Abstract

We studied the localization property of Bose-Fermi mixture systems on incommensurate optical lattices by using quantum Monte-Carlo simulations. We found a characteristic behavior of the superfluid density when changing the Bose-Bose interactions and Bose-Fermi interactions over a wide range. The superfluidity of the bosons was enhanced in the presence of the fermions by the repulsive Bose-Fermi interactions which counteracted the localization of the bosons. With attractive Bose-Fermi interactions, on the other hand, the superfluidity is also enhanced by a different mechanism when the number of the bosons is much larger than that of the fermions.

Superuid and insulator of dirty Bose-Fermi mixture

Takehiko Mori, S Ikeda

One-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixture systems in a random potential are numerically investigated with focus on their superfluidity and localization properties. It is known that one-dimensional bosons and fermions behave differently in a weak random potential: Interacting bosons in a weak random potential exhibit superfluidity if the interactions are repulsive and not too strong, while interacting fermions with repulsive forces are localized in the presence of randomness. So the question is what happens if weakly interacting bosons and fermions are mixed in a random potential, which might be actually realized by the technique of trapping atoms on a random optical lattice. To answer this question we performed quantum Monte Carlo simulations of bosons and fermions on a one-dimensional lattice with random site energies. The result showed that when the boson-fermion interactions were attractive, both bosons and fermions tended to be localized. However when the boson- fermion interactions were repulsive and relatively weak, the superfluidity of bosons was enhanced and the fermions were delocalized.

Visibility pattern of Bose–Fermi mixtures in one-dimensional incommensurate lattices

Akiko Masaki, 弘之 森

We performed numerical simulations to demonstrate localization phenomena of Bose–Fermi mixture systems on incommensurate optical lattices by changing Bose–Bose and Bose–Fermi interactions. Visibility patterns of the bosons were measured to observe bosonic coherence in various selections of the interaction parameters. We found that the coherence was enhanced with repulsive Bose–Fermi interactions. It was also enhanced with attractive Bose–Fermi interactions but only in certain conditions. The enhancement by repulsive interactions and that by attractive interactions occurred with different mechanisms.

Superfluid and Mott-insulator phases of one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures

Aleksander Zujev, A. Baldwin, Richard T. Scalettar +3 more

We study the ground state phases of Bose-Fermi mixtures in one-dimensional optical lattices with quantum Monte Carlo simulations using the canonical worm algorithm. Depending on the filling of bosons and fermions, and the on-site intra- and interspecies interaction, different kinds of incompressible and superfluid phases appear. On the compressible side, correlations between bosons and fermions can lead to a distinctive behavior of the bosonic superfluid density and the fermionic stiffness, as well as of the equal-time Green functions, which allow one to identify regions where the two species exhibit anticorrelated flow. We present here complete phase diagrams for these systems at different fillings and as a function of the interaction parameters.

High-Temperature Atomic Superfluidity in Lattice Bose-Fermi Mixtures

Fabrizio Illuminati, Alexander P. Albus

We consider atomic Bose-Fermi mixtures in optical lattices and study the superfluidity of fermionic atoms due to s-wave pairing induced by boson-fermion interactions. We prove that the induced fermion-fermion coupling is always attractive if the boson-boson on-site interaction is repulsive, and predict the existence of an enhanced BEC-BCS crossover as the strength of the lattice potential is varied. We show that for direct on-site fermion-fermion repulsion, the induced attraction can give rise to superfluidity via s-wave pairing at striking variance with the case of pure systems of fermionic atoms with direct repulsive interactions.

Supersolids in one-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures

F. Hébert, G. G. Batrouni, X. Roy +1 more

Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we study a mixture of bosons and fermions loaded on an optical lattice. With simple on-site repulsive interactions, this system can be driven into a solid phase. We dope this phase and, in analogy with pure bosonic systems, identify the conditions under which the bosons enter a supersolid phase, i.e., exhibit at the same time charge density-wave and superfluid order. We perform finite-size scaling analysis to confirm the presence of a supersolid phase and discuss its properties, showing that it is a collective phase that also involve phase coherence of the fermions.

Trapped Bose-Fermi mixture in an optical lattice

Akiko Masaki, Sota Tsukada, 弘之 森

We study distinctive features of local Mott insulator of trapped Bose-Fermi mixture systems on an optical lattice by using Monte-Carlo simulations of one-dimensional Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model. It was found that each species of the bosons and the fermions in a Mott insulator state had a finite stiffness but the density correlation function exhibited a quasi-long-range-order. This strongly suggested that in actual experiments the bosons and fermions of a commensurate filling with the lattice sites would form a Mott insulator state under strong interatomic interactions and have an order in their positional configuration.
