Photon Statistics of Lasers Under External Perturbations: Impact of Nonlinear Dynamics

Abstract

The impact of laser gain and external perturbations on the emitted photon statistics is investigated using a semi-classical Langevin approach. We evaluate photon auto-correlation functions from stochastic simulations and show that anti-bunching signatures can occur for classical light-fields due to nonlinear dynamics.

Limits on manipulating conditional photon statistics via interference of weak lasers

Kang-Hee Hong, Jisung Jung, Young‐Wook Cho +5 more

Photon anti-bunching, measured via the Hanbury-Brown-Twiss experiment, is one of the key signatures of quantum light and is tied to sub-Poissonian photon number statistics. Recently, it has been reported that photon anti-bunching or conditional sub-Poissonian photon number statistics can be obtained via second-order interference of mutually incoherent weak lasers and heralding based on photon counting [Phys. Rev. A92, 033855 (2015)10.1103/PhysRevA.92.033855; Opt. Express24, 19574 (2016)10.1364/OE.24.019574; https://arxiv.org/abs/1601.08161]. Here, we report theoretical analysis on the limits of manipulating conditional photon statistics via interference of weak lasers. It is shown that conditional photon number statistics can become super-Poissonian in such a scheme. We, however, demonstrate explicitly that it cannot become sub-Poissonian, i.e., photon anti-bunching cannot be obtained in such a scheme. We point out that incorrect results can be obtained if one does not properly account for seemingly negligible higher-order photon number expansions of the coherent state.

The Use of Optical Dead-Time Effects for the Generation of Anti-Bunched and Sub-Poissonian Photo-Electron Statistics

Eric Jakeman

A great deal of effort has been devoted during the last decade to the theory of nonclassical states of the radiation field. From a practical point of view some of the most interesting predictions of these theories concern the generation of light with sub-Poissonian photon counting statistics for which Such light is evidently less noisy than laser radiation with obvious implications for the improved performance of optical systems. When the temporal autocorrelation function of the photon counts increases as the delay time increases from zero the light is also said to be antibunched.

Perturbation approach in Heisenberg equations for lasers

Игорь Евгеньевич Проценко, Alexander V. Uskov

Nonlinear Heisenberg-Langevin equations are solved analytically by operator Fourier expansion for the laser in the light-emitting diode (LED) regime. Fluctuations of populations of lasing levels are taken into account as perturbations. The spectra of operator products are calculated as convolutions, preserving Bose commutations for the lasing field operators. It is found that fluctuations of population significantly affect spontaneous and stimulated emissions into the lasing mode, increase the radiation rate, the number of lasing photons, and broaden the spectrum of a bad cavity threshold-less and the superradiant lasers. The method can be applied to various resonant systems in quantum optics.

Photon anti-bunching in high harmonic generation

Philipp Stammer, Javier Rivera-Dean, Maciej Lewenstein

Photon anti-bunching is the direct evidence for the existence of photons without having a classical counterpart. Unlike bunching of photons, which can have a semi-classical description, the effect of photon anti-bunching can only be understood with quantized electromagnetic fields. However, for the process of high harmonic generation (HHG), where many photons of the driving field are upconverted to a single photon of higher energy, there is yet no clear evidence for the presence of individual photon emission. The key result of this work is the prediction of photon anti-bunching in the process of HHG, marking it the first theoretical discovery of non-classicality in the temporal correlations of HHG photons. While other non-classical signatures in HHG, such as sub-Poissonian statistics or squeezing, have been discussed for an ensemble of photons, the anti-bunching signature reported here is a signature of a single photon. This is achieved by using the recently developed Heisenberg picture approach for quantum optical HHG, revealing clear anti-bunching signatures in the intensity correlation function across the entire harmonic spectrum.

Photon statistics of a nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator

Reeta Vyas, Surendra Kumar Singh

Photon statistics of light produced by a nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator operating below threshold are calculated. Positive-P representation is used to map quantum dynamics onto a set of classical Langevin equations for the complex field amplitudes associated with the annihilation and creation operators for the field produced by the oscillator. Using a Karhunen Loeve expansion of the resulting stochastic processes the moment generating function for photon counting statistics is obtained.

Gain and Loss Fluctuations in Nonlinear Optical Systems

Axel Schenzle

The interaction of light and matter can be described by a set of coupled nonlinear evolution equations for the material and electromagnetic fields. In order to account for the effects of vacuum fluctuations, noise forces which cause spontaneous transitions have to be included. In these macroscopic systems various sources of noise besides fundamental quantum fluctuations exist which are of macroscopic origin. These cause fluctuations of the cavity dissipation as well as of the external pumping power. In the course of an adiabatic elimination procedure, these fluctuations appear as multiplicative noise in the equations of motion (e.g. for the field intensity, due to the nonlinearity of the interaction). While fluctuations of the cavity damping create noise linear in the field intensity, randomness in the pump strength causes fluctuations that depend nonlinearly on the light intensity. In this respect, the noise terms enter the equations of motion quite differently and have to be distinguished from spontaneous emission noise which is independent of the field strength, and is the basis of all traditional laser models.
