Progress towards a widely usable integrated silicon photonic photon-pair source

Chaoxuan Ma, Xiaoxi Wang, Shayan Mookherjea

Photon-pair generation at telecommunication wavelengths using high-quality silicon microring resonators is an active area of research. Here, we report on significant progress towards the ultimate goal of an integrated silicon microchip for bright generation of photon pairs with multiple stages of tunable optical filtering on the same chip. A high pair generation brightness of 6.5×1010 pairs/s/mW2/nm is achieved. The resonance of the high-Q silicon microring resonator can be monitored using a high dynamic range readout of a photocurrent in an all-silicon p-i-n diode fabricated across the waveguide cross-section, which is used to align the ring resonance to the passbands or stopbands of the filters.

On chip source of photon pairs with integrated pump filtering and signal/idler demultiplexing

Nicholas C. Harris, Davide Grassani, Angelica Simbula +7 more

Considerable research work is being devoted to the integration of quantum optical components on a silicon chip [1]. Many results have been achieved on the generation of quantum states of light in silicon photonic devices, but all the sources demonstrated so far need off-chip filtering stages to clean the generated photons before detection. This necessity for off-chip components hinders usability in a completely integrated platform. In this work [2] we demonstrate for the first time on-chip generation of photon pairs via a silicon microring resonator fully integrated with spectral filters for the pump on the same chip. The sample, shown in Fig. 1 a, is a reconfigurable silicon photonic integrated circuit based on Bragg reflectors and tunable ring resonators. The combination of these devices results in pump rejection by more than 95 dB in a single chip, reducing the pump intensity to less than the flux of the photon pairs generated by spontaneous four wave mixing (Fig 1 b).

Spectrally multiplexed and tunable-wavelength photon pairs at 155 μm from a silicon coupled-resonator optical waveguide

Ranjeet Kumar, Jun Rong Ong, John Recchio +2 more

Using a compact optically pumped silicon nanophotonic chip consisting of coupled silicon microrings, we generate photon pairs in multiple pairs of wavelengths around 1.55 μm. The wavelengths are tunable over several nanometers, demonstrating the capability to generate wavelength division multiplexed photon pairs at freely chosen telecommunications-band wavelengths.

Highly Correlated Photon-Pair Generation from a Silicon Waveguide Integrated with on-Chip Pump-Rejection Filters

Jong-Moo Lee, Wook‐Jae Lee, Minsu Kim +1 more

Silicon photonics is an attractive technology toward an integrated quantum optical platform including quantum-correlated photon-pair sources and interference circuits [1-3]. Photon pairs can be generated based on spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) with a strong pump field, but the co-propagating pump field should be separated by high-extinction pump-rejection filters (PRFs) [2, 3].
