Abstract

We discuss the development of compact fiber frequency combs which can enable precision measurements outside of the metrology lab. To illustrate their impact, we present recent results using these combs for optical two-way time-frequency transfer.

An optical innovation for metrology at the quantum limit of precision

Frequency-comb lasers are measuring sticks of the optical world and are used in metrology and sensing applications owing to their rigid, comb-like light spectra and metronomic pulsed output. A frequency comb with time-programmable pulses breaks this rigid mould and, in a demonstration of its utility, measures distances at the quantum limit of precision. A frequency-comb laser can be programmed to change pulse timing with high precision, to improve the sensitivity of distance measurements.

Time–frequency transfer over optical fiber

Ziyang Chen, Yufei Zhang, Bin Luo +1 more

Optical time-frequency transfer establishes the metrological linkage in large-scale clock networks, which facilitates various applications. Fiber-based transfer benefits from the abundant deployment of fiber infrastructures to achieve this advantage. In this review, we provide an overview of the advances in optical two-way time-frequency transfer, which began with characterizing the time-frequency transfer stability. Then, we discuss the system configuration, key modules, main challenges and mainstream transfer methods. Finally, the review concludes with an outlook on further applications toward global-scale high-precision clock networks.

Stabilized Free-Space Optical Frequency Transfer

David R. Gozzard, Sascha Schediwy, B. Stone +2 more

High-precision optical frequency transfer through free-space links will enable advances in fields ranging from coherent optical communication and satellite Doppler ranging, to tests of general relativity and fundamental physics. Previous work has focused on two-way time and frequency transfer techniques using optical frequency combs. Here the authors show that a continuous-wave coherent link can exceed the fractional frequency stability of frequency-comb methods by an order of magnitude. They also highlight and discuss the technical hurdles to implementing similar links over the distances required to reach low Earth orbit.

Frequency comb-to-comb synchronization between a 1.3-km free-space link via an optical frequency transfer

Jaewon Yang, Dong Il Lee, Dong-Chel Shin +3 more

Optical frequency comb technology has been revolutionizing optical fields of ultra-precision metrology over two decades, connecting the SI unit standards of various optical clocks with utmost accuracy and stability. With an increasing demand for free-space communication and time/frequency transfer applications, the frequency comb is stretching its versatility even the outside of laboratory. Still, the environmental disturbances of free space degrade the excellent phase noise of the optical frequencies, hindering the reliable utilization of frequency comb at any desirable location. This research performs comb-to-comb synchronization over a 1.3-km Free-Space Optical link (FSO) with frequency stability of 3.80×10-15 at 0.1 s averaging time throughout the entire comb spectrum. Phase-locked loop compensates the Doppler shift of optical frequencies propagating atmospheric free-space channel, providing optical references for synchronizing distant frequency comb.
