Abstract

We report on the all-fiber single-photon buffer for long-distance quantum communications. The coincidence between single photons generated by two independent heralded single-photon sources was successfully enhanced without degrading the polarization- entanglement.

A heralded single-photon source for quantum communications compatible with long-distance optical fibers

Thiago Ferreira da Silva, T. Pinheiro, GUILHERME BARRETO XAVIER +1 more

This paper reports the implementation of a heralded single-photon source for quantum communications. Pump photons are parametric down-converted into pairs of photons at 810 and 1550 nm inside a non-linear crystal. The former acts as a heralding signal to the telecom wavelength photon. The temporal correlation between the photons is measured, as well as the compromise between source visibility and maximum achievable transmission distance.

All-fiber multiplexed source of high-purity single photons

Robert J. A. Francis-Jones, Rowan A. Hoggarth, Peter J. Mosley

Single-photon sources based on spontaneous photon-pair generation have enabled pioneering experiments in quantum physics. However, next-generation photonic quantum technologies require higher generation probabilities of photons in well-controlled pure states capable of high-visibility interference. We have harnessed bespoke fiber technology to develop virtually alignment-free sources that deliver high-purity heralded single photons in telecoms single-mode fiber. The resulting access to low-loss optical delay enabled us to actively route the heralded output from two almost identical sources to enhance the delivery probability of single photons relative to one individual source. Our results indicate how the scale of photonic quantum technologies might be increased via guided-wave multiplexing of high-purity photons.

Source of Heralded Atom-Photon Entanglement for Quantum Networking

Gianvito Chiarella, Tobias Frank, Leart Zuka +2 more

Communication in quantum networks suffers notoriously from photon loss. Resulting errors can be mitigated with a suitable measurement herald at the receiving node. However, waiting for a herald and communicating the measurement result back to the sender in a repeat-until-success strategy makes the protocol slow and prone to errors from false heralds such as detector dark counts. Here, we implement an entanglement herald at the sending node by employing a cascaded two-photon emission of a single atom into two optical fiber cavities: the polarization of one photon is entangled with the spin of the atom, and the second photon heralds entanglement generation. We show that heralding improves the atom-photon entanglement in-fiber efficiency and fidelity to 68(3)% and 87(2)%, respectively. We highlight the potential of our source for noise-limited long-distance quantum communication by extending the range for constant fidelity or, alternatively, increasing the fidelity for a given distance.

High-performance single-photon generation with commercial-grade optical fiber

Christoph Söller, Offir Cohen, Brian J. Smith +2 more

High-quality quantum sources are of paramount importance for the implementation of quantum technologies. We present here a heralded single-photon source based on commercial-grade polarization-maintaining optical fiber. The heralded photons exhibit a purity of at least 0.84 and an unprecedented heralding efficiency into a single-mode fiber of $85%$. The birefringent phase-matching condition of the underlying four-wave mixing process can be controlled mechanically to optimize the wavelength tuning needed for interfacing multiple sources, as is required for large-scale entanglement generation.

Single pairs of time-bin-entangled photons

Marijn A. M. Versteegh, Michael E. Reimer, Aafke A. van den Berg +5 more

Time-bin-entangled photons are ideal for long-distance quantum communication via optical fibers. Here we present a source where, even at high creation rates, each excitation pulse generates, at most, one time-bin-entangled pair. This is important for the accuracy and security of quantum communication. Our site-controlled quantum dot generates single polarization-entangled photon pairs, which are then converted, without loss of entanglement strength, into single time-bin-entangled photon pairs.

Two-photon interference at a telecom wavelength for quantum networking

Mathis Cohen, Laurent Labonté, Romain Dalidet +2 more

Abstract The interference between two independent photons stands as a crucial aspect of numerous quantum information protocols and technologies. In this work, we leverage fiber-coupled devices, which encompass fibered photon pair-sources and off-the-shelf optics, to demonstrate Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. We employ two distinct single photon sources, namely a heralded single-photon source and a weak coherent laser source, both operating asynchronously in continuous-wave regime. We record two-photon coincidences, showing a state-of-art visibility of 91.9(5)%. This work, compliant with telecom technology, provides realistic backbones for establishing long-range communication based on quantum teleportation in hybrid quantum networks.
