Abstract

The effect that may be exerted by an interatomic near dipole-dipole interaction upon optical transient processes in dense resonance media is analyzed. The behavior of the macroscopic polarization after a one-pulse excitation of a dense ensemble of two-level atoms is considered. It is shown that the free polarization signal is of oscillatory nature, with the oscillation frequency varying in time and being dependent on the dipole-dipole interaction constant, the intensity and duration of the exciting pulse, and the detuning of its carrier frequency from the resonance. The free polarization signal decay, which depends on the magnitude and sign of the sum of the detuning of the exciting pulse carrier frequency from the resonance and the Lorentz frequency, may obey either a power or an exponential law. The signal decay rate is determined not only by the inhomogeneous broadening, but also by the ratio of the above parameters. The peculiarities of echo-responses under one- or two-pulse excitation conditions are studied.

The effect that may be exerted by an interatomic dipole-dipole interaction upon optical transient processes in dense resonance media, in particular, free polarization decay, is analyzed. The behavior of the macroscopic polarization after a single-pulse excitation of a dense ensemble of two-level atoms is considered. It is shown that the free polarization signal is of oscillatory nature, with the oscillation frequency varying in time and being dependent on the dipole-dipole interaction constant, the intensity and duration of the exciting pulse, and the detuning of its carrier frequency from the resonance. Echo-spectroscopy of dense Yb vapors

Oleg Kh Khasanov, Русецкий Григорий Александрович, Н. Н. Рубцова +2 more

The near dipole-dipole interatomic interaction effect on transients in dense Yb vapors is considered. The influence of excitation-induced-dephasing as well as the frequency shift on signals of nonstationary nutation, free polarization decay and photon echo are taken into account. The conditions of intrinsic optical bistability occurrence in dense resonant media are discussed. The local field is shown to result in multiple single-pulse echo signals. Besides, in such media one can observe a lot of primary photon echo responses under various phase-matching conditions.

Coherent responses of resonance atom layer to short optical pulse excitation

S. O. Elyutin

Coherent responses of resonance atom layer to short optical pulse excitation are numerically considered. The inhomogeneous broadening of one-photon transition, the near dipole-dipole interaction, and the substrate dispersion are involved in analysis. Under certain intensity of incident pulses, a strong coherent interaction in the form of sharp spikes of superradiation is observed in transmitted radiation. The Lorentz field correction and the substrate dispersion weaken the effect, providing additional spectral shifts. Specific features of photon echo in the form of multiple echoes to a double or triple pulse excitation in the presence ofnear dipole-dipole interaction is discussed.

Effects of permanent dipole moments in transient four-wave mixing experiments

J. P. Lavoine

A two-pulse degenerate four-wave mixing experiment is analyzed in the case where the medium under investigation can be modeled by two-level systems having unequal permanent dipole moments. By modeling the light pulses by double exponentials [exp(-Gamma/t/)], we give an analytical expression of the third-order nonlinear polarization of the medium. We apply this result to simulate the measured signal in such experiment. We show that in the case of a two-photon transition, a signal can be detected if the pump pulse interacts with the medium before the probe pulse contrary to what is observed for excitations in the resonance region. An attempt to explain this behavior is made and the detected signal is analyzed in terms of pure coherent processes. This effect appears as a signature of the presence of permanent dipole moments. To test this property on a more realistic system, we then have considered a one-dimensional frequency-selected infrared degenerate four-wave mixing experiment on a molecular anharmonic vibrational mode modeled by a Morse potential and coupled to a dissipative bath of harmonic oscillators. We show that the two-photon transitions allowed by the presence of permanent dipole moments enable to analyze the multilevel system dynamics as if they were the one of a two-level system. Our results can also be extended to the case of inhomogeneous broadening and are of interest to study the infrared photon-echo response of anharmonic vibrational modes.
