Abstract

In this focused review we survey recent progress in the development of resource theories of nonclassical light. We introduce the resource theoretical approach, in particular how it pertains to bosonic/light fields, and discuss several different formulations of resource theories of nonclassical light.

Nonclassical light and metrological power: An introductory review

Kok Chuan Tan, Hyunseok Jeong

In this review, the authors introduce the notion of quantum nonclassicality of light and the role of nonclassicality in optical quantum metrology. The first part of this paper focuses on defining and characterizing the notion of nonclassicality and how it may be quantified in radiation fields. Several prominent examples of nonclassical light are also discussed. The second part of this paper deals with quantum metrology through the lens of nonclassicality. The authors introduce key concepts such as the Quantum Fisher information, the Cramér-Rao bound, the standard quantum limit, and the Heisenberg limit and discuss how nonclassical light may be exploited to beat classical limitations in high precision measurements. The discussion here will be largely theoretical, with some references to specific experimental implementations.

Classical light vs. nonclassical light: characterizations and interesting applications

Anirban Pathak, Ajoy Ghatak

We briefly review the ideas that have shaped modern optics and have led to various applications of light ranging from spectroscopy to astrophysics, and street lights to quantum communication. The review is primarily focused on the modern applications of classical light and nonclassical light. Specific attention has been given to the applications of squeezed, antibunched, and entangled states of radiation field. Applications of Fock states (especially single photon states) in the field of quantum communication are also discussed.

A perspective on high photon flux nonclassical light and applications in nonlinear optics

Theocharis Lamprou, Ioannis Liontos, Nikolaos C. Papadakis +1 more

Abstract Nonclassical light sources have a vital role in quantum optics as they offer a unique resource for studies in quantum technology. However, their applicability is restricted by their low intensity, while the development of new schemes producing intense nonclassical light is a challenging task. In this perspective article, we discuss potential schemes that could be used towards the development of high photon flux nonclassical light sources and their future prospects in nonlinear optics.

GENERATION OF NONCLASSICAL STATES OF LIGHT FIELD BY ORTHO-SYMMETRIZATION

彭石安

In recent years, nonclassical effects of light field havealways been a very conspicuous subject. In this field an effective approach is to construct as many as possible the nonclassical states of light field that are allowed in the frame of quantum mechanics and then to study their properties, so as to find out the relations of different nonclassical effects or states of light field and to discover new nonclassical effects or states of light field.

Resource theory of contextuality

Bárbara Amaral

In addition to the important role of contextuality in foundations of quantum theory, this intrinsically quantum property has been identified as a potential resource for quantum advantage in different tasks. It is thus of fundamental importance to study contextuality from the point of view of resource theories, which provide a powerful framework for the formal treatment of a property as an operational resource. In this contribution, we review recent developments towards a resource theory of contextuality and connections with operational applications of this property. This article is part of the theme issue 'Contextuality and probability in quantum mechanics and beyond'.

The quantum theory of light

Stephen Mark Barnett, John Jeffers

We present a brief introduction to the quantum theory of light as it is understood in the field of quantum optics. Our aim is not to review the topic, which would require a very extensive article (or even a book of several volumes) but rather to provide sufficient background to set the ideas in the following papers in their correct context. This article is part of the theme issue 'The quantum theory of light'.
