Abstract

Exploratory simulations of Bose-Fermi mixtures on the three-dimensional optical lattice at finite temperature are performed by adopting the lattice quantum chromodynamics technique. We analyze the bosonic superfluid transition and its dependence on the strength of the boson-fermion coupling. The particle densities and the pair occupancies are also studied to understand the effect of the boson-fermion coupling to the microscopic properties of the system. The effect of the induced fermion-fermion interaction by the boson density fluctuation is clearly seen.

Fermion-induced decoherence of bosons in optical lattices

Akiko Masaki, 弘之 森

Bose-Fermi mixtures with attractive Bose-Fermi interactions in one-dimensional optical lattices are studied by using Quantum Monte Carlo simulations of an extended Bose-Fermi Hubbard model. We first derived the extended Hubbard model with the hopping terms of each species modified to include interaction effects. Bosonic Mott transition induced by introducing fermions into bosons is demonstrated by the simulations.

Superfluid and Mott-insulator phases of one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures

Aleksander Zujev, A. Baldwin, Richard T. Scalettar +3 more

We study the ground state phases of Bose-Fermi mixtures in one-dimensional optical lattices with quantum Monte Carlo simulations using the canonical worm algorithm. Depending on the filling of bosons and fermions, and the on-site intra- and interspecies interaction, different kinds of incompressible and superfluid phases appear. On the compressible side, correlations between bosons and fermions can lead to a distinctive behavior of the bosonic superfluid density and the fermionic stiffness, as well as of the equal-time Green functions, which allow one to identify regions where the two species exhibit anticorrelated flow. We present here complete phase diagrams for these systems at different fillings and as a function of the interaction parameters.

Mott Transition of Bose–Fermi Mixtures in Optical Lattices Induced by Attractive Interactions

Akiko Masaki, 弘之 森

We numerically studied Bose–Fermi mixtures in one-dimensional optical lattices using a modified Bose–Fermi–Hubbard model. We derived the modified Bose–Fermi–Hubbard model in a tight-binding approximation, retaining the terms which were usually ignored. Quantum Monte Carlo simulations were then performed on the model to demonstrate a bosonic Mott transition of the Bose–Fermi mixtures. This gives another scenario of the fermion-induced decoherence of bosons observed in some experiments.

Localization of Bose-Fermi Mixtures in One-Dimensional Incommensurate Lattices

Akiko Masaki, 弘之 森

We studied the localization property of Bose-Fermi mixture systems on incommensurate optical lattices by using quantum Monte-Carlo simulations. We found a characteristic behavior of the superfluid density when changing the Bose-Bose interactions and Bose-Fermi interactions over a wide range. The superfluidity of the bosons was enhanced in the presence of the fermions by the repulsive Bose-Fermi interactions which counteracted the localization of the bosons. With attractive Bose-Fermi interactions, on the other hand, the superfluidity is also enhanced by a different mechanism when the number of the bosons is much larger than that of the fermions.

Lattice simulation of ultracold atomic Bose- Fermi mixtures

Arata Yamamoto

Bose-Fermi mixtures have been recently realized and invesitigated in ultracold atomic experiments. We formulate quantum Monte Carlo simulation of Bose-Fermi mixtures on the (3+1)-dimensional lattice. As its first application, we analyze the boson-fermion pair correlation and the phase diagram of the Bose-Einstein condensation.

Finite-temperature study of Bose-Fermi superfluid mixtures

B. Ramachandhran, S. G. Bhongale, Han Pu

Ultracold atom experiments offer the unique opportunity to study mixing of different types of superfluid states. Our interest is in superfluid mixtures comprising of particles with different statistics---Bose and Fermi. Such scenarios occur naturally, for example, in dense quantum chromodynamics (QCD) matter. Interestingly, cold atomic experiments are performed in traps with finite spatial extent, thus critically destabilizing the occurrence of various homogeneous phases. Critical to this analysis is the understanding that the trapped system can undergo phase separation, resulting in a unique situation where phase transition in either species (bosons or fermions) can overlap with the phase separation between possible phases. In the present work, we illustrate how this intriguing interplay manifests in an interacting two-species atomic mixture---one bosonic and another fermionic with two spin components---within a realistic trap configuration. We further show that such interplay of transitions can render the nature of the ground state to be highly sensitive to the experimental parameters and the dimensionality of the system.
