Bloch-Siegert shifts and widths for multiphoton resonances: In-plane field configuration

Abstract

Bloch-Siegert shifts and widths of resonances in two-level systems are evaluated within an adiabatic approximation applicable in the multiphoton regime. The level splitting is controlled by a static field. Most attention is paid to the case of a circular driving field with the static field in the plane of rotation. This nonconventional setup was used in a recent experiment on intrashell resonances in Rydberg atoms where shifts and widths for $N$-photon resonance with $N$ as large as 23 were observed [D. Fregenal et al., Phys. Rev. A 69, 031401(R) (2004)]. For this in-plane configuration the resonance widths are drastically enhanced compared to their values in the conventional configuration (linearly polarized driving field perpendicular to static field), whereas the shifts are only weakly affected.

Multiphoton intrashell resonances in Rydberg atoms: Bloch-Siegert shifts and widths

Daniel E. Fregenal, Erik Horsdal-Pedersen, Lars Bojer Madsen +3 more

We measure for the first time, to our knowledge, $N$-photon intrashell resonances, widths, and Bloch-Siegert shifts up to $N=23$. Rydberg atoms of Li $(n=25)$ in a rotating electric field and a static, in-plane electric or magnetic field are used. The measurements, in conjunction with theoretical estimates, precisely determine the characteristics of the resonances (shifts and widths) and their dependence on the strength of the rotating field.

Bloch-Siegert shift for multiphoton resonances

Peter L. Hagelstein, Irfan U. Chaudhary

Recently there has been theoretical and experimental interest in Bloch-Siegert shifts in an intense photon field. A perturbative treatment becomes difficult in this multiphoton regime. We present a unitary transform and rotated model, which allows us to get accurate results away from the level anticrossings. A simple variational energy estimate leads to a new expression for the dressed two-level system energy which is accurate, and useful over a wide range of the dimensionless coupling constant.

Landau-Zener-Stueckelberg theory for multiphoton intrashell transitions in Rydberg atoms: Bloch-Siegert shifts and widths

Morten Førre

We derive closed analytic expressions for intrashell transitions in Rydberg atoms exposed to linearly polarized or circularly polarized periodic electromagnetic fields. The resonance energies and transition probabilities are calculated using multichannel Landau-Zener-Stueckelberg theory. The theory provides formulas for the resonance widths and positions for arbitrary field strength and frequency. The formulas are in excellent agreement with numerical solution of the evolution equations.

Multiphoton resonances and Bloch-Siegert shifts observed in a classical two-level system

Marco W. Beijersbergen, R. J. C. Spreeuw, L. Allen +1 more

We report experimental observation of multiphoton resonances and Bloch-Siegert shifts in a strongly driven classical two-level system. The system is an optical ring resonator, and the levels are two orthogonal linear polarizations. The Rabi frequency and the Bloch-Siegert shift were measured for both the one- and three-photon cases. Satisfactory agreement was achieved with theory developed for a quantum two-level system. The experiment demonstrates that these coherence phenomena can be observed in a purely classical system.

Bloch-Siegert effects in two-photon excitations: Fixed laser-molecule configurations versus orientational averaging

William J. Meath

The two-level rotating wave approximation for two-photon excitations in dipolar molecules is modified to include the effects of the Bloch-Siegert shift in the two-photon resonance energy. The resulting analytical results are used to establish a criterion for when Bloch-Siegert effects are important and the relevance of these effects are compared for fixed laser-molecule configurations versus orientationally averaged results. Two-level model molecules, with parallel permanent and transition dipoles, are used in this work and the effects of Bloch-Siegert shifts are discussed for resonance profiles, time-dependent populations of the excited state, and time-averaged excitation rates. Bloch-Siegert shifts can have pronounced effects on resonance energies and the shape of resonance profiles and, for example, on the magnitudes and the temporal locations of the maxima in the temporal evolution of the time-dependent properties of the system.

Multiphoton Bloch–Siegert shifts and level splittings in a three-level system

Peter L. Hagelstein, Irfan U. Chaudhary

In previous work we studied the spin-boson model in the multiphoton regime, using a rotation that provides a separation between terms that contribute most of the level energies away from resonance, and terms responsible for the level splittings at the anticrossing. Here, we consider a generalization of the spin-boson model consisting of a three-level system coupled to an oscillator. We construct a similar rotation and apply it to the more complicated model. We find that the rotation provides a useful approximation to the energy levels in the multiphoton region of the new problem. We find that good results can be obtained for the level splittings at the anticrossings for resonances involving the lower two levels in regions away from accidental or low-order resonances of the upper two levels.
