Time Domain Optical Memories Using Rare Earth Ions

Rare earth doped crystals have many attractive characteristics for use in time-domain optical memories. However, the memories rely on the spectral holeburning process which is inefficient in the case of rare earth systems and results in weak signals. The

Time‐frequency domain optical storage in rare‐earth‐doped materials

Ravinder Kachru, Yu Bai, Xiao‐An Shen

The storage of information in the time domain through the use of spectral hole burning rare‐earth‐doped crystals is described. The technique, which is also known as stimulated echo, makes serial read/write data rates of 100 MHz possible. Applications include high‐speed memory, signal processing, high‐speed optical switching, optical interconnects, image processing, and logic operations.

Investigations of hyperfine and isotope structures in optical spectra of crystals with rare-earth ions

Marina N. Popova

This is a review of works on hyperfine and isotope structures in the spectra of rare-earth ions in crystals that have been performed at the Laboratory of Fourier Spectroscopy of the Institute for Spectroscopy, Russian Academy of Sciences. The applicability of these studies to the development of optical quantum memory is discussed.
