Abstract

By using short Gaussian pulses from a monochromatic light source as input ones, we simulate the photon distribution and analyze the output signals of a nonlinear microring resonator with two nonlinear side rings. Such a configuration is called a Panda ring resonator, which is a modified add-drop filter with two alongside phase modulators. We consider the directional couplers, which are characterized by two parameters, i.e., the power coupling coefficient (к) and the power coupling loss (y). The nonlinear refractive index (n2) of the phase modulator affects the center ring and reveals more interesting aspects. The simulation model is constructed, and the results obtained with the use of a combination of the Lumerical FDTD and MODE programs are presented. The photon is conceptually interpreted in terms of a wave packet and discussed for possible applications.

Future Challenges

Preecha Yupapin, Jalil Ali

Whispering gallery modes (WGMs) of waves in nature such as electromagnetic wave, sound wave, and matter wave have shown interesting results, which can be useful for fundamental studies and applications in optoelectronics and nanoelectronics, especially after the announcement of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physics for WGMs [1,2], where the authors confirmed that atoms can be trapped (stopped) by using WGMs in a microsphere. However, there are two more kinds of devices that can be used to trap light beams (atoms); the use of microcavity arrays performed by Yanik and Fan [3], and a nonlinear microring resonator by Yupapin and Pornsuwancharoen [4] for stopping light. Recently, Ang and Ngo [5] have also done experiments with slowing light in microresonators using a microring system. In this article, a new design of microring resonator device is proposed, which can be used to generate four forms of light simultaneously on a chip, whereas the storing and harvesting of trapped atoms/molecules can also be available. The proposed device is made up of silica and InGaAsP/InP with linear optical add-drop filter incorporating two nonlinear micro/nano rings on both sides of the center ring (modified add-drop filter). This particular configuration is known as a PANDA ring resonator [6] as shown in Figure 14.1. Light pulse, for instance, Gaussian, and bright and dark solitons are fed into the system through different ports such as an add port and through port. By using the practical device parameters, the simulation results are obtained using the Optiwave and MATLAB programs. Results obtained by both analytical and numerical methods show that many applications can be exploited. In application, when the practical device parameters are used, then such a device can be fabricated and implemented in the near future.

Coherent light squeezing states within a modified microring system

J. Ali, Nithiroth Pornsuwancharoen, Phichai Youplao +6 more

We have proposed the simple method of the squeezed light generation in the modified microring resonator, which is known as the microring conjugate mirror (MCM). When the monochromatic light is input into the MCM, the general form of the squeezed coherent states for a quantum harmonic oscillator can be generated by controlling the additional two side rings, which are the phase modulators. By using the graphical method called the Optiwave program, the coherent squeezed states of coherent light within an MCM can be obtained and interpreted as the amplitude, phase, quadrature and photon number-squeezed states. This method has shown potentials for microring related device design, which can be used before practical applications.

We propose a new system of an all optical switching system using an optical add/drop filter consisting of two nano ring resonators. The dynamic behavior of dark-bright soliton collision within the modified add/drop optical filter device, which it is known as PANDA ring resonator. By using the dark-bright soliton conversion control within the PANDA ring, the obtained output signals can be attenuated and used to perform the single photon switching, which is capable for security code application. Results obtained have shown that the random binary codes based on a single photon switching can be formed by using the polarized light components, dark and bright solitons, whereas the single photon switching codes can be obtained by using the attenuated dark-bright soliton conversion signals output signals.

OPTICAL BISTABILITY CONTROLLED USING ADD-DROP MOBIUS MICRORING RESONATOR SYSTEM

Ahmad Fakhrurrazi Ahmad Noorden, Suzairi Daud, Zuhaib Haider +2 more

The theoretical investigation has been performed on the implementation of optical Mobius shape in add-drop microring resonator. The modified add-drop Mobius configuration is used to investigate the optical bistability and the spectral transmission. The optical bright soliton pulse is used as the input source of the resonator system. The pulses propagation of the resonator system is modelled using the iterative programming based on the transfer matrix analysis equations. The enhancement of nonlinear effect of the resonator system is achieved by the add-drop Mobius resonator configuration. The system has been modelled for a variation of coupling coefficient for increase the bistable signal properties. The Add-drop Mobius MRR generated a bistable signal with 6.01 mW hysteresis width, and 9.47 mW output switch power with optimized radius of 5 µm outer and 4.5 m inner ring parts with 50 mW controlled power and input power. Mobius configuration is found as the better shape of resonator cavity that capable of optical switching application.

Linear and nonlinear behavior in single-ring resonators

Abdolkarim Afroozeh

This study has been focused on the linear and nonlinear behavior and investigative in single-ring resonator. Optical fiber ring resonators have great interest due to different applications, especially in communication, secured communication, slow light, fast light and light storage in optical buffers. There are many proposed applications of optical ring resonators. Optical fiber ring resonators can be readily constructed from standard optical fiber components, which allow their properties to be studied in a systematic manner. In this paper, we describe our studies of the optical transmission, intensity, shift phase and group delay characteristics of a family of such devices. In this case, Gaussian beam has been used as an input pulse inside to microring resonators. In this paper, transmission, intensity, shift phase and group delay characteristics of device have been investigated. It has been compared together in different coupling coefficients in frame of linear and nonlinear.

Optical tristability investigation in two coupled ring resonators

Santhad Pithakwongsaporn

The microring resonators have potential applications for the photonic integrated circuits. The dynamical phenomena of the two coupled microrings require a simple and efficient numerical formalism for solution of the system. We employ an analytical formula to calculate the optical tristability inside the two coupled microrings that takes into account Kerr nonlinearity and the effect of loss. We also compare the analytical results with the results from 3D finite-difference time-domain simulation. In addition, we show it is possible to obtain configurations which can tune the tristable region. This could be useful for designing optical logic applications.
