Abstract

Large optical nonlinearities can create fancy physics, such as big Schrödinger-cat states and quadrature squeezing. We present the possibility to practically generate macroscopic Schrödinger-cat states, based on a giant Kerr nonlinearity, in a diamond nitrogen-vacancy ensemble interacting with two coupled flux-qubits. The nonlinearity comes from a four-level N-type configuration formed by two coupled flux-qubits under the appropriately driving fields. We discuss the experimental feasibility in the presence of system dissipations using current laboratory technology and our scheme can be easily extended to other ensemble systems.

Preparation of Macroscopic Entangled Coherent States in Nitrogen-Vacancy Centers Ensembles Coupled to a Superconducting Flux Qubit*

Liang-Wei Wang, Zhang-Cai Long

Abstract We propose a potentially practical scheme for creating macroscopic entangled coherent state between two separate nitrogen-vacancy center spin ensembles placed near a superconducting flux qubit. Through the collective magnetic coupling and the in situ tunability of the flux qubit, the arbitrary entangled coherent states of spin ensembles can be achieved with high success possibilities under the influence from decoherence of the flux qubit and spin ensembles. The experimental feasibility and challenge are justified using currently available technology.

Dissipation-assisted generation of steady-state single-mode squeezing of collective excitations in a solid-state spin ensemble

Sheng-li Ma, Fuli Li, Aiping Fang +2 more

A hybrid device consisting of a nitrogen-vacancy-center ensemble $($NVE$)$ in diamond magnetically coupled to a superconducting flux qubit is investigated. The flux qubit is suitably driven by a bichromatic microwave field to induce sidebands, which leads to the desired qubit-NVE coupling. The distinct feature of the present scheme is that the qubit decay as a resource is utilized to steer the stationary state of the NVE into a single-mode squeezed vacuum state via a dissipative repumping process.

Entangling two spin ensembles in diamond nanostructures via a superconducting flux qubit

Yonghong Ma, Xuefeng Zhang

Entanglement between macroscopic systems is a basic resource for many quantum information processing, and so it is crucially important to investigate the possibility of achieving entanglement between macroscopic systems. In this work, we propose a novel mechanism for achieving entanglement between two spin ensembles in diamond nanostructures. The interaction between two spin ensembles, associated with the nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond, are mediated by their coupling with a flux qubit. Using numerical methods, we show that two spin ensembles are entangled with the time evolution under realistic experimental conditions. This macroscopic entanglement between two spin ensembles has important implications for ongoing efforts to realize quantum computation and communication.

One-step generation of multipartite entanglement among nitrogen-vacancy center ensembles

Wan-Lu Song, Zhang‐qi Yin, Wan-li Yang +3 more

We describe a one-step, deterministic and scalable scheme for creating macroscopic arbitrary entangled coherent states (ECSs) of separate nitrogen-vacancy center ensembles (NVEs) that couple to a superconducting flux qubit. We discuss how to generate the entangled states between the flux qubit and two NVEs by the resonant driving. Then the ECSs of the NVEs can be obtained by projecting the flux qubit, and the entanglement detection can be realized by transferring the quantum state from the NVEs to the flux qubit. Our numerical simulation shows that even under current experimental parameters the concurrence of the ECSs can approach unity. We emphasize that this method is straightforwardly extendable to the case of many NVEs.

Generation of macroscopic Schrödinger cat state in diamond mechanical resonator

Qizhe Hou, Wanli Yang, Changyong Chen +1 more

We propose a scheme to generate macroscopic Schrödinger cat state (SCS) in diamond mechanical resonator (DMR) via the dynamical strain-mediated coupling mechanism. In our model, the direct coupling between the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center and lattice strain field enables coherent spin-phonon interactions in the quantum regime. Based on a cyclic Δ-type transition structure of the NV center constructed by combining the quantized mechanical strain field and a pair of external microwave fields, the populations of the different energy levels can be selectively transferred by controlling microwave fields, and the SCS can be created by adjusting the controllable parameters of the system. Furthermore, we demonstrate the nonclassicality of the mechanical SCS both in non-dissipative case and dissipative case. The experimental feasibility and challenge are justified using currently available technology.

Towards the generation of mechanical Kerr-cats: awakening the perturbative quantum Moyal corrections to classical motion

Rodrigo G. Cortiñas

Abstract The quantum to classical transition is determined by the interplay of a trio of parameters: dissipation, nonlinearity, and macroscopicity. Why is nonlinearity needed to see quantum effects? And, is not an ordinary pendulum quite nonlinear already? In this manuscript, we discuss the parameter regime where the dynamics of a massive oscillator should be quantum mechanical in the presence of dissipation. We review the outstanding challenge of the dynamical generation of highly quantum mechanical cat states of a massive ‘pendulum’, known as Kerr-cats. We argue that state-of-the-art cold atom experiments may be in a position to reach such a nonlinear regime, which today singles out superconducting quantum circuits. A way to stabilize Schrödinger cat superpositions of a mechanical atomic oscillator via parametric squeezing and further protected by an unusual form of quantum interference is discussed. The encoding of a neutral atom Kerr-cat qubit is proposed.
