Boundary-induced singularity in strongly-correlated quantum systems at finite temperature

Ding-Zu Wang, Guo‐Feng Zhang, Maciej Lewenstein +1 more

Abstract Exploring the bulk-boundary correspondences and the boundary-induced phenomena in the strongly-correlated quantum systems belongs to the most fundamental topics of condensed matter physics. In this work, we study the bulk-boundary competition in a simulative Hamiltonian, with which the thermodynamic properties of the infinite-size translationally-invariant system can be optimally mimicked. The simulative Hamiltonian is constructed by introducing local interactions on the boundaries, coined as the entanglement-bath Hamiltonian (EBH) that is analogous to the heat bath. The terms within the EBH are variationally determined by a thermal tensor network method, with coefficients varying with the temperature of the infinite-size system. By treating the temperature as an adjustable hyper-parameter of the EBH, we identify a discontinuity point of the coefficients, dubbed as the ‘boundary quench point’ (BQP), whose physical implication is to distinguish the point, below which the thermal fluctuations from the boundaries to the bulk become insignificant. Fruitful phenomena are revealed when considering the simulative Hamiltonian, with the EBH featuring its own hyper-parameter, under the canonical ensembles at different temperatures. Specifically, a discontinuity in bulk entropy at the BQP is observed. The exotic entropic distribution, the relations between the symmetries of Hamiltonian and BQP, and the impacts from the entanglement-bath dimension are also explored. Our results show that such a singularity differs from those in the conventional thermodynamic phase transition points that normally fall into the Landau–Ginzburg paradigm. Our work provides the opportunities on exploring the exotic phenomena induced by the competition between the bulk and boundaries.

Flat band and Bulk-Boundary correspondence in a non-Hermitian trimerized lattice model with generic boundary conditions

Supriyo Ghosh, Pijush K. Ghosh, Shreekantha Sil

We consider a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger(SSH)-type trimer model with next-nearest-neighbor(NNN) interaction and balanced loss-gain(BLG) to study the combined effect of lattice symmetries, topology, non-hermiticity and general boundary conditions(GBC)on the existence of flat band and the nature of Bulk-Boundary correspondence(BBC). We derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an entirely real spectrum under the periodic boundary condition(PBC). The exact expressions for the compact localized states(CLS) and energy eigenvalues corresponding to flat bands are derived analytically under the PBC. We establish topological phase transitions(TPT) for PT-symmetry and pseudo-chiral symmetry through the computation of the Zak phase and sub-lattice Zak phase, respectively. The Hamiltonian under the open boundary condition(OBC) is studied numerically, and edge states are observed in the topologically non-trivial phase, thereby establishing the non-hermitian BBC. The CLS exists in both bulk and the boundary for systems having only pseudo-chiral symmetry, and an additional PT-symmetry destroys the CLS at the boundary. We generalize a known formalism to study the same Hamiltonian under GBC, and derive analytic expressions for the energy and eigenstates for a class of boundary conditions in parametric ranges which admit flat band under the PBC. The edge states for these boundary conditions, including the OBC, are obtained analytically in the topologically non-trivial phase, thereby establishing BBC. The non-hermitian skin effect(NHSE) is seen in the model with reciprocal bulk interaction and strongly non-reciprocal boundary terms. The winding number based on spectral topology is computed analytically.

Characterizing bulk-boundary correspondence of one-dimensional non-Hermitian interacting systems by edge entanglement entropy

Weitao Chen, Liangtao Peng, Hantao Lu +1 more

Dramatically different from the Hermitian systems, the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence (BBC) is broken in the non-Hermitian systems. In this paper, we use edge entanglement entropy to characterize the topological properties of non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Hubbard model. For free fermions, we study the scaling behavior of entanglement entropy and demonstrate that the edge entanglement entropy is a good indicator to delimit different phases of non-Hermitian systems. We further generalize the edge entanglement entropy to the non-Hermitian interacting Hubbard chain and obtain the topological phase diagram in the plane of interaction and non-Hermitian hopping amplitudes. It is found that the Hubbard interaction diminishes and weakens the breakdown of the bulk-boundary correspondence, which eventually disappears at some critical value of interaction.
