Abstract

Ⅰ. INTRODUCTION Since Berry’s discovery of the geometric phase in quantum adiabatic evolution, there has been increased interest in this holonomy phenomenon referred to as Berry phase. Aharonov and Anandan removed the adiabatic condition and studied the geometric phase (AA phase) for any cyclic evolution. AA phase and Berry phase have been verified in experi

Control of the Geometric Phase and Nonequivalence between Geometric-Phase Definitions in the Adiabatic Limit

Xiaosong Zhu, Peixiang Lu, Manfred Lein

If the time evolution of a quantum state leads back to the initial state, a geometric phase is accumulated that is known as the Berry phase for adiabatic evolution or as the Aharonov-Anandan (AA) phase for nonadiabatic evolution. We evaluate these geometric phases using Floquet theory for systems in time-dependent external fields with a focus on paths leading through a degeneracy of the eigenenergies. Contrary to expectations, the low-frequency limits of the two phases do not always coincide. This happens as the degeneracy leads to a slow convergence of the quantum states to adiabaticity, resulting in a nonzero finite or divergent contribution to the AA phase. Steering the system adiabatically through a degeneracy provides control over the geometric phase as it can cause a π shift of the Berry phase. On the other hand, we revisit an example of degeneracy crossing proposed by AA. We find that, at suitable driving frequencies, both geometric-phase definitions give the same result and the dynamical phase is zero due to the symmetry of time evolution about the point of degeneracy, providing an advantageous setup for manipulation of quantum states.

Aharonov-Anandan geometric phase for spin-1/2 periodic Hamiltonians

David J. Fernández C., Luis Miguel Nieto, M. A. del Olmo +1 more

The authors calculate exactly the Aharonov-Anandan phase for the evolution of a spin-1/2 in some periodic time-dependent magnetic fields, and give a discussion of the results versus the adiabatic ones. In particular, they analyse the existence of cyclic states and show explicit examples of systems with a prescribed value of the AA phase for all cyclic evolutions.

Cyclic Evolution in Quantum Mechanics and the Phases of Bohr-Sommerfeld and Maslov

Robert G. Littlejohn

The Bohr-Sommerfeld and Maslov phases, which occur in the Einstein-Brillouin-Keller quantization rule of semiclassical mechanics, are shown to be examples of Berry's phase. The generalization of Berry's phase due to Aharonov and Anandan, which does not require adiabaticity, is employed.

A study on Berry's geometric phase and the dual Aharonov-Bohm effect

Cássio Cecato Favarato

In this work, we make a review of the literature that the so-called Berry’s geometric phase. A recent issue, which has been employed in various areas of physics. For this, we use, in a number of references, in which many were critical to the theoretical foundation of this work. At first, we focus on the study of the time evolution of quantum systems governed by Hamiltonians operators whose time dependence is manifested by a set of parameters called classical fields. The adiabatic approximation, is justified mathematically when demonstrated the adiabatic theorem. Under these conditions, we obtain geometric phases - Berry’s phase - associated with these systems in different representations, each displaying its particularity. Finally, as a particular case of geometric phase, we studi from the viewpoint of duality transformations of Maxwell’s equations, the dual Aharonov-Bohm effect, extracting the geometric Berry’s phase associated with the dynamics of the magnetic monopole in the presence of the electric vector potential

Evolutions of Yang Phase Under Cyclic Condition and Adiabatic Condition

Qian Shang-Wu, Gu Zhi-Yu

There are three non-integrable phases in literatures: Berry phase, Aharonov–Anandan phase, and Yang phase. This article discusses the evolutions of Yang phase under the cyclic condition and the adiabatic condition for the general time-dependent harmonic oscillator, thus reveals the intimate relations between these three non-integrable phases.

Non-adiabatic Berry phase for periodic Hamiltonians

D J Moore, G E Stedman

Berry's (1984) formulation of the topological phase for periodic Hamiltonians is extended to the case of non-adiabatic evolution by proper choice of initial states. This restores a full parallel with the non-adiabatic formalism of Aharonov and Anandan (1987) for periodic orbits in a projective Hilbert space. The Berry phase for the novel example of a single electron in a rigidly rotating octahedral environment is calculated using both this formalism and that used previously by Aharonov and Anandan and by Page (1987).
