Abstract

This paper presents a class of regular quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes whose Tanner graphs have girth at least eight. These codes are constructed based on the conventional parity-check matrices of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes with minimum distance 5. Masking their parity-check matrices significantly reduces the numbers of short cycles in their Tanner graphs and results in codes which perform well over the AWGN channel in both waterfall and low error-rate regions.

Reed-Solomon Based Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes: Designs, Girth, Cycle Structure, and Reduction of Short Cycles

Designs and constructions of quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC codes for the AWGN channel are presented. The codes are constructed based on the conventional parity-check matrices of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes and are referred to as RS-QC-LDPC codes. Several classes of RS-QC-LDPC codes are given. Cycle structural properties of the Tanner graphs of codes in these classes are analyzed and specific methods for constructing codes with girth at least eight and reducing their short cycles are presented. The designed codes perform well in both waterfall and low error-rate regions.

Performance of Reed-Solomon Based Quasi-Cyclic LDPC Codes Based on Protograph

Inseon Kim, Hong‐Yeop Song

In this paper, we exploit construction of Reed-Solomon (RS) based Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check (QC-LDPC) codes using protograph combining two existing QC-LDPC codes construction and experiment the performance of the codes. Two constructions have benefits: One is the construction RS based QC-LDPC codes whose girth is at least 8 and another is protograph based QC-LDPC codes to increase the upper bounds of minimum Hamming distance. We construct the protographs with three strategies and two of them have coding gain in sense of bit error rate compare to existing Reed Solomon based QC-LDPC codes.

Construction of QC-LDPC codes based on generalized RS codes with girth larger than 6

Rong Xia Sun, Yu Min Tian, Jingwei Liu

In this paper, an approach for constructing Quasi-cyclic(QC)-LDPC codes with girth larger than 6 based on Generalized Reed-Solomon(GRS) codes is presented. The proposed construction method in conjunction with masking, results in codes whose Tanner graphs have girth 8 or even larger. Experimental results show that, with iterative decoding algorithms, the constructed QC-LDPC codes perform well.

Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check Codes Based on Progressive Cycle Growth Algorithm

Yuanhua Liu, Meiling Zhang, Niu Xin-Liang

Short cycles in the Tanner graph of a given LDPC code has negative effect on the performance of iterative decoding. To improve the performance, we presented an approach for constructing Quasi-Cyclic Low-Density Parity-Check (QC-LDPC) codes whose associated Tanner graph has large girth and a small amount of short cycles. Each column block of the parity check matrix was designed by adding circulant permutation sub-matrices one after another, provided the current parity check matrix has minimal number of short cycles. The condition for the proposed QC-LDPC codes to have girth at least 6 was also analyzed. Regular and irregular QC-LDPC codes with various lengths and rates can be constructed. Simulations show that the proposed QC-LDPC codes have less short cycles and better performance than existing progressive edge growth based QC-LDPC codes.

Combinatorial design-based quasi-cyclic LDPC codes with girth eight

Sina Vafi, Narges Rezvani Majid

This paper presents a novel regular Quasi-Cyclic (QC) Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes with column-weight three and girth at least eight. These are designed on the basis of combinatorial design in which subsets applied for the construction of circulant matrices are determined by a particular subset. Considering the non-existence of cycles four and six in the structure of the parity check matrix, a bound for their minimum weight is proposed. The simulations conducted confirm that without applying a masking technique, the newly implemented codes have a performance similar to or better than other well-known codes. This is evident in the waterfall region, while their error floor at very low Bit Error Rate (BER) is expected.
