Abstract

We present an analytical model to investigate the dynamic features of the transient Kerr effect in a nonlinear photonic crystal microcavity, and the theoretical predictions agree perfectly with the proposed experimental results. Based on this analytical model, we further derive the critical pump-power condition for the control light in bistable switching based on a nonlinear SCWR system. These results are useful for actual design of optical switching.

High-contrast all-optical bistable switching in photonic crystal microcavities

Mehmet Fatih Yanik, Shanhui Fan, Marin Soljacic A

We present a bistable photonic crystal configuration consisting of a waveguide sided coupled to a single-mode cavity with instantaneous Kerr nonlinearity. We show that such a configuration can generate extremely high contrast between the bistable states in its transmission with low input power. We also provide an analytic theory that can completely account for the entire transient switching dynamics, as revealed by finite difference time domain simulations.

Investigation of the transient Kerr effect in a nonlinear photonic crystal microcavity

Chao Li, Jun-Fang Wu

We present an analytical model and numerical experiments to investigate the dynamic features of the transient Kerr effect (TKE) in an optical period, which is much shorter than the time scale in the case of a pulse pump as commonly proposed. It is found that under the influence of the TKE, the sum of transmission and reflection rate can be far below unity even for a nonlinear photonic crystal structure without any absorption or radiation loss. However, this does not contradict the energy conservation principle. The physical origin for this novel phenomenon is revealed.

Critical conditions of control light for a silicon-based photonic crystal bistable switching

Chao Li, Hong Wang, Jun-Fang Wu +1 more

In this paper, we investigate the critical conditions of control light for a silicon-based photonic crystal bistable switching. By establishing a time-dependent evolution equation, the critical pump power and pump time of the control light are derived, respectively. It is found that with the increase of the frequency detuning of the incident light, the critical power of the control light will rise, while the corresponding critical time will be shortened. It is also revealed that under the same conditions, the critical total power of the multiple-beam control light is less than the one of the single-beam control light. The theoretical predictions show perfect agreement with the simulation results.

Design of high-contrast all-optical bistable switches based on coupled nonlinear photonic crystal microcavities

Shaohui Li, Xuhong Cai, Xiaofan Wang

We present a bistable photonic crystal configuration consisting of a waveguide directly coupled to three microcavities with instantaneous Kerr nonlinearity. Coupled mode theory combined with a numerical simulation based on the finite-difference time-domain technique is employed to design and evaluate the optical configuration. We demonstrate that with the proper choice of resonant frequencies of the constitutional photonic crystal microcavities, such a configuration can function as a high contrast switch, and the contrast between the bistable states in its transmission can be as high as 300. We expect this device to be useful in the practical application of all-optical switches.

Optical bistable behavior involving photonic crystals nonlinear cavity

K. F. Deng, Du Fang Shi

We present an analytical model and numerical experiments to describe optimal bistable switching involving photonic crystals nonlinear cavity. The involving photonic crystals nonlinear cavity is particularly suitable for large-scale all-optical integration. It is interesting to show that the refractive index of the system can be altered by the incident intensity when the incident frequency is tuned to the evanescent mode and the cavity contains a nonlinear Kerr medium. The response of this system to high-intensity incident waves is studied in detail. A cavity host a localized mode at 1.55 um with a Q of 4000 and a mode volume of 0.055 um3, we predict the onset of bistable reflection at incident powers of ~40 mW. The downstream reflections lead to hysteresis loops in the reflectivity that are topologically distinct from conventional Lorentzian-derived loops characteristic of isolated Fabry-Perot cavities. We provide a stability argument that reveals the unstable branches of these unique hysteresis loops, and we illustrate some of the rich bistable behaviors that can be engineered with such downstream sources, this fact may be used to obtain more flexibility in designing nonlinear devices.
