Abstract

In this communication, we present the results of a systematic study of the new behavior of Rb D1 fluorescence line profiles, for laser frequency detuning over the D1 line hyperfine structure observed in optical cell with anti-relaxation coating of high quality. Experimental spectra are analyzed by means of theoretical calculations of D1 line spectrum obtained by numerical simulation. The provided analysis makes it possible to specify the physical processes responsible for the modification of the shape and the amplitude of the fluorescence line profiles. In addition, the experimentally observed dependences of the measured spectrum on the rate and the direction of laser frequency scan are analyzed.

Asymmetric frequency-tuning behavior of the D1 line hyperfine spectrum of Rb vapor contained in high quality paraffin coated optical cell

Significant modification of the spectrum of the D1 line of 85Rb in optical cells with high quality antirelaxation coating on the walls is studied experimentally and theoretically analyzed. The spectral profiles of hyperfine transitions are found to be significantly dependent on the velocity and the direction of the laser frequency scanning. A physical explanation is proposed for the observed features, which is confirmed by numerical simulations. The effect of small magnetic field on hyperfine spectrum is also discussed.

Dynamics of Optical Pumping Processes in Coated Cells Filled with Rb Vapour

A. Krasteva, E. Mariotti, Yordanka V. Dancheva +6 more

Abstract A better theoretical understanding of the atom – surface interactions and of the experimental consequences and applications to a reproducible method for the construction of reliable coated absorption cells is the main scope of our research. In this paper we report on the influence of diode laser intensity and of diode frequency scanning rate on the spectrum of the D2 line of Rb atoms, contained in paraffin or PolyDiMethylSiloxane (PDMS) coated glass cells. The anti-relaxation coating of inner walls of the glass cells allows to extend the optical orientation of atoms induced by the light to the entire cell volume and atomic velocity distribution. Moreover, in order to further investigate the role of atoms adsorbed in the anti-relaxation coatings, the D2 line spectra are compared for two cases: without and with illumination of the walls of the cell by an ultraviolet lamp. A theoretical model based on rate equations is introduced in order to analyze the experimental results. The extracted behaviour is a simple method to test the conditions of a coated surface. This finds applications in all cases where timely assessment of an organic coating layer is critical, from vapour spectroscopy to magneto-optical trapping of rare and radioactive species.

Особенности флуоресценции паров атомов Rb, заключенных в ячейку с антирелаксационным покрытием

The features of the fluorescence spectra of Rb D1 line vapors were studied for the first time using a cell with anti-relaxation PolyDiMethylSiloxane (PDMS) coating. At high intensities (> 200mW/cm2) of a cw narrow-band diode laser in the transmission spectra due to the effect of optical pumping, there are no absorption lines at atomic transitions, while in the fluorescence spectrum, all 8 atomic transitions of the D1 line are pronounced. A strong redistribution of fluorescence intensity is registered for atomic transitions of 85Rb and 87Rb: in particular, the ratio of fluorescence amplitudes for transitions of 87Rb, Fg = 1 - Fe = 1, 2 in a regular cell is 5, while for a PDMS cell it is equal to 1.5. A physical explanation of the observed features of fluorescence in a PDMS cell is given. A significant increase of fluorescence intensity and a change in redistribution at the transitions with increasing of the PDMS cell temperature is demonstrated. It is noted that at large intensities of laser radiation (when there are no peaks on the transmission/absorption spectra of atomic transitions), fluorescence spectra remain the only convenient and informative tool for studying the behavior of atoms.

Spin randomization of light-induced desorbed Rb atoms

We present the first experimental observation of atomic spin randomization of Rb atoms released by light-induced atomic desorption (LIAD). A natural mixture of Rb atoms contained in paraffin and PDMS coated glass cells is irradiated by a free-running diode laser light tuned to the Rb D 2 resonance line. The transmission spectrum of the Rb vapor is thus modified and shows a strong enhancement of the hyperfine optical pumping as the light intensity is increased and the laser-frequency scanning rate is decreased. The D 2 line spectra are compared for two cases: without and with illumination of the walls of the cell by a UV lamp centered around the wavelength of 404 nm. A simple theoretical model based on the solution of the rate balance equations is introduced in order to analyze the experimental results.

Effects of size and dimension in optic relaxation in Rb vapor

Sergey Nikitich Atutov, V. A. Sorokin

Abstract We report on an experiment in which the fluorescence decay time of 5P levels of Rb atoms in a coated vapor cell exceeds several of milliseconds that many orders of magnitude longer than normal decay time of excited of rubidium atoms. This effect has been observed by using the pump laser with fixing frequency and the periodically scan the probing laser frequency of which overlap all Rb hyperfine linens of 5P-5S transition. Long time fluorescence decay take place in wide part of the spherical high quality coated cell. In cylindrical part of the cell or in uncoated cell the long time fluorescence decay was disappeared.

Coherent population trapping resonance structure in paraffin-coated Rb vacuum cells

S. Gateva, Emilia A. Alipieva, Elena T. Taskova +1 more

The fast development of CPT applications and the need of good magnetooptical sensors result in an increased interest in the Coherent Population Trapping (CPT) resonances and the processes that determine their shape. In this work the shape and width of the CPT resonances are investigated in two different paraffin-coated Rb vapor cells from point of view of understanding the processes influencing the shape of the resonances and building of miniature and sensitive detector. The dependence of the shape of the resonances on the laser power is measured. Narrow resonances on three hyperfine transitions of the D1 87Rb line are registered. For explanation of the bright structure in the resonance shapes at low laser powers analysis of the influence of different processes is made.
