Strong Odd Bond - Weak Even Bond Picture in the Half-Filled One-Dimensional Hubbard Model

Abstract

We study the strong odd bond - weak even bond picture by measuring the bond energy and the half-chain entanglement entropy in the one-dimensional Hubbard model. By using the infinite density matrix renormalization group with matrix product operator, we obtain the ground state of the matrix product state. As a function of the bond dimension, the bond energy and the half-chain entanglement entropy support the strong odd bond - weak even bond picture. From the expectation values of the occupation number, we numerically observe that the odd - even effect appears only for the half-filling case with a finite bond dimension. Our results confirm that the matrix product operator method is successful in exploring itinerant fermionic systems.

Mott transition and dimerization in the one-dimensional SU(n) Hubbard model

K. Buchta, Örs Legeza, E. Szirmai +1 more

The one-dimensional $\mathrm{SU}(n)$ Hubbard model is investigated numerically for $n=2$, 3, 4, and 5 at half-filling and $1∕n$ filling using the density-matrix renormalization-group method. The energy gaps and various quantum information entropies are calculated. In the half-filled case, finite spin and charge gaps are found for arbitrary positive $U$ if $n>2$. Furthermore, it is shown that the transition to the gapped phase at ${U}_{c}=0$ is of Kosterlitz-Thouless type and is accompanied by a bond dimerization both for even and odd $n$. In the $1∕n$-filled case, the transition has similar features as the metal-insulator transition in the half-filled SU(2) Hubbard model. The charge gap opens exponentially slowly for $U>{U}_{c}=0$, the spin sector remains gapless, and the ground state is nondimerized.

Half-chain entanglement entropy in the one-dimensional spinless fermion model

Myung-Hoon Chung

We calculate the half-chain entanglement entropy of the ground state in the one-dimensional spinless fermion model. Considering a tiny corner of the Hilbert space represented by matrix product states, we efficiently find the ground state by using infinite time-evolving block decimation. The Schmidt coefficients are used to determine the half-chain entanglement entropy. Using the bond dimension scaling of the half-chain entanglement entropy, we find the critical region, which is consistent with the previous results.

Entanglement structure of the Hubbard model in momentum space

G. Ehlers, Jenő Sólyom, Örs Legeza +1 more

We study the properties of the ground states of the one- and two-dimensional Hubbard models at half-filling and moderate doping using entanglement-based measures, which we calculate numerically using the momentum-space density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). In particular, we investigate quantities such as the single-site entropy and two-site mutual information of single-particle momentum states as well as the behavior of the bipartite subsystem entropy for partitions in momentum space. The distribution of these quantities in momentum space gives insight into the fundamental nature of the ground state, insight that can be used to make contact with weak-coupling-based analytic approaches and to optimize numerical methods, the momentum-space DMRG in particular. We study the site and subsystem entropies as a function of interaction strength $U$ and system size. In both the one- and two-dimensional cases, we find that the subsystem entropy scales proportionally to ${U}^{2}$ for weak $U$ and proportionally to volume. Nevertheless, the optimized momentum-space DMRG can provide variationally accurate results for the two-dimensional Hubbard model at weak coupling for moderate system sizes.

Exploiting the links between ground-state correlations and independent-fermion entropy in the Hubbard model

T. S. Müller, W. Töws, G. M. Pastor

The ground-state properties of the half-filled Hubbard model are investigated in the framework of lattice density functional theory. The single-particle density matrix ${\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{ij\ensuremath{\sigma}}$ is regarded as the central variable of the many-body problem, where $i$ and $j$ refer to the lattice sites and $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ to the spin. The interaction-energy functional $W[{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{ij\ensuremath{\sigma}}]$ is calculated exactly for representative finite periodic systems by performing exact Lanczos diagonalizations. The relationship between $W[{\ensuremath{\gamma}}_{ij\ensuremath{\sigma}}]$ and the entropy $S[{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\mathbit{k}\ensuremath{\sigma}}]$ of independent fermions with natural-orbital occupations ${\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\mathbit{k}\ensuremath{\sigma}}$ is analyzed. A simple approximation to the interaction energy of the half-filled Hubbard model is proposed, which takes the form $W=W(S[{\ensuremath{\eta}}_{\mathbit{k}\ensuremath{\sigma}}])$. Using this functional we derive the ground-state energy, kinetic energy, average number of double occupations, charge distribution, magnetic susceptibility, and field-induced spin polarization in one-, two-, and three-dimensional periodic lattices. The limit of infinite dimensions is also explored. The accuracy of the method is assessed by comparison with available exact numerical or analytical results. Goals, limitations, and possible extensions of the domain of applicability of the functional are discussed.

Existence of Bond-Order-Wave Phase in One-Dimensional Extended Hubbard Model

Guanghua Liu, Chun‐Hai Wang

By using the density matrix renormalization group technique, the phase diagram of the half-filling extended Hubbard model is investigated. The conventional order parameter, the two-site entanglement entropy, and the block-block entanglement entropy are analyzed in detail. According to the numerical results, in the weak coupling region, an intermediate bond-order-wave (BOW) phase is shown to exist indeed between the charge-density-wave (CDW) and the spin-density-wave (SDW) phases. The critical phase transition points are determined by the singularity of the first order derivative of two-site entanglement entropy. In strong coupling region, a direct phase transition occurs from SDW phase to CDW phase, and shows discontinuous (first order) character accompanied with energy level crossing. The numerical results support the phase diagram proposed previously by some authors Sengupta et al., (2002); Sandvik et al., (2004); Zhang, (2004). Therefore, the quantum entanglement is a sensitive tool to describe quantum phase transitions in strongly correlated electron systems.

Critical entanglement for the half-filled extended Hubbard model

Jon Spalding, Shan-Wen Tsai, David K Campbell

We study the ground state of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model at half filling using the entanglement entropy calculated by density matrix renormalization-group techniques. We apply curve fitting and scaling methods to accurately identify a second-order critical point as well as a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless critical point. Using open boundary conditions and medium-sized lattices with very small truncation errors, we are able to achieve similar accuracy to that of previous authors. We also report observations of finite-size and boundary effects that can be remedied with careful pinning.
