Abstract

Using the Standard Map model, this study explores the quantum Loschmidt Echo (LE) decay laws for mixed-type phase spaces, including edge of chaos and chaotic sea regimes. A universal decay law is proposed and numerically verified, characterizing the intricate dynamics of LE decay processes with a semi-classical statistical approach. Key findings include three typical decay stages and time-scale relations as well as the critical perturbations for comparing the decay extent, with critical insights into classical-quantum correspondences through the construction of classical ensemble from the uncertainty of quantum state. This work provides analytical and numerical advancements in understanding dynamical stability in quantum systems.

The Loschmidt echo in classically chaotic systems: Quantum chaos, irreversibility and decoherence

Fernando Cucchietti

The Loschmidt echo (LE) is a measure of the sensitivity of quantum mechanics to perturbations in the evolution operator. It is defined as the overlap of two wave functions evolved from the same initial state but with slightly different Hamiltonians. Thus, it also serves as a quantification of irreversibility in quantum mechanics. In this thesis the LE is studied in systems that have a classical counterpart with dynamical instability, that is, classically chaotic. An analytical treatment that makes use of the semiclassical approximation is presented. It is shown that, under certain regime of the parameters, the LE decays exponentially. Furthermore, for strong enough perturbations, the decay rate is given by the Lyapunov exponent of the classical system. Some particularly interesting examples are given. The analytical results are supported by thorough numerical studies. In addition, some regimes not accessible to the theory are explored, showing that the LE and its Lyapunov regime present the same form of universality ascribed to classical chaos. In a sense, this is evidence that the LE is a robust temporal signature of chaos in the quantum realm. Finally, the relation between the LE and the quantum to classical transition is explored, in particular with the theory of decoherence. Using two different approaches, a semiclassical approximation to Wigner functions and a master equation for the LE, it is shown that the decoherence rate and the decay rate of the LE are equal. The relationship between these quantities results mutually beneficial, in terms of the broader resources of decoherence theory and of the possible experimental realization of the LE.

Loschmidt echo in quantum maps: the elusive nature of the Lyapunov regime

Ignacio García-Mata, Diego A. Wisniacki

The Loschmidt echo (LE) is a measure of the stability and reversibility of quantum evolution under perturbations of the Hamiltonian. One of the expected and most relevant characteristics of this quantity for chaotic systems is an exponential decay with a perturbation-independent decay rate given by the classical Lyapunov exponent. However, a non-uniform decay—instead of the Lyapunov regime—has been reported in several systems. In this work, we find an analytical semiclassical expression for the averaged fidelity amplitude that can be directly related to the anomalous—unexpected—behaviour of the LE.

Universality of the Lyapunov regime for the Loschmidt echo

Fernando Cucchietti, Horacio M. Pastawski, Rodolfo A. Jalabert

The Loschmidt echo (LE) is a magnitude that measures the sensitivity of quantum dynamics to perturbations in the Hamiltonian. For a certain regime of the parameters, the LE decays exponentially with a rate given by the Lyapunov exponent of the underlying classically chaotic system. We develop a semiclassical theory, supported by numerical results in a Lorentz gas model, which allows us to establish and characterize the universality of this Lyapunov regime. In particular, the universality is evidenced by the semiclassical limit of the de Broglie wavelength going to zero, the behavior for times longer than Ehrenfest time, the insensitivity with respect to the form of the perturbation, and the behavior of individual (nonaveraged) initial conditions. Finally, by elaborating a semiclassical approximation to the Wigner function, we are able to distinguish between classical and quantum origin for the different terms of the LE. This approach renders an understanding for the persistence of the Lyapunov regime after the Ehrenfest time, as well as a reinterpretation of our results in terms of the quantum-classical transition.

The Loschmidt-echo dynamics in a quantum chaos model

Фороузан Мирмасоуди, Sodeif Ahadpour, Javad Vahedi +1 more

Abstract We have considered the spin-1/2 XXZ chain model which is exactly solvable with the Bethe anzats method. It is shown adding a single defect away from edges is sufficient to see a chaos signature in the model. In this work, we have studied the time behavior of the Loschmidt-echo (LE) by considering domain-wall and Neel states as two product initial states and also a Bell state as an entangled initial state. We have used the numerical full diagonalization method to have full spectrum of the model. It is shown that very short times behavior of the LE is independent from defect and initial state, and the decay is quadratic. Moreover, results show that in the chaotic regime and for intermediate times, the exponential decay behavior of the LE shows some changes by removing defect from the chain in the domain-wall and Bell states, while no changes is seen in the Neel state. To get some intuition of these changes, we have addressed the relation between the dynamics of the LE and the local density of states features.

The Loschmidt echo for local perturbations: escape-rate and oscillatory decay regimes

Arseni Goussev, Daniel Waltner, Klaus Richter +1 more

We address the sensitivity of quantum mechanical time evolution by considering the time decay of the Loschmidt echo (LE) (or fidelity) for local perturbations of the Hamiltonian. Within a semiclassical approach we derive analytical expressions for the LE decay for chaotic systems for the whole range from weak to strong local perturbations and identify different decay regimes which complement those known for the case of global perturbations. For weak perturbations a Fermi-golden-rule (FGR) type behavior is recovered. For strong perturbations the escape-rate regime is reached, where the LE decays exponentially with a rate independent of the perturbation strength. The transition between the FGR regime and the escape-rate regime is non-monotonic, i.e. the rate of the exponential time-decay of the LE oscillates as a function of the perturbation strength. We further perform extensive quantum mechanical calculations of the LE based on numerical wave packet evolution which strongly support our semiclassical theory. Finally, we discuss in some detail possible experimental realizations for observing the predicted behavior of the LE.

Loschmidt echo and the local density of states

Natalia Ares, Diego A. Wisniacki

Loschmidt echo (LE) is a measure of reversibility and sensitivity to perturbations of quantum evolutions. For weak perturbations its decay rate is given by the width of the local density of states (LDOS). When the perturbation is strong enough, it has been shown in chaotic systems that its decay is dictated by the classical Lyapunov exponent. However, several recent studies have shown an unexpected nonuniform decay rate as a function of the perturbation strength instead of that Lyapunov decay. Here we study the systematic behavior of this regime in perturbed cat maps. We show that some perturbations produce coherent oscillations in the width of LDOS that imprint clear signals of the perturbation in LE decay. We also show that if the perturbation acts in a small region of phase space (local perturbation) the effect is magnified and the decay is given by the width of the LDOS.
