Abstract

Abstract We have considered the spin-1/2 XXZ chain model which is exactly solvable with the Bethe anzats method. It is shown adding a single defect away from edges is sufficient to see a chaos signature in the model. In this work, we have studied the time behavior of the Loschmidt-echo (LE) by considering domain-wall and Neel states as two product initial states and also a Bell state as an entangled initial state. We have used the numerical full diagonalization method to have full spectrum of the model. It is shown that very short times behavior of the LE is independent from defect and initial state, and the decay is quadratic. Moreover, results show that in the chaotic regime and for intermediate times, the exponential decay behavior of the LE shows some changes by removing defect from the chain in the domain-wall and Bell states, while no changes is seen in the Neel state. To get some intuition of these changes, we have addressed the relation between the dynamics of the LE and the local density of states features.

Loschmidt Echo for edge of chaos and chaotic sea in Standard Map: Cases Study

Shi, Wenjun

Using the Standard Map model, this study explores the quantum Loschmidt Echo (LE) decay laws for mixed-type phase spaces, including edge of chaos and chaotic sea regimes. A universal decay law is proposed and numerically verified, characterizing the intricate dynamics of LE decay processes with a semi-classical statistical approach. Key findings include three typical decay stages and time-scale relations as well as the critical perturbations for comparing the decay extent, with critical insights into classical-quantum correspondences through the construction of classical ensemble from the uncertainty of quantum state. This work provides analytical and numerical advancements in understanding dynamical stability in quantum systems.

Non-analytic behavior of the Loschmidt echo in XXZ spin chains: Exact results

Lorenzo Piroli, Balázs Pozsgay, Eric Vernier

We address the computation of the Loschmidt echo in interacting integrable spin chains after a quantum quench. We focus on the massless regime of the XXZ spin-1/2 chain and present exact results for the dynamical free energy (Loschmidt echo per site) for a special class of integrable initial states. For the first time we are able to observe and describe points of non-analyticities using exact methods, by following the Loschmidt echo up to large real times. The dynamical free energy is computed as the leading eigenvalue of an appropriate Quantum Transfer Matrix, and the non-analyticities arise from the level crossings of this matrix. Our exact results are expressed in terms of “excited-state” thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations, whose solutions involve non-trivial Riemann surfaces. By evaluating our formulas, we provide explicit numerical results for the quench from the Néel state, and we determine the first few non-analytic points.

The Loschmidt echo in classically chaotic systems: Quantum chaos, irreversibility and decoherence

Fernando Cucchietti

The Loschmidt echo (LE) is a measure of the sensitivity of quantum mechanics to perturbations in the evolution operator. It is defined as the overlap of two wave functions evolved from the same initial state but with slightly different Hamiltonians. Thus, it also serves as a quantification of irreversibility in quantum mechanics. In this thesis the LE is studied in systems that have a classical counterpart with dynamical instability, that is, classically chaotic. An analytical treatment that makes use of the semiclassical approximation is presented. It is shown that, under certain regime of the parameters, the LE decays exponentially. Furthermore, for strong enough perturbations, the decay rate is given by the Lyapunov exponent of the classical system. Some particularly interesting examples are given. The analytical results are supported by thorough numerical studies. In addition, some regimes not accessible to the theory are explored, showing that the LE and its Lyapunov regime present the same form of universality ascribed to classical chaos. In a sense, this is evidence that the LE is a robust temporal signature of chaos in the quantum realm. Finally, the relation between the LE and the quantum to classical transition is explored, in particular with the theory of decoherence. Using two different approaches, a semiclassical approximation to Wigner functions and a master equation for the LE, it is shown that the decoherence rate and the decay rate of the LE are equal. The relationship between these quantities results mutually beneficial, in terms of the broader resources of decoherence theory and of the possible experimental realization of the LE.

Short-time decay of the Loschmidt echo

Diego A. Wisniacki

The Loschmidt echo measures the sensitivity to perturbations of quantum evolutions. We study its short-time decay in classically chaotic systems. Using perturbation theory and throwing out all correlation imposed by the initial state and the perturbation, we show that the characteristic time of this regime is well described by the inverse of the width of the local density of states. This result is illustrated and discussed in a numerical study in a two-dimensional chaotic billiard system perturbed by various contour deformations and using different types of initial conditions. Moreover, the influence to the short-time decay of sub-Planck structures developed by time evolution is also investigated.

Dynamics of decoherence of an entangled pair of qubits locally connected to a one-dimensional disordered spin chain

Sudip Mukherjee, Tanay Nag

Abstract We study the non-equilibrium evolution of concurrence of a Bell pair constituted of two qubits, through the measurement of Loschmidt echo (LE) under the scope of generalized central spin model. The qubits are locally coupled to a one dimensional disordered Ising spin chain. We first show that in equilibrium situation the derivative of LE is able to detect the extent of Griffiths phase that appeared in presence of disordered transverse field only. While in the non-equilibrium situation, the spin chain requires a temporal window to realize the effect of disorder. We show that within this timescale, LE falls off exponentially and this decay is maximally controlled by the initial states and coupling strength. Our detail investigation suggests that there actually exist three types of exponential decay, a Gaussian decay in ultra short time scale followed by two exponential decay in the intermediate time with two different decay exponents. The effect of the disorder starts appearing in the late time power law fall of LE where the power law exponent is strongly dependent on disorder strength and the final state but almost independent of initial states and coupling strength. This feature allows us to indicate the presence of Griffiths phase. To be precise, continuously varying critical exponent and wide distribution of relaxation time imprint their effect in LE in the late time limit where the power law fall is absent for quenching to a Griffiths phase. Here, LE vanishes following the fast exponential fall. Interestingly, for off-critical quenching LE attains a higher saturation value for increasing disorder strength, otherwise vanishes for a clean spin chain, referring to the fact that disorder prohibits the rapid decay of entanglement in long time limit. Moreover, we show that disorder is also able to destroy the light cone like nature of post quench quasi-particles as LE does not sense the singular time scales appearing for clean spin chain with qubits coupled at symmetric positions.

Loschmidt echo in many-body localized phases

Maksym Serbyn, Dmitry A. Abanin

The Loschmidt echo, defined as the overlap between quantum wave function evolved with different Hamiltonians, quantifies the sensitivity of quantum dynamics to perturbations and is often used as a probe of quantum chaos. In this work we consider the behavior of the Loschmidt echo in the many-body localized phase, which is characterized by emergent local integrals of motion and provides a generic example of nonergodic dynamics. We demonstrate that the fluctuations of the Loschmidt echo decay as a power law in time in the many-body localized phase, in contrast to the exponential decay in few-body ergodic systems. We consider the spin-echo generalization of the Loschmidt echo and argue that the corresponding correlation function saturates to a finite value in localized systems. Slow, power-law decay of fluctuations of such spin-echo-type overlap is related to the operator spreading and is present only in the many-body localized phase, but not in a noninteracting Anderson insulator. While most of the previously considered probes of dephasing dynamics could be understood by approximating physical spin operators with local integrals of motion, the Loschmidt echo and its generalizations crucially depend on the full expansion of the physical operators via local integrals of motion operators, as well as operators which flip local integrals of motion. Hence these probes allow one to get insights into the relation between physical operators and local integrals of motion and access the operator spreading in the many-body localized phase.
