Analytical model of the single emitter laser with modulated coupling constant

Abstract

Abstract Using the master equation for the density operator of the laser field, we constructed an analytic model of a single emitter laser under a strong atom-field coupling in the non-stationary regime, that is obtained by coupling constant modulation at the defined frequency. The model demonstrated the emergence of a harmonic force, that partially compensates for relaxation processes in the quantum system. The mechanism of force occurrence, is described by changing the coupling constant.

Quantum theory of a single-emitter nanolaser

Ларионов Николай Владимирович, Mikhail I. Kolobov

Using two equivalent methods, the Heisenberg-Langevin and the master equation, we investigate the properties of a single-emitter nanolaser: an incoherently pumped single two-level system interacting with a single cavity mode of finite finesse. We are interested in a stationary generation regime when the mean number of photons inside the laser cavity is much larger than unity. In this case we linearize the Heisenberg-Langevin equations around the stationary classical solution and obtain analytical results for the linewidth, the quadrature fluctuation spectra, and the intracavity Mandel $Q$ parameter. As the second method we use the master equation for the density operator of the laser field. Using the coherent-state representation of the density matrix we obtain the stationary solution for the Glauber $P$ function of the laser mode and investigate the quantum statistics of the laser field and its threshold behavior. We compare the results of both methods with numerical simulations and find very good agreement. In the end we use our theoretical results for analyzing experiment with single-ion nanolasers.

Quantum Squeezing of the Field of a Single-Atom Laser under Conditions of a Variable Coupling Constant

V. A. Bobrikova, R. A. Khachatryan, К. А. Баранцев +1 more

Abstract A nonstationary regime of squeezed-light generation by a single-atom laser is investigated. Dependences of the quantum-squeezing parameter and radiation intensity on modulation frequency of the atom–field coupling constant are obtained. It is demonstrated that a resonance appears at the modulation frequency equal to twice the average coupling constant, which leads to a more efficient quantum squeezing in a nonstationary harmonic regime than in the case of a stationary regime for the same values of the relaxation and pump parameters.

Quantum optical master equations: The one-atom laser

Christian Ginzel, Hans‐Jürgen Briegel, Ullrich Martini +2 more

We present a detailed numerical study of the one-atom laser, that is, a single two-level atom interacting with one lasing mode, whereby both the atom and the photon field are coupled to reservoirs. The stationary as well as the dynamical properties of the model are calculated directly from the quantum master equation with the help of two numerical methods. These numerical methods do not need any quasi-probability representation and they do not require approximations. We find that the one-atom laser exhibits most of the typical features of a normal laser. In the region far below threshold some aspects, among them the linewidth, are changed due to eigenvalues of the master equation with imaginary parts. In this regime the complexity of the eigenvalues prominently enters the dynamical behavior.

Bifurcation analysis of a mean field laser equation

Franco Fagnola, Carlos M. Mora

We study the dynamics of the solution of a non-linear quantum master equation describing a simple laser under the mean field approximation. The quantum system is formed by a single mode optical cavity and a set of two level atoms that are coupled to two reservoirs. First, we establish the existence of a unique regular stationary state for the non-linear evolution equation under consideration. Second, we examine the free interaction solutions, i.e., the solutions to the non-linear quantum master equation that coincide with unitary evolutions generated by the Hamiltonian resulting from neglecting the interactions between the laser mode, atoms and the bath. We obtain that a family of non-constant free interaction solutions is born at the regular stationary state as a relevant parameter, which is denoted by $C_\mathfrak{b} $, passes through the critical value $1$. These free interaction solutions yield the periodic solutions of the Maxwell Bloch equations modeling our physical system in the framework of the semiclassical laser theory. Third, in case $ C_\mathfrak{b} < 1$ we deduce that the system converges exponentially fast to the equilibrium, and so the regular stationary state is a globally asymptotically stable equilibrium solution. Thus, the quantum system has a Hopf bifurcation at $C_\mathfrak{b} =1 $.

Theory of a single-atom laser including light forces

Thomas Salzburger, P. Domokos, Helmut Ritsch

We study a single incoherently pumped atom moving within an optical high-$Q$ resonator in the strong-coupling regime. Using a semiclassical description for the atom and field dynamics, we derive a closed system of differential equations to describe this coupled atom-field dynamics. For sufficiently strong pumping, the system starts lasing when the atom gets close to a field antinode, and the associated light forces provide for self-trapping of the atom. For a cavity mode blue detuned with respect to the atomic transition frequency, this is combined with cavity-induced motional cooling, allowing for long-term steady-state operation of such a laser. The analytical results for temperature and field statistics agree well with our earlier predictions based on quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We find sub-Doppler temperatures that decrease with gain and coupling strength, and can even go beyond the limit of passive cavity cooling. Besides demonstrating the importance of light forces in single-atom lasers, this result also gives strong evidence to enhance laser cooling through stimulated emission in resonators.

Glauber-Sudarshan P function for a single-emitter laser

A.V. Vikentyev, V. Yu. Goryainov, Ларионов Николай Владимирович

We consider the model of a single-emitter laser: an incoherently pumped single two-level system interacting with a single cavity mode of finite finesse. In the stationary regime using normally-ordered diagonal representation of the density matrix over the coherent states we derive equation for the phase-averaged Glauber-Sudarshan P function. In the strong-coupling regime between atom and cavity mode the asymptotic solution of this equation is obtained. This solution is a linear combination of two basis solutions. We analyze one of them which was ignored in previous work without any discussions.
