Abstract

Abstract In this article, we discuss a method to control the long-range interactions between bosons in a three-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture with the help of optical lattices on fermions. We find the range and the peaked momentum of the fermion-mediated interactions can be tuned by the optical lattice depth and the fermion density. If the fermion density is close to half-filling, roton excitations can be generated with weak Bose-Fermi interactions. Further, if the fermions are not exact at half-filling, multi-roton structure may emerge, implying competing density orders. Therefore, tuning the lattice depth and the fermion density in a Bose-Fermi mixture serves as an effective way to control the interaction range and resonant momentum between bosons .

Supersolid Bose-Fermi Mixtures in Optical Lattices

Irakli Titvinidze, Michiel Snoek, Walter Hofstetter

We study a mixture of strongly interacting bosons and spinless fermions with on-site repulsion in a three-dimensional optical lattice. For this purpose we develop and apply a generalized dynamical mean-field theory, which is exact in infinite dimensions and reliably describes the full range from weak to strong coupling. We restrict ourselves to half filling. For weak Bose-Fermi repulsion a supersolid forms, in which bosonic superfluidity coexists with charge-density wave order. For stronger interspecies repulsion the bosons become localized while the charge-density wave order persists. The system is unstable against phase separation for weak repulsion among the bosons.

Quasi-Long-Range-Order in Mott State of Bose–Fermi Mixtures on One-Dimensional Optical Lattice

Akiko Masaki, Sota Tsukada, 弘之 森

We numerically studied internal structure of Mott insulating state of Bose–Fermi mixture systems on a one-dimensional optical lattice by using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We looked for Mott state carefully adjusting various parameters to prevent phase separation. From the calculation of density–density correlation functions we found a quasi long-range order in the particle distribution in the Mott state. The order was strongly dependent of the ratio of the number of the bosons to that of the fermions. For example, the bosons and the fermions showed a tendency of aligning alternately when equal number of the bosons and fermions are introduced in the system. The observation of the quasi long-range order in the one-dimensional system indicates the presence of true long-range order in Bose–Fermi mixtures on a three-dimensional optical lattice.

Role of Interactions in Rb87−K40 Bose-Fermi Mixtures in a 3D Optical Lattice

Th. Best, Sebastian Will, Ulrich Schneider +4 more

We investigate the effect of interspecies interaction on a degenerate mixture of bosonic 87Rb and fermionic 40K atoms in a three-dimensional optical lattice potential. Using a Feshbach resonance, the 87Rb-40K interaction is tuned over a wide range. Through an analysis of the 87Rb momentum distribution, we find a pronounced asymmetry between strong repulsion and strong attraction. In the latter case, we observe a marked shift in the superfluid to Mott insulator transition, which we attribute to a renormalization of the Bose-Hubbard parameters due to self-trapping.

Interaction- and filling-induced quantum anomalous Hall effect in ultracold neutral Bose-Fermi mixtures on a hexagonal lattice

Shang-Shun Zhang, Heng Fan, Wu-Ming Liu

We investigate the quantum anomalous Hall effect in a mixture of ultracold neutral bosons and fermions held on a hexagonal optical lattice. In the strong atom-atom interaction limit, composite fermions composed of one fermion with bosons or bosonic holes in the mixture are formed. Such composite fermions have already been generated successfully in experiment [Nat. Phys. 7, 642 (2011)]. Here we predict that this kind of composite fermion may provide a realization of the quantum anomalous Hall effect by tuning the atom-atom interaction or the filling of the bosons in the mixture. We also discuss the corresponding experimental signatures of the quantum anomalous Hall effect in the Bose-Fermi mixture on hexagonal optical lattice.

Engineering superfluidity in Bose-Fermi mixtures of ultracold atoms

Daw-Wei Wang, Mikhail D. Lukin, Eugene Demler

We investigate many-body phase diagrams of atomic boson-fermion mixtures loaded in the two-dimensional optical lattice. Bosons mediate an attractive, finite-range interaction between fermions, leading to fermion pairing phases of different orbital symmetries. Specifically, we show that by properly tuning atomic and lattice parameters it is possible to create superfluids with $s$-, $p$-, and $d$-wave pairing symmetry as well as spin and charge density wave phases. These phases and their stability are analyzed within the mean-field approximation for systems of $^{40}\mathrm{K}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ and $^{40}\mathrm{K}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ mixtures. For the experimentally accessible regime of parameters, superfluids with unconventional fermion pairing have transition temperature around a percent of the Fermi energy.

Quantum Monte Carlo simulation of three-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures

Arata Yamamoto, Tetsuo Hatsuda

Exploratory simulations of Bose-Fermi mixtures on the three-dimensional optical lattice at finite temperature are performed by adopting the lattice quantum chromodynamics technique. We analyze the bosonic superfluid transition and its dependence on the strength of the boson-fermion coupling. The particle densities and the pair occupancies are also studied to understand the effect of the boson-fermion coupling to the microscopic properties of the system. The effect of the induced fermion-fermion interaction by the boson density fluctuation is clearly seen.
