By exploiting the quantised nature of light, we demonstrate a sub-shot-noise scanning optical transmittance microscope. Our microscope demonstrates, with micron scale resolution, a factor of improvement in precision of 1.76(9) in transmittance estimation gained per probe photon relative to an optimal classical version at the same optical power. This would allow us to observe photosensitive samples with nearly twice the precision,without sacrificing image resolution or increasing optical power to improve signal-to-noise ratio. Realization of the first sub-shot-noise wide field microscope

Recently, several proof of principle experiments have demonstrated the advantages of quantum technologies over classical schemes. The present challenge is to surpass the limits of proof of principle demonstrations to approach real applications. This letter presents such an achievement in the field of quantum enhanced imaging. In particular, we describe the realization of a sub-shot-noise wide field microscope based on spatially multi-mode non-classical photon number correlations in twin beams. The microscope produces realtime images of 8000 pixels at full resolution, for a 500 μm2 field of view, with noise reduced to 80% of the shot noise level (for each pixel), which is suitable for absorption imaging of complex structures. By fast post-elaboration, specifically applying a quantum enhanced median filter, the noise can be further reduced (to <30% of the shot noise level) by setting a trade-off with the resolution, thus achieving the best sensitivity per incident photon reported in absorption microscopy. A new microscope instantly captures thousands of photons from faint objects with signal-to-noise ratios exceeding classical limits. Imaging of sensitive objects, such as live cells, limits the optical power that lasers can apply. Now, Alice Meda from Italy's INRIM and colleagues have developed a microscope that ’squeezes‘ light to overcome intensity-limiting shot noise caused by quantum fluctuations of photons. Their sub-shot-noise microscope uses a nonlinear crystal to generate two high correlated light beams impossible for classical waves. Microscale pixels recorded intensities when one beam strikes a sample can have their shot noise reduced by 20% by subtracting correlated patterns from the second reference beam. This quantum-enhanced noise reduction enables the microscope to operate for high sensitive, dynamic, wide field, Q imaging applications.

A practical model of twin-beam experiments for sub-shot-noise absorption measurements

Quantum-intensity-correlated twin beams of light can be used to measure absorption with precision beyond the classical shot-noise limit. The degree to which this can be achieved with a given estimator is defined by the quality of the twin-beam intensity correlations, which is quantified by the noise reduction factor. We derive an analytical model of twin-beam experiments, incorporating experimental parameters such as the relative detection efficiency of the beams, uncorrelated optical noise, and uncorrelated detector noise. We show that for twin beams without excessive noise, measured correlations can be improved by increasing the detection efficiency of each beam; notwithstanding, this may unbalance detection efficiency. However, for beams with excess intensity or other experimental noise, one should balance detection efficiency, even at the cost of reducing detection efficiency—we specifically define these noise conditions and verify our results with statistical simulation. This has application in design and optimization of absorption spectroscopy and imaging experiments.

Increasing the optical power in sub-shot noise precision measurements of absorption

The optical shot-noise limit of a laser beam represents the classical limit in precision and signal to noise ratio achievable in optical sensors and imaging systems. It is known that quantum states of light, such as squeezed light and quantum correlated twin beams can be used to enhance precision and signal to noise ratio to beyond this limit. This promises optical sensors with fundamentally superior performance to the state of the art. While quantum-enhanced signal to noise ratio has been demonstrated with macroscopic powers of squeezed probe beam, demonstrations of quantum enhanced precision have remained at extremely low powers of light (femto-Watts). Here we will give examples where increasing SNR with quantum light is not sufficient to increase precision and we will review proof of principle experiments that have demonstrated sub shot noise precision, including for absorption spectroscopy and imaging. We will also report our efforts to achieve this sub-shot-noise precision performance for transmission measurement with ~0.1mW of average probe power, equating to ~10W peak power in a pulsed experiment. Time permitting, we will discuss how integrated optics and integrated electronics enables 10s GHz bandwidth in the detection of squeezed light, for integrated quantum sensor technology.

For absorption imaging, optical noise is a limitation [1]. Photon counting experiments using correlated photon pair sources can achieve sub-shot noise imaging but are not scalable to high brightness [2]. While lowering the noise floor increases the signal-to-noise ratio without increasing the signal's power, enhancing the precision reduces the variance of estimates. In imaging, improved precision can lead to higher contrast images, allowing regions with similar values to be more easily distinguished due to smaller error bars [2].

Experimental Sub-shot Noise Quantum Imaging versus Differential Classical Imaging

Sub-Shot Noise quantum imaging is a novel quantum method allowing in principle to recover the image of a weak absorbing object, even if illuminated by a low photon flux, with a signal to noise ratio larger than classical imaging techniques. Here we present the first realization of a genuine quantum imaging schemes exploiting correlation of twin beams produced by Parametric Down conversion. We compare its performances with respect to the corresponding classical scheme, showing a clear improvement of the sensitivity in the reconstruction of the absorbtion profile of a weak object.
