Abstract

This paper is mainly focused on the description of an approach for establishing a spinorial representation of linear canonical transformations. It can be considered as a continuation of our previous works concerning linear canonical transformations and phase space representation of quantum theory. The said method is based on the development of an adequate parameterization of linear canonical transformations which permits to represent them with special pseudo-orthogonal transformations. Obtaining this pseudo-orthogonal representation makes it possible to establish the spinorial representation exploiting the well-known relation existing between special pseudo-orthogonal and spin groups. The cases of one dimension and general multidimensional theories are both studied. The design of the pseudo-orthogonal transformation associated to a linear canonical transformation is achieved by introducing adequate operators which are linear combinations of reduced momentum and coordinate operators. It is shown that a linear canonical transformation is equivalent to a special pseudo-orthogonal transformation defined in the set formed by these adequate operators. The spinorial representation is then deduced by defining a composite operator which is linear combinations of the tensorial products of the generators of the Clifford algebra with the adequate operators defining the special pseudo-orthogonal representation. It is established that unlike the case of a spinorial representation associated with an ordinary commutative vector space, the main invariant corresponding to the transformation is not the square of the composite operator but a higher degree polynomial function of it.

Study on a Spinorial Representation of Linear Canonical Transformations

Raoelina Andriambololona, Ravo Tokiniaina Ranaivoson, Hanitriarivo Rakotoson

This work is a continuation of our previous works concerning linear canonical transformations and phase space representation of quantum theory. It is mainly focused on the description of an approach which allows to establish spinorial representation of linear canonical transformations. This description is started with the presentation of a suitable parameterization of linear canonical transformations which permits to represent them with special pseudo-orthogonal transformations in an operator space. Then the establishment of the spinorial representation is deduced using the well-known relation existing between special pseudo-orthogonal and spin groups. The cases of one dimension and general multidimensional theory are both studied.

On rotations as special cases of unitary transformations with some applications to the theory of spin

Per‐Olov Löwdin

Abstract Some problems in elementary geometry are approached from the point of view of linear algebra and generalized to the theory of linear spaces of finite or infinite dimensions having a positive definite binary product. The angle ω between two elements of the linear space is defined from the concept of length by means of the cosine‐theorem. A rotation is then defined as a special case of a unitary transformation moving all elements the same angle ω, except that under certain circumstances, some elements may stay invariant. In the former case, one speaks of a rotation around an “external axis,” and in the latter case, of a rotation around an “internal axis” defined by the invariant elements. It is shown that the finite rotations U of both types may be expressed in the simple exponential form U = exp(iωm), where the “generator” m in the former case is an operator satisfying the relation m2 = 1, and in the latter case, m3 = m. The structure of the group of finite rotations in the former case is clarified in some detail. As an illustration of the theory, some applications to the three‐ and two‐dimensional spaces as well as to the theory of spin are given. The coupling between the ordinary three‐dimensional rotations and the spinor transformations is considered in somewhat greater detail.

Invariant quadratic operators associated with linear canonical transformations and their eigenstates

Abstract The main purpose of this work is to identify invariant quadratic operators associated with Linear Canonical Transformations (LCTs) which could play important roles in physics. In quantum physics, LCTs are the linear transformations which keep invariant the Canonical Commutation Relations (CCRs). In this work, LCTs corresponding to a general pseudo-Euclidian space are considered and related to a phase space representation of quantum theory. Explicit calculations are firstly performed for the monodimensional case to identify the corresponding LCT-invariant quadratic operators then multidimensional generalizations of the obtained results are deduced. The eigenstates of these operators are also identified. A first kind of LCT-invariant operator is a second order polynomial of the coordinates and momenta operators. The coefficients of this polynomial depend on the mean values and the statistical variances-covariances of the coordinates and momenta operators themselves. It is shown that these statistical variances-covariances can be related with thermodynamic variables. In this context, new quantum corrections to the ideal gas state equation are deduced from correction to the Hamiltonian operator of non-relativistic free quantum particles that is suggested by LCT-covariance. Two other LCT-invariant quadratic operators, which can be considered as the number operators of some quasiparticles, are also identified: the first one is a number operator of bosonic type quasiparticles and the second one corresponds to fermionic type. This fermionic LCT-invariant quadratic operator is directly related to a spin representation of LCTs. It is shown explicitly, in the case of a relativistic pentadimensional theory, that the eigenstates of this operator can be considered as basic quantum states of elementary fermions. A classification of the fundamental fermions, compatible with the Standard Model of particle physics, is established from a classification of these states.

Invariant quadratic operator associated with Linear Canonical Transformations

Ravo Tokiniaina Ranaivoson, Raoelina Andriambololona, Hanitriarivo Rakotoson

Abstract The main purpose of this work is to identify the general quadratic operator which is invariant under the action of Linear Canonical Transformations (LCTs). LCTs are known in signal processing and optics as the transformations which generalize certain useful integral transforms. In quantum theory, they can be identified as the linear transformations which keep invariant the canonical commutation relations characterizing the coordinates and momenta operators. In this paper, LCTs corresponding to a general pseudo-Euclidian space are considered. Explicit calculations are performed for the monodimensional case to identify the corresponding LCT invariant operator then multidimensional generalizations of the obtained results are deduced. It was noticed that the introduction of a variance-covariance matrix, of coordinate and momenta operators, and a pseudo-orthogonal representation of LCTs facilitate the identification of the invariant quadratic operator. According to the calculations carried out, the LCT invariant operator is a second order polynomial of the coordinates and momenta operators. The coefficients of this polynomial depend on the mean values and the statistical variances-covariances of these coordinates and momenta operators themselves. The eigenstates of the LCT invariant operator are also identified with it and some of the main possible applications of the obtained results are discussed.

The Group Theoretical Structure of Fermion Many-Body Systems Arising from the Canonical Anticommutation Relation. I: Lie Algebras of Fermion Operators and Exact Generator Coordinate Representations of State Vectors

Hideo Fukutome

We study in this series the group theoretical structure of Fermion many-body systems arising from the canonical anticommutation relation of the annihilation-creation operators. Owing to the canonical anticommutation relation, a Fermion system with N single particle states has at least six Lie algebras of Fermion operators, a U(N), an SO(2N), an SO(2N+1), an SO(2N+2) and two U(N+1) Lie algebras. There are also two Clifford algebras of 2N and 2N+1 dimensions. The Fermion space is shown to belong to the spinor representations of the SO(2N), SO(2N+1) and SO(2N+2) groups. The canonical transformations generated by the U(N), SO(2N) and SO(2N+1) Lie algebras are characterized as the transformations to induce the linear U(N), SO(2N) and SO(2N+1) transformations for the Clifford algebras. The independent (quasi-) particle type wave functions of three kinds including the Hartree-Fock and Hartree-Bogoliubov wave functions are constructed by means of the canonical transformations and their relationship is studied. We derive three exact generator coordinate representations for state vectors in which the generator coordinates are the U(N), SO(2N) or SO(2N+1) group and the generating functions are the independent (quasi-) particle type wave functions. We characterize the structures of state vectors in the generator coordinate representations and study the relationship of the three representations.

Quantum classification and search algorithms using spinorial representations

Lauro Mascarenhas, Vinicius N. A. Lula-Rocha, Marco A. S. Trindade

We propose an algebraic formulation for two distinct quantum algorithms: a quantum classification algorithm and a quantum search algorithm with a non-uniform initial distribution, both based on Clifford algebras and spinorial representations. In the classification algorithm, we exploit properties of spinorial representations to construct orthogonal quantum states associated with different classes, allowing the identification of an item's class through the evaluation of expectation values of operators derived from the generators of the Clifford algebra. In the quantum search algorithm, we consider a database with prior information in which the oracle is implemented directly using generators of the Clifford algebra, simplifying its realization. The proposed approach provides a unified algebraic description for both algorithms, employing spinorial representations in the construction of quantum states and operators. Computational implementations are presented.
