Abstract

Abstract The main purpose of this work is to identify the general quadratic operator which is invariant under the action of Linear Canonical Transformations (LCTs). LCTs are known in signal processing and optics as the transformations which generalize certain useful integral transforms. In quantum theory, they can be identified as the linear transformations which keep invariant the canonical commutation relations characterizing the coordinates and momenta operators. In this paper, LCTs corresponding to a general pseudo-Euclidian space are considered. Explicit calculations are performed for the monodimensional case to identify the corresponding LCT invariant operator then multidimensional generalizations of the obtained results are deduced. It was noticed that the introduction of a variance-covariance matrix, of coordinate and momenta operators, and a pseudo-orthogonal representation of LCTs facilitate the identification of the invariant quadratic operator. According to the calculations carried out, the LCT invariant operator is a second order polynomial of the coordinates and momenta operators. The coefficients of this polynomial depend on the mean values and the statistical variances-covariances of these coordinates and momenta operators themselves. The eigenstates of the LCT invariant operator are also identified with it and some of the main possible applications of the obtained results are discussed.

Invariant quadratic operators associated with linear canonical transformations and their eigenstates

Abstract The main purpose of this work is to identify invariant quadratic operators associated with Linear Canonical Transformations (LCTs) which could play important roles in physics. In quantum physics, LCTs are the linear transformations which keep invariant the Canonical Commutation Relations (CCRs). In this work, LCTs corresponding to a general pseudo-Euclidian space are considered and related to a phase space representation of quantum theory. Explicit calculations are firstly performed for the monodimensional case to identify the corresponding LCT-invariant quadratic operators then multidimensional generalizations of the obtained results are deduced. The eigenstates of these operators are also identified. A first kind of LCT-invariant operator is a second order polynomial of the coordinates and momenta operators. The coefficients of this polynomial depend on the mean values and the statistical variances-covariances of the coordinates and momenta operators themselves. It is shown that these statistical variances-covariances can be related with thermodynamic variables. In this context, new quantum corrections to the ideal gas state equation are deduced from correction to the Hamiltonian operator of non-relativistic free quantum particles that is suggested by LCT-covariance. Two other LCT-invariant quadratic operators, which can be considered as the number operators of some quasiparticles, are also identified: the first one is a number operator of bosonic type quasiparticles and the second one corresponds to fermionic type. This fermionic LCT-invariant quadratic operator is directly related to a spin representation of LCTs. It is shown explicitly, in the case of a relativistic pentadimensional theory, that the eigenstates of this operator can be considered as basic quantum states of elementary fermions. A classification of the fundamental fermions, compatible with the Standard Model of particle physics, is established from a classification of these states.

Casimir operators for the relativistic quantum phase space symmetry group

Philippe Manjakasoa Randriantsoa, Ravo Tokiniaina Ranaivoson, Raoelina Andriambololona +3 more

Recent developments in the unification of quantum mechanics and relativity have emphasized the necessity of generalizing classical phase space into a relativistic quantum phase space which is a framework that inherently incorporates the uncertainty principle and relativistic covariance. In this context, the present work considers the derivation of linear and quadratic Casimir operators corresponding to representations of the Linear Canonical Transformations (LCT) group associated with a five-dimensional spacetime of signature (1,4). This LCT group, which emerges naturally as the symmetry group of the relativistic quantum phase space, is isomorphic to the symplectic group Sp(2,8). The latter notably contains the de Sitter group SO(1,4) as a subgroup. This geometric setting provides a unified framework for extending the Standard Model of particle physics while incorporating cosmological features. Previous studies have shown that the LCT group admits both fermionic-like and bosonic-like representations. Within this framework, a novel classification of quarks and leptons, including sterile neutrinos, has also been proposed. In this work, we present a systematic derivation of the linear and quadratic Casimir operators associated with these representations, motivated by their fundamental role in the characterization of symmetry groups in physics. The construction is based on the relations between the LCT group and the pseudo-unitary group U(1,4). Three linears and three quadratics Casimir operators are identified: two corresponding to the fermionic-like representation, two to the bosonic-like representation, and two hybrid operators linking the two representations. The complete eigenvalue spectra and corresponding eigenstates for each operator are subsequently computed and identified

Universal invariants of quantum-mechanical and optical systems

V. V. Dodonov, Olga V. Man’ko

We give a brief review of the theory of quantum and optical universal invariants, i.e., certain combinations of the second- and higher-order moments (variances) of quantum-mechanical operators or the transverse phase-space coordinates of optical paraxial beams that are preserved in time (or along the axis of the beam) independently of the concrete form of the coefficients of the Hamiltonian or the parameters of the optical system, provided that the effective Hamiltonian is either a generic quadratic form of the generalized coordinate-momenta operators or a linear combination of generators of certain finite-dimensional algebras. Using the phase-space representation of quantum mechanics (paraxial optics) in terms of the Wigner function, we elucidate the relation between the quantum invariants and the classical universal integral invariants of Poincaré and Cartan. The specific features of the Gaussian beams are discussed as examples.

Study on a Spinorial Representation of Linear Canonical Transformations

Raoelina Andriambololona, Ravo Tokiniaina Ranaivoson, Hanitriarivo Rakotoson

This work is a continuation of our previous works concerning linear canonical transformations and phase space representation of quantum theory. It is mainly focused on the description of an approach which allows to establish spinorial representation of linear canonical transformations. This description is started with the presentation of a suitable parameterization of linear canonical transformations which permits to represent them with special pseudo-orthogonal transformations in an operator space. Then the establishment of the spinorial representation is deduced using the well-known relation existing between special pseudo-orthogonal and spin groups. The cases of one dimension and general multidimensional theory are both studied.

Study on a Spinorial Representation of Linear Canonical Transformation

Raoelina Andriambololona, Ravo Tokiniaina Ranaivoson, Hanitriarivo Rakotoson

This paper is mainly focused on the description of an approach for establishing a spinorial representation of linear canonical transformations. It can be considered as a continuation of our previous works concerning linear canonical transformations and phase space representation of quantum theory. The said method is based on the development of an adequate parameterization of linear canonical transformations which permits to represent them with special pseudo-orthogonal transformations. Obtaining this pseudo-orthogonal representation makes it possible to establish the spinorial representation exploiting the well-known relation existing between special pseudo-orthogonal and spin groups. The cases of one dimension and general multidimensional theories are both studied. The design of the pseudo-orthogonal transformation associated to a linear canonical transformation is achieved by introducing adequate operators which are linear combinations of reduced momentum and coordinate operators. It is shown that a linear canonical transformation is equivalent to a special pseudo-orthogonal transformation defined in the set formed by these adequate operators. The spinorial representation is then deduced by defining a composite operator which is linear combinations of the tensorial products of the generators of the Clifford algebra with the adequate operators defining the special pseudo-orthogonal representation. It is established that unlike the case of a spinorial representation associated with an ordinary commutative vector space, the main invariant corresponding to the transformation is not the square of the composite operator but a higher degree polynomial function of it.

Classical and quantum action-phase variables for time-dependent oscillators

Sang Pyo Kim, Don Nelson Page

For a time-dependent classical quadratic oscillator we introduce pairs of real and complex invariants that are linear in position and momentum. Each pair of invariants realize explicitly a canonical transformation from the phase space to the invariant space, in which the action-phase variables are defined. We find the action operator for the time-dependent quantum oscillator via the classical-quantum correspondence. Candidate phase operators conjugate to the action operator are discussed, but no satisfactory ones are found.
