Study of coherent population trapping and AC Stark effect in ensembles of NV-centers in diamond at room temperature in microwave range

Ахмеджанов Ринат Абдулхаевич, Л. А. Гущин, I. V. Zelensky +4 more

We study coherent population trapping and AC Stark effect using microwave transitions between the sublevels of the ground state of the NV-center. Sublevels with different projections of the nuclear spin of the nitrogen atom are used to implement the -scheme. Dependence of the characteristics of the coherent population trapping dip on the control field frequency and intensity is studied. Various schemes for observing the AC Stark effect are considered. Keywords: NV-center, coherent population trapping, AC Stark.

Coherent population trapping in diamond N-V centers at zero magnetic field

Charles Santori, David A. Fattal, Sean M. Spillane +11 more

Coherent population trapping at zero magnetic field was observed for nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond under optical excitation. This was measured as a reduction in photoluminescence when the detuning between two excitation lasers matched the 2.88 GHz crystal-field splitting of the color center ground states. This behavior is highly sensitive to strain, which modifies the excited states, and was unexpected following recent experiments demonstrating optical readout of single nitrogen-vacancy electron spins based on cycling transitions. These results demonstrate for the first time that three-level Lambda configurations suitable for proposed quantum information applications can be realized simultaneously for all four orientations of nitrogen-vacancy centers at zero magnetic field.

Photoluminescence at the ground-state level anticrossing of the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond: A comprehensive study

Viktor Ivády, Huijie Zheng, Arne Wickenbrock +9 more

The nitrogen-vacancy center (NV center) in diamond at magnetic fields corresponding to the ground-state level anticrossing (GSLAC) region gives rise to rich photoluminescence (PL) signals due to the vanishing energy gap between the electron spin states, which enables for a broad variety of environmental couplings to have an effect on the NV center's luminescence. Previous works have addressed several aspects of the GSLAC photoluminescence, however, a comprehensive analysis of the GSLAC signature of NV ensembles in different spin environments at various external fields is missing. Here we employ a combination of experiments and recently developed numerical methods to investigate in detail the effects of transverse electric and magnetic fields, strain, P1 centers, NV centers, and the $^{13}\mathrm{C}$ nuclear spins on the GSLAC photoluminescence. Our comprehensive analysis provides a solid ground for advancing various microwave-free applications at the GSLAC, including but not limited to magnetometry, spectroscopy, dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) detection. We demonstrate that not only the most abundant $^{14}\mathrm{NV}$ center but the $^{15}\mathrm{NV}$ can also be utilized in such applications.

Nuclear-spin-dependent coherent population trapping of single nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond

D. Andrew Golter, Khodadad N. Dinyari, Hailin Wang

Coherent population trapping (CPT) provides a highly sensitive means for probing the energy-level structure of an atomic system. For a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond, the CPT offers an alternative to the standard optically detected magnetic resonance method for measuring the hyperfine structure of the electronic ground states. We show that the nuclear-spin-dependent CPT measures directly the hyperfine splitting of these states due to the ${}^{14}$N nuclear spin. The CPT spectral response obtained in the presence of a strong microwave field, resonant or nearly resonant with a ground-state spin transition, maps out the dynamic Stark splitting induced by the coherent spin excitation.
