Peculiarities of the interaction-induced modifications of the decay of different Zeeman sublevels of an atom excited in isotropic environment

Abstract

Abstract On the basis of a consistent quantum microscopic approach, we consider the decay of a multilevel atom excited in an ensemble of resonant two-level atoms. We show that the decay rate of different Zeeman sublevels of the excited state can be different, unlike in the case of a free atom. This effect is observed even when the environment is isotropic. Furthermore, we find that different irreducible components of the density matrix of initially excited multilevel atoms also differ in terms of decay rate.

Transients in media with near dipole-dipole interatomic interaction

Oleg Kh Khasanov, Русецкий Григорий Александрович, Самарцев Виталий Владимирович +2 more

The effect that may be exerted by an interatomic near dipole-dipole interaction upon optical transient processes in dense resonance media is analyzed. The behavior of the macroscopic polarization after a one-pulse excitation of a dense ensemble of two-level atoms is considered. It is shown that the free polarization signal is of oscillatory nature, with the oscillation frequency varying in time and being dependent on the dipole-dipole interaction constant, the intensity and duration of the exciting pulse, and the detuning of its carrier frequency from the resonance. The free polarization signal decay, which depends on the magnitude and sign of the sum of the detuning of the exciting pulse carrier frequency from the resonance and the Lorentz frequency, may obey either a power or an exponential law. The signal decay rate is determined not only by the inhomogeneous broadening, but also by the ratio of the above parameters. The peculiarities of echo-responses under one- or two-pulse excitation conditions are studied.

Free polarization decay in media with a short-range dipole-dipole interatomic interaction

The effect that may be exerted by an interatomic dipole-dipole interaction upon optical transient processes in dense resonance media, in particular, free polarization decay, is analyzed. The behavior of the macroscopic polarization after a single-pulse excitation of a dense ensemble of two-level atoms is considered. It is shown that the free polarization signal is of oscillatory nature, with the oscillation frequency varying in time and being dependent on the dipole-dipole interaction constant, the intensity and duration of the exciting pulse, and the detuning of its carrier frequency from the resonance. Electromagnetically induced absorption in quasi-degenerate two-level Doppler broadened atomic system

C. Y. Ye, Alexander S. Zibrov, Yuri V. Rostovtsev +1 more

We report, in this paper, a narrow dip of electromagnetically induced absorption inside the optical pumping window by the interaction of two coherent laser fields with a quasi-degenerate two-level open atomic system in inhomogeneously broadened Rb vapour. The effect arises from optical pumping and laser-induced atomic multilevel Zeeman sublevels in the same ground state. The numerical simulation for a N-type four-level system shows good agreement with experimental observation.

Derivation of coherent-population-trapping resonance signals from density-matrix equations with all relevant sublevels of Cs atoms and confirmation of experimental results

Kenta Matsumoto, Sota Kagami, Takahiro Fujisaku +4 more

Coherent-population-trapping resonance in vapor cell is a quantum interference effect that appears in the two-photon transitions between the ground-state hyperfine levels of alkali-metal atoms and is often utilized in miniature and centimeter-scale clock devices. To quantitatively understand and predict the performance of this phenomenon, it is necessary to consider the transitions and relaxations between all hyperfine Zeeman sublevels involved in the different excitation processes of the atom. In this paper, we constructed a computational multilevel atomic model of the Liouville density-matrix equation for 32 Zeeman sublevels involved in the ${D}_{1}$ line of $^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$ irradiated by two frequencies with circularly polarized components and then simulated the amplitude and shape of the resonance spectrum of the transmitted light through centimeter-scale Cs-vapor cells. We show that the numerical solutions of the equation and analytical investigations adequately explain a variety of the characteristics observed in the experiment.

Decay of a two-level atom

M. P. Sharma, David A. Cardimona, A. Gavrielides

We have reexamined the two-level atom with decay from the excited state out of the system and have noticed a rather surprising result. The intuitive exponential decay of the ground state at the damping rate of the excited state is actually reduced substantially when this damping rate is much greater than the Rabi frequency between the two states.

Population dynamics of magnetic sublevels for multilevel systems in high-power laser and external magnetic fields

T. Ya. Karagodova, Anna V. Kuptsova

The interaction of high power laser radiation with the atoms in the external magnetic field leads to the new nonlinear effects due to modifications of populations of the states of the system 'atom plus field.' From one side it can be followed by new peculiarities in the effect of the coherent population trapping and from other -- the effects of the population modifications are important for explanation of regularities of nonlinear magneto-optical effects. The modification of population dynamics due to the parameters of the system -- radiation field intensities, detunings, polarizations, magnetic field strength and orientation, relaxation constants leads to the new features in polarization effects, resonant fluorescence and resonant Raman effects. The new features of the considered theory are that it is built for multilevel atoms and has not restrictions on the probe intensity compared to the pump intensity. The theory and method permit to investigate the populations modifications depending on modifications of the parameters of the system and to find the relation between population dynamics and new nonlinear resonant magneto-optical effects. The considered system consists of atomic gas of low concentration in the constant magnetic field and two monochromatic laser fields of different intensities and polarizations. Analytically the influence of magnetic field on population dynamics of three-level systems have been considered. For real multilevel atom the computer simulations show the dependence of population dynamics on relaxation constants and the differences of this dynamics for different magnetic sublevels of the excited states of the atom. The results agree with known theoretical and experimental works.
