Abstract

The orbit space of the group G := SU(2) × U(1) ⊂ U(3) acting adjointly on the state space of a three-level quantum system is discussed. The semialgebraic structure of is determined within the Procesi–Schwarz method. Using an integrity basis for the ring of G-invariant polynomials , the set of constraints on the Casimir invariants of the group U(3) coming from the positivity requirement Grad(z) ≥ 0 for the Procesi–Schwarz gradient matrix is analyzed in detail.

Constructing SU(2) x U(1) orbit space for qutrit mixed states

Vladimir P. Gerdt, A. Khvedelidze, Yuri Palii

The orbit space $\mathfrak{P}(\mathbb{R}^8)/\mathrm{G}$, of the group $\mathrm{G}:=\mathrm{SU(2)\times U(1)}\subset\mathrm{U(3)}$ acting adjointly on the state space $\mathfrak{P}(\mathbb{R}^8)$ of a 3-level quantum system is discussed. The semi-algebraic structure of $\mathfrak{P}(\mathbb{R}^8) /\mathrm{G}$, is determined within the Procesi-Schwarz method. Using the integrity basis for the ring of G-invariant polynomials, $\mathbb{R}[\mathfrak{P}(\mathbb{R}^8)]^{\mathrm{G}}$, the set of constraints on the Casimir invariants of $\mathrm{U}(3)$ group coming from the positivity requirement of Procesi-Schwarz gradient matrix, $\mathrm{Grad}(z)\geqslant 0$, is analyzed in details.

Describing orbit space of global unitary actions for mixed qudit states

Vladimir P. Gerdt, A. Khvedelidze, Yuri Palii

The unitary $ \mathrm{U}(d)$-equivalence relation between elements of the space $\mathfrak{P}_+\,$ of mixed states of $d$-dimensional quantum system defines the orbit space $ \mathfrak{P}_+/ \mathrm{U}(d)\,$ and provides its description in terms the ring $\mathbb{R}[\mathfrak{P}_+]^{\mathrm{U}(d)}\,$ of $\mathrm{U}(d)$-invariant polynomials. We prove that the semi-algebraic structure of $ \mathfrak{P}_+/ \mathrm{U}(d)\, $ is determined completely by two basic properties of density matrices, their semi-positivity and Hermicity. Particularly, it is shown that the Processi-Schwarz inequalities in elements of integrity basis for $\mathbb{R}[\mathfrak{P}_+]^{\mathrm{U}(d)}\,$ defining the orbit space, are identically satisfied for all elements of $\mathfrak{P}_+$.

Local invariants for mixed qubit-qutrit states

Vladimir P. Gerdt, A. Khvedelidze, Dimitar M. Mladenov +1 more

In the present paper few steps are undertaken towards the description of the qubit-qutrit pair - quantum bipartite system composed of two and three level subsystems. The computational difficulties with the construction of the local unitary polynomial invariants are discussed. Calculations of the Molien functions and Poincare series for the qubit-qubit and qubit-qutrit local unitary invariants are outlined and compared with the known results. The requirement of positive semi-definiteness of the density operator is formulated explicitly as a set of inequalities in five Casimir invariants of the algebra su(6).

Poincare series for local unitary invariants of mixed states of the qubit-qutrit system

Dragomir Ž. Djoković

We consider the mixed states of the bipartite quantum system with the first party a qubit and the second a qutrit. The group of local unitary transformations of the system, ignoring the overall phase factor, is the direct product G of SU(2) and SU(3). We compute the simply graded Poincare series of the algebra of G-invariant polynomial functions on the set of mixed states of the system, and construct several low degree invariants.

Constraints on SU(2) ⊗ SU(2) invariant polynomials for a pair of entangled qubits

Vladimir P. Gerdt, A. Khvedelidze, Yu. G. Palii

We discuss the entanglement properties of two qubits in terms of polynomial invariants of the adjoint action of SU(2) ⊕ SU(2) group on the space of density matrices $\mathfrak{P}_ +$ . Since elements of $\mathfrak{P}_ +$ are Hermitian, non-negative fourth-order matrices with unit trace, the space of density matrices represents a semi-algebraic subset, $\mathfrak{P}_ + \in \mathbb{R}^{15}$ . We define $\mathfrak{P}_ +$ explicitly with the aid of polynomial inequalities in the Casimir operators of the enveloping algebra of SU(4) group. Using this result the optimal integrity basis for polynomial SU(2) ⊕ SU(2) invariants is proposed and the well-known Peres-Horodecki separability criterion for 2-qubit density matrices is given in the form of polynomial inequalities in three SU(4) Casimir invariants and two SU(2) ⊕ SU(2) scalars; namely, determinants of the so-called correlation and the Schlienz-Mahler entanglement matrices.

The mixed two qutrit system: local unitary invariants, entanglement monotones, and the SLOCC group $SL(3,{\mathbb {C}})$

Peter Jarvis

We consider local unitary invariants and entanglement monotones for the mixed two qutrit system. Character methods for the local SU(3)xSU(3) transformation group are used to establish the count of algebraically independent polynomial invariants up to degree 5 in the components of the density operator. These are identified up to quartic degree in the standard basis of Gell-Mann matrices, with the help of the calculus of f and d coefficients. Next, investigating local measurement operations, we study a SLOCC qutrit group, which plays the role of a `relativistic' transformation group analogous to that of the Lorentz group SL(2,C)_R ~ SO(3,1) for the qubit case. This is the group SL(3,C)_R, presented as a group of real 9x9 matrices acting linearly on the 9-dimensional space of projective coordinates for the qutrit density matrix. The counterpart, for qutrits, of the invariant 4x4 Minkowski metric of the qubit case, proves to be a certain 9x9x9 totally symmetric three-fold tensor generalizing the Gell-Mann d coefficient. Using this structure, we provide a count of the corresponding LSL polynomial invariants using group character methods. Finally, we give an explicit construction of the lowest degree quantity (the cubic invariant) and its expansion in terms of SU(3)xSU(3) invariants, and we indicate how to construct higher degree analogues. These quantities are proven to yield entanglement monotones. This work generalizes and partly extends the paper of King, Welsh and Jarvis (Journal of Physics A, 40(33):10083, 2007) on the mixed two qubit system, which is reviewed in an appendix.
