We study the phase diagram of the interacting fermionic two-leg ladder, which is featured by pair hopping and interactions of singlet and triplet superconducting channels. By using Abelian bosonization method, we obtain the full phase diagram of our model. The superconducting triplet pairing phase is characterized by a fractional edge spin and interpreted as two Kitaev chains under the mean filed approximation. The pair hopping will give rise to spin-density-wave (SDW) orders and can also support Majorana edge modes in spin channel. At half filling, the resulting Majorana-SDW phase shows additional fractionalization in charge channel, and can be interpreted as two Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) chains in the mean field regime.

We study the ground-state phase diagram of an interacting staggered Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) ladder in the vicinity of the Gaussian quantum critical point. The corresponding effective field theory, which nonperturbatively treats correlation effects in the ladder, is a double-frequency sine-Gordon (DSG) model. It involves two perturbations at the Gaussian fixed point: the deviation from criticality, and umklapp scattering processes. While massive phases with broken symmetries are identified by means of local order parameters, a topological distinction between thermodynamically equivalent phases becomes feasible only when nonlocal fermionic fields, parity, and the string order parameter are included in consideration. We prove that a noninteracting fermionic staggered SSH ladder is exactly equivalent to an O(2)-symmetric model of two decoupled Kitaev-Majorana chains, or two one-dimensional p-wave superconductors. Close to the Gaussian fixed point, the SSH ladder maps to an Ashkin-Teller-like system when interactions are included. Thus, the topological order in the SSH ladder is related to broken-symmetry phases of the associated quantum spin-chain degrees of freedom. The obtained phase diagram includes a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid state that, due to umklapp processes, can become unstable against either spontaneous dimerization or the onset of a charge-density wave (CDW). In these gapped phases, elementary bulk excitations are quantum kinks carrying the charge QF=1/2. For sufficiently strong, long-range interactions, the phase diagram of the model exhibits a bifurcation of the Gaussian critical point into two outgoing Ising criticalities. The latter sandwich a mixed phase in which dimerization coexists with a site-diagonal CDW. In this phase, elementary bulk excitations are represented by two types of topological solitons carrying different fermionic charges, which continuously interpolate between 0 and 1. This phase has also mixed topological properties with coexisting parity and string order parameters.
We theoretically address spin chain analogs of the Kitaev quantum spin model on the honeycomb lattice. The emergent quantum spin-liquid phases or Anderson resonating valence-bond (RVB) states can be understood, as an effective model, in terms of p-wave superconductivity and Majorana fermions. We derive a generalized phase diagram for the two-leg ladder system with tunable interaction strengths between chains allowing us to vary the shape of the lattice (from square to honeycomb ribbon or brickwall ladder). We evaluate the winding number associated with possible emergent (topological) gapless modes at the edges. In the Az phase, as a result of the emergent Z2 gauge fields and $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux ground state, one may build spin-1/2 (loop) qubit operators by analogy to the toric code. In addition, we show how the intermediate gapless B phase evolves in the generalized ladder model. For the brick-wall ladder, the B phase is reduced to one line, which is analyzed through perturbation theory in a rung tensor product states representation and bosonization. Finally, we show that doping with a few holes can result in the formation of hole pairs and leads to a mapping with the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model in polyacetylene; a superconducting-insulating quantum phase transition for these hole pairs is accessible, as well as related topological properties.
The ground-state phase diagram of a two-leg fermionic dipolar ladder with inter-site interactions is studied using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) techniques. We use a state-of-the-art implementation of the DMRG algorithm and finite size scaling to simulate large system sizes with high accuracy. We also consider two different model systems and explore stable phases in half and quarter filling factors. We find that in the half filling, the charge and spin gaps emerge in a finite value of the dipole-dipole and on-site interactions. In the quarter filling case, s-wave superconducting state, charge density wave, homogenous insulating and phase separation phases occur depend on the interaction values. Moreover, in the dipole-dipole interaction, the D-Mott phase emerges when the hopping terms along the chain and rung are the same, whereas, this phase has been only proposed for the anisotropic Hubbard model. In the half filling case, on the other hand, there is either charge-density wave or charged Mott order phase depends on the orientation of the dipole moments of the particles with respect to the ladder geometry.
We show using bosonization methods that extended Hubbard-Heisenberg models on two types of two leg ladders (without flux and with flux $\ensuremath{\pi}$ per plaquette) have commensurate pair-density-wave (PDW) phases. In the case of the conventional (flux-less) ladder, the PDW arises when certain filling fractions for which commensurability conditions are met. For the flux $\ensuremath{\pi}$ ladder, the PDW phase is generally present. The PDW phase is characterized by a finite spin gap and a superconducting order parameter with a finite (commensurate in this case) wave vector and power-law superconducting correlations. In this phase, the uniform superconducting order parameter, the 2kF charge-density-wave (CDW) order parameter and the spin-density-wave N\'eel order parameter exhibit short range (exponentially decaying) correlations. We discuss in detail the case in which the bonding band of the ladder is half filled for which the PDW phase appears even at weak coupling. The PDW phase is shown to be dual to a uniform superconducting (SC) phase with quasi-long-range order. By making use of bosonization and the renormalization group, we determine the phase diagram of the spin-gapped regime and study the quantum phase transition. The phase boundary between PDW and the uniform SC ordered phases is found to be in the Ising universality class. We generalize the analysis to the case of other commensurate fillings of the bonding band, where we find higher-order commensurate PDW states for which we determine the form of the effective bosonized field theory and discuss the phase diagram. We compare our results with recent findings in the Kondo-Heisenberg chain. We show that the formation of PDW order in the ladder embodies the notion of intertwined orders.
We study the topological properties of hardcore bosons on a two-leg ladder consisting of two Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chains that are coupled via hopping and interaction. We chart out the phase diagram for the system and show that based on the relative hopping dimerization pattern along the legs, distinctly different topological phases and phase transitions can occur. When the dimerization along the legs is uniform, we find that the topological nature vanishes for even the slightest rung hopping. For staggered dimerization, the system exhibits a well-defined topological character and a topological phase transition as a function of rung hopping. While the topological phase shows bond order character, the trivial phase shows the behavior of a rung-Mott insulator. For this case, the topological nature is found to survive even in the presence of finite interleg interactions. Moreover, we find that the critical point of the topological phase transition shifts to a higher or a lower rung hopping strength depending on the attractive or repulsive nature of the interaction. To highlight the marked effects of interactions, we propose a scheme involving a Thouless charge pump that provides insights for the topological phases characterized by a quantized particle transport through a periodic modulation of appropriate system parameters. In our studies, we show an interaction-induced charge pumping following specific pumping protocols in the case of staggered dimerization.
Inspired by the observation of a robust d-wave superconducting phase driven by tuning the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) electron hopping in recent density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) studies of six- and eight-leg $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model, we systematically study the phase diagram of the two-leg $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ ladder with the NNN couplings (including NNN hopping and spin interaction) in a large region of doping level, by means of the DMRG calculations. Upon doping from half filling, we identify the Luther-Emery liquid (LEL) phase, which can be distinguished as the pairing-dominant and charge density-dominant regime by comparing the Luttinger parameter ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$. With the growing NNN couplings, pairing correlations are enhanced and correspondingly ${K}_{\ensuremath{\rho}}$ increases, driving the system from the density-dominant to the pairing-dominant regime. In the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phase in the larger doping region, we identify two TLL regimes with different features of charge density correlation. At the quarter filling (1/2 doping level), we find that the strong dimer orders of bond energy in the open system actually decay algebraically and thus do not indicate a spontaneous translational symmetry breaking. Our results show that in the LEL phase of the two-leg ladder, the NNN couplings seem to play the similar role as that on the wider $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ cylinder, and studies on this more accessible system can be helpful toward understanding the emergence of the remarkable d-wave superconducting phase on the wider system.
