Achieving colossal Kerr nonlinearity via multiphoton atomic coherence in a five-level Λ − Ξ system

Amanjot Kaur, Sandeep Kumar, Paramjit Kaur

Abstract We propose to utilize a five-level Λ − Ξ system to achieve large self-Kerr nonlinearity under multiphoton resonance conditions. Using a density matrix formulation along with an iterative perturbation technique, analytic expressions of linear and nonlinear susceptibilities are derived for stationary as well as for moving atoms. Variation of first- and third-order susceptibilities with respect to frequency and intensity of switching field is then discussed. The dressed-state picture is employed to explain the amplitude and position of each peak in linear and nonlinear absorption profiles. It is found that under slow light conditions, large controllable Kerr nonlinearity with reduced linear and nonlinear absorption is achieved by properly adjusting the strength and detunings of strong electromagnetic (e.m.) fields. Our numerical results also reveal that the Kerr nonlinear index of our considered system is greater than that of existing three-level Λ and four-level N systems. Finally, it is substantiated that self-Kerr nonlinearity is proliferated by taking the Doppler effect into account.

Control of spectroscopic features of multiphoton transitions in two coupled qubits by driving fields

V. O. Munyaev, M. V. Bastrakova

The quantum level population behavior of two coupled flux qubits depending on the external driving field characteristics is studied. Explicit expressions for the multiphoton transition probabilities at an arbitrary control field amplitude are obtained for the case of small tunnel splitting energies. We describe the controllable features of their formation and thereby the creation or destruction of entanglement on the direct interlevel transition and during the transition through intermediate states by system bias tuning. We found a feature of the qubit population inversion that results in the independence of the resonance positions from the qubit coupling strength. Using the Floquet-Markov equation, we numerically demonstrate that the positions of multiphoton resonances are stable to dissipative processes.

Bloch-Siegert shifts and widths for multiphoton resonances: In-plane field configuration

Valentin N. Ostrovsky, Erik Horsdal-Pedersen

Bloch-Siegert shifts and widths of resonances in two-level systems are evaluated within an adiabatic approximation applicable in the multiphoton regime. The level splitting is controlled by a static field. Most attention is paid to the case of a circular driving field with the static field in the plane of rotation. This nonconventional setup was used in a recent experiment on intrashell resonances in Rydberg atoms where shifts and widths for $N$-photon resonance with $N$ as large as 23 were observed [D. Fregenal et al., Phys. Rev. A 69, 031401(R) (2004)]. For this in-plane configuration the resonance widths are drastically enhanced compared to their values in the conventional configuration (linearly polarized driving field perpendicular to static field), whereas the shifts are only weakly affected.
