr host medium

The solution is of an unchirped hyperbolic-secant form with a linear spatial phase delay. The features of the solution are (i) the group velocity, the amplitude, and the width of the pulse are uniquely determined for given parameters of the medium and the carrier frequency; (ii) the group velocity is independent of the density of the resonant atoms; and (iii) the solution can exist in the positive dispersion region.

Self-induced-transparency soliton propagation under the influence of a far-from-resonance transition line

Victor V. Kozlov, Evald E. Fradkin

The results of theoretical research of the propagation effect of an ultrashort optical pulse under the conditions of coherent interaction with two resonant transitions are presented. One of the transitions is tuned to exact resonance with the pulse carrier frequency; the other is distanced by much more than the pulse spectral width, thus the adiabatic following approximation may be applied to it. The interaction between the pulse and the far-from-resonance transition is described by the wave equation with the nonlinear index of refraction in the form of the Lorentz function of the field amplitude. This wave equation is solved together with the Bloch equations for the exact resonant transition. The solution in the form of the stationary phase-modulated pulse is obtained, and (pi) -pulse of self-induced transparency is the special case of this solution. The obtained solution has the area under the pulse envelope less than (pi) , and with increasing the absorption coefficient of the far-from-resonance transition the pulse area decreases. The effect can be used for reducing the transparency threshold of the resonant medium below (pi) .
