Abstract

A novel optical spectrum compression scheme based on time-dependent filtering is proposed and demonstrated. The spectrum compression is realized by using nonlinear polarization rotation effect to achieve power-dependent filtering of a chirped soliton pulse. In the experiment, a single-stage spectrum compression unit based on the proposed scheme is employed in the soliton self-frequency shift-based optical quantization system to improve the quantization resolution. The experimental results show that an average output spectrum width of 1.5 nm is obtained using the proposed scheme, which is 68% of that using the traditional comb-like fiber scheme. In addition, the quantization resolution using the proposed scheme is 5.1 bits, which is 0.6 bit higher than that using a single-stage spectrum compression unit based on the traditional comb-like fiber structure.

Bi-directional comb-fiber architecture for resolution improvement of optical quantization employing soliton self-frequency shift and spectral compression

Xuyan Zhang, Zhiyao Zhang, Heping Li +1 more

We demonstrate a high-resolution quantization scheme based on soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) and spectral compression in a bi-directional comb-fiber architecture. Our scheme is composed of a Sagnac-loop-based mirror and a comblike combination of two sections of interleaved single-mode fibers (SMFs) and high nonlinear fibers (HNLFs). The Sagnac-loop-based mirror is placed at the terminal of the bus line to reflect the optical pulses back to the bus line to achieve single-stage SSFS and three-stage spectral compression. Quantization with a resolution of 6.2-bit is obtained in the experiment, which is 1.2-bit higher than that of its uni-directional counterpart. Our bidirectional scheme can achieve higher quantization resolution with a small volume and a low cost compared with its uni-directional counterpart.

Real-time and ultrafast optical pulse quantization based on slicing the supercontinuum

Ya Guo, Qiang Cai, Zhiwei Jia +8 more

All-optical analog-to-digital conversion is a paramount issue in modern science. How to implement real-time and ultrafast quantization to optical pulses with different intensities in an all-optical domain is a central problem. Here, we report a real-time demonstration of an all-optical quantization scheme based on slicing the supercontinuum in a nonlinear fiber. In comparison with previous schemes through off-line analysis of the power of different optical spectral components in the supercontinuum, this, to the best of our knowledge, is the first demonstration of such functionality online in the time domain. Moreover, the extinction ratio among the quantized outputs can exceed 10 dB, which further confirms the feasibility of the proposed quantization scheme. The current 3 bit resolution in the proof-of-principle experiment is limited by the current experimental condition, but it can be expected to be greatly enhanced through improving both the spectral width of the generated supercontinuum and the number of filtering channels used.

Single-cycle pulse compression in dense resonant media

Rostislav M. Arkhipov, Mikhail V. Arkhipov, Ayhan Demircan +3 more

We propose here a new approach for compression and frequency up-conversion of short optical pulses in the regime of extreme nonlinear optics in optically dense absorbing media, providing an alternative route to attosecond-scale pulses at high frequencies. This method is based on dynamics of self-induced transparency (SIT) pulses of nearly single cycle duration, leading to single-cycle-scale Rabi oscillations in the medium. The sub-cycle components of an incident pulse behave as separate SIT-pulses, approaching each other and self-compressing, resulting in the threefold compression in time and frequency up-conversion by the same factor. As we show, the scheme can be cascaded, staying at the subsequent stage with nearly the same compression and up-conversion ratio. In this way, as our simulations show, after only few micrometers of propagation, a 700 nm wavelength single cycle pulse can be compressed to a pulse of 200 attoseconds duration located in XUV frequency range.
