Abstract

In this paper, we consider secure communication to analyze the physical layer security over a wireless dual-hop relay system in the presence of an eavesdropper with imperfect channel state information (CSI). In this scheme, the first hop from a source to a relay and the second hop from the relay to a destination is subject to Rayleigh fading. The relay will help to forward data signals from the source to the destination based on achievable secrecy rates. The secrecy performance is exactly evaluated by the secrecy outage probability of the achievable secrecy rates. Numerical examples are provided to corroborate the proposed studies.

Previous works on cooperative communication protocols under physical layer security have only considered perfect channel state information (CSI). In practice, fading channel coefficients are estimated imperfectly at receivers. In this paper, I propose and analyze a cooperative communication scheme under physical layer security with imperfect CSI. In this scheme, a source node transmits secure data to a destination node D with a help of a relay node against an eavesdropper node without direct links of source-destination and source-eavesdropper. The secrecy performance of the proposed scheme is presented by the secrecy outage probability in the closed-form expression. Simulation and analysis results demonstrate that the proposed secrecy scheme is more effective when the channel estimation error at the destination node is smaller than that at the eavesdropper node, and when the distance of the wiretapping link increases. In addition, the analysis values of the secrecy outage probability matches well with the simulation results.

Secrecy outage of cooperative relay network with and without eavesdropper's direct link

Khyati Chopra, Ranjan Bose, Anupam Joshi

In this paper, a source communicates to the destination with the cooperation of a relay, in the presence of an eavesdropper. All the links undergo Rayleigh fading and perfect decoding at the relays is not considered. The secrecy outage probability expression is evaluated for a decode-and-forward (DF) dual-hop cooperative relay network, both with and without the presence of direct source to eavesdropper transmission link. The performance of the maximal ratio combining (MRC) and selection combining (SC) diversity at the eavesdropper is investigated. Asymptotic and diversity gain analysis for both the single relay and multi-relay system is obtained, when average SNRs of source-relay and relay-destination links are balanced or unbalanced. We have shown that the increase in target secrecy rate and eavesdropper channel quality significantly affects the outage performance of the system. We have investigated the outage probability of optimal relay selection scheme, when either full instantaneous channel state information (ICSI) or statistical channel state information (SCSI) of all the links is available and have shown that there is improvement in the secrecy performance with the increase in the number of relays.

Outage performance of physical layer security for multi-hop underlay cognitive radio networks with imperfect channel state information

Kyusung Shim, Tri Nhu Do, Beongku An +1 more

In this paper, we consider a multi-hop decode-and-forward (DF) relaying transmission in underlay cognitive radio networks. Considering the presence of an eavesdropper that overhears the transmission, we address secure communications of multi-hop wireless communications in terms of physical layer security. In addition, we take in to account the effect of imperfect channel state information (CSI) which is of importance issue in underlay cognitive radio. We analyze the secrecy outage performance of the system over Rayleigh fading channels. In particular, we derive the closed-form expression of the system secrecy outage probability. The analysis results are validated by the Monte-Carlo simulation results. The numerical results show that the imperfect CSI issue does not effect on the security issue of the transmission in underlay cognitive radio networks. On the other hand, the number of hops plays a key role in the physical layer security.

On the Physical-Layer Security of a Dual-Hop UAV-Based Network in the Presence of Per-Hop Eavesdropping and Imperfect CSI

Elmehdi Illi, Marwa Qaraqe, Faissal El Bouanani +1 more

In this article, the physical-layer security of a dual-hop unmanned aerial vehicle-based wireless network, subject to imperfect channel state information (CSI) and mobility effects, is analyzed. Specifically, a source node$(S)$communicates with a destination node$(D)$through a decode-and-forward relay$(R)$, in the presence of two wiretappers$(E_{1}$and$E_{2}$) independently trying to compromise the two hops. Furthermore, the transmit nodes$(S,R) $have a single transmit antenna, while the receivers$(R,D,E_{1},E_{2}) $are equipped with multiple receive antennas. Based on the per-hop signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and correlated secrecy capacities’ statistics, a closed-form expression for the secrecy intercept probability (IP) metric is derived, in terms of key system parameters. Additionally, asymptotic expressions are revealed for two scenarios, namely: 1) mobile nodes with imperfect CSI and 2) static nodes with perfect CSI. The results show that a zero secrecy diversity order is manifested for the first scenario, due to the presence of a ceiling value of the average SNR, while the IP drops linearly at high average SNR in the second one, where the achievable diversity order depends on the fading parameters and number of antennas of the legitimate links/nodes. Furthermore, for static nodes, the system can be castigated by a 15-dB secrecy loss at IP$=3\times 10^{-3}$, when the CSI imperfection power raises from 0 to 10−3. Finally, the higher the legitimate nodes’ speed, carrier frequency, delay, and/or relay’s decoding threshold SNR, the worse is the system’s secrecy. Monte Carlo simulations endorse the derived analytical results.

Impact of outdated CSI on the secrecy performance of dual-hop networks using cooperative jamming

Walid Mallat, Wided Hadj Alouane, Hatem Boujemâa +1 more

This paper studies the problem of secure dual-hop AF network in the presence of eavesdropper. We study the secrecy performance of partial relay selection with outdated channel state information (CSI). We propose a system secrecy where two sources and destination simultaneously transmit the legitimate and the jamming signal respectively. The selected relay forwards the combined signal to the legitimate receiver and the eavesdropper. We derive a closed-form expression for lower bound on the ergodic secrecy capacity (ESC) under different assumptions of the eavesdropper channel gains. We verify that the system performance is degraded as the correlation coefficient decreases. Simulation results are considered to verify the exactness of the proposed mathematical analysis.

Physical layer security over Dual-Hop Asymmetric Fading Channels

Pham Ngoc SON, Hyung Yun Kong, Sang Quang Nguyen

In this paper, the line-of sight and non line-of sight characteristics of a received signal are exploited to analyze the secrecy performance of the decode-and-forward scheme over Dual-Hop Asymmetric Fading Channels. In this scheme, the first hop from a source to relays is subject to Rician fading, whereas the second hop from relays to a destination experience Nakagami-m fading. The best relay is chosen to help the source to transmit data signals to the destination based on achievable secrecy rate (ASR) following criterions as: best source-relay, best relay-destination and best end-to-end. The secrecy performance is exactly evaluated by the secrecy outage probability of the ASR. The Monte-Carlo results are presented to verify the theoretical analysis.
