Low-energy excitations in helium-like dimer within an exact diagonalization approach

Abstract

The non-relativistic quantum-mechanical problem on bound states of four interacting spinless electrons moving in the Coulomb field of two attractive point centers with Z0=2 spaced at fixed distance R0 (4He2 dimer within Born–Oppenheimer–Heitler–London approximation) has been solved rigorously through exact diagonalization (expansion on truncated orthonormalized basis) method. The four-spin-conditioned relativistic corrections (of order ∼1/c2) to the ground state level of the dimer have been calculated with exact diagonalization on spin cluster, the spectrum and eigenvectors of the spin problem have been obtained. It is shown that pair spin coupling is antiferromagnetic with exchange constant of 12 K (it provides antisymmetry of the spin-singlet ground-state wave function for isolated 4He atom with two fermions coupled within the unitary spatially symmetric shell), but within four-electron shell of 4He2 dimer this fact yields the quintet ground state of the four-spin cluster totally antisymmetric relative to pair permutations. The exchange within the interatomic bond depends on the interatomic distance, so that there is a coupling between spin and phonon degrees of freedom which leads to renormalization of phonon spectrum in condensed phase as compared to the corresponding spinless medium. This effect can be interpreted as a direct analog of translation-rotation interaction in molecular cryocrystals.

Interatomic interaction within a 4He−4He dimer with mobile nuclei

Konstantin A. Chishko

Schrodinger equation for system of two mobile spinless nucleus with Z0 = 2 and four electrons (4He2-dimer) has been solved in the framework of exact diagonalization approach. The spectrum has been obtained with basis of 1134 functions built as direct product of one-particle hydrogen-like functions which are solutions of the exactly solved Sturm-Liouville problem. The asymptotic (Van der Waals) behavior of interaction between two 4He atoms in the limit R0→∞ has been analyzed and discussed. The contribution to the interaction energy from four electronic spins on the 4He–4He bond has been calculated the exact diagonalization procedure.

Artificial quantum-dot helium molecules: Electronic spectra, spin structures, and Heisenberg clusters

Ying Li, Constantine Yannouleas, Uzi Landman

Energy spectra and spin configurations of a system of $N=4$ electrons in lateral double quantum dots (quantum dot helium molecules) are investigated using exact diagonalization (EXD), as a function of interdot separation, applied magnetic field $(B)$, and strength of interelectron repulsion. As a function of the magnetic field, the energy spectra exhibit a low-energy band consisting of a group of six states, with the number six being a consequence of the conservation of the total spin and the ensuing spin degeneracies for four electrons. The energies of the six states appear to cross at a single value of the magnetic field, and with increasing Coulomb repulsion they tend to become degenerate, with a well-defined energy gap separating them from the higher-in-energy excited states. The appearance of the low-energy band is a consequence of the formation of a Wigner supermolecule, with the four electrons (two in each dot) being localized at the vertices of a rectangle. Using spin-resolved pair-correlation distributions, a method for mapping the complicated EXD many-body wave functions onto simpler spin functions associated with a system of four localized spins is introduced. Detailed interpretation of the EXD spin functions and EXD spectra associated with the low-energy band via a four-site Heisenberg cluster (with $B$-dependent exchange integrals) is demonstrated. Aspects of spin entanglement, referring to the well-known $N$-qubit Dicke states, are also discussed.

Dimer description of the SU(4) antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice

Anna Keselman, L. Savary, Leon Balents

In systems with many local degrees of freedom, high-symmetry points in the phase diagram can provide an important starting point for the investigation of their properties throughout the phase diagram. In systems with both spin and orbital (or valley) degrees of freedom such a starting point gives rise to SU(4)-symmetric models. Here we consider SU(4)-symmetric "spin'' models, corresponding to Mott phases at half-filling, i.e. the six-dimensional representation of SU(4). This may be relevant to twisted multilayer graphene. In particular, we study the SU(4) antiferromagnetic "Heisenberg'' model on the triangular lattice, both in the classical limit and in the quantum regime. Carrying out a numerical study using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), we argue that the ground state is non-magnetic. We then derive a dimer expansion of the SU(4) spin model. An exact diagonalization (ED) study of the effective dimer model suggests that the ground state breaks translation invariance, forming a valence bond solid (VBS) with a 12-site unit cell. Finally, we consider the effect of SU(4)-symmetry breaking interactions due to Hund's coupling, and argue for a possible phase transition between a VBS and a magnetically ordered state.

Potential energy surfaces in atomic structure: The role of Coulomb correlation in the ground state of helium

Laura D. Salas, J. C. Arce

For the $S$ states of two-electron atoms, we introduce an exact and unique factorization of the internal eigenfunction in terms of a marginal amplitude, which depends functionally on the electron-nucleus distances ${r}_{1}$ and ${r}_{2}$, and a conditional amplitude, which depends functionally on the interelectronic distance ${r}_{12}$ and parametrically on ${r}_{1}$ and ${r}_{2}$. Applying the variational principle, we derive pseudoeigenvalue equations for these two amplitudes, which cast the internal Schr\"odinger equation in a form akin to the Born-Oppenheimer separation of nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom in molecules. The marginal equation involves an effective radial Hamiltonian, which contains a nonadiabatic potential energy surface that takes into account all interparticle correlations in an averaged way, and whose unique eigenvalue is the internal energy. At each point $({r}_{1},{r}_{2})$, such surface is, in turn, the unique eigenvalue in the conditional equation. Employing the ground state of He as prototype, we show that the nonadiabatic potential energy surface affords a molecularlike interpretation of the structure of the atom, and aids in the analysis of energetic and spatial aspects of the Coulomb correlation, in particular correlation-induced symmetry breaking and quantum phase transition.

Phase diagram of one-dimensional electron-phonon systems. II. The molecular-crystal model

J. E. Hirsch, Eduardo Fradkin

We study the nature of the ground state of a one-dimensional electron-phonon model for molecular crystals: The phonons are assumed dispersionless and couple to the local electronic density. We consider the half-filled-band sector and discuss the stability of the Peierls-dimerized ground state as a function of the phonon frequency ($\ensuremath{\omega}$), electron-phonon coupling constant ($\ensuremath{\lambda}$), and number of components of the electron spin ($n$). First, we discuss the properties of the model in the limiting cases of zero frequency and infinite frequency. We then perform a strong coupling expansion which maps the system onto a spinless fermion model with nearest-neighbor repulsion for both spinless and spin-\textonehalf{} electrons, but with different parameters in both cases. Finally, we perform a numerical study of the system using a Monte Carlo technique. We study the behavior of the order parameter and of correlation functions for various points in parameter space. We also perform a finite-size---scaling analysis of the numerical data. The conclusions of our study are the following: For the case of spinless electrons, there exists always a disordered phase for small coupling constant, and the system undergoes an infinite-order transition to a Peierls-dimerized state as the coupling constant increases beyond a critical value. The phase diagram is divided between a disordered and an ordered region by a line that connects the points ($\ensuremath{\omega}=0$, $\ensuremath{\lambda}=0$) and ($\ensuremath{\omega}=\ensuremath{\infty}$, $\ensuremath{\lambda}=\ensuremath{\infty}$). For the case of spin-\textonehalf{} electrons, the system is dimerized for arbitrary $\ensuremath{\lambda}$ and $\ensuremath{\omega}$ except in the limit $\ensuremath{\omega}=\ensuremath{\infty}$.

Quantum phase diagram of ferromagnetically coupled singlet dimers on a distorted Shastry-Sutherland lattice

Monalisa Chatterjee, Santanu Pal, Manjit Kumar

Frustrated spin-1/2 model with all-antiferromagnetic exchange on Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) has been extensively explored, and in this work we study the quantum phase diagram of isotropic Heisenberg spin- 1 / 2 model on the SSL with ferromagnetic exchange interactions along leg, and antiferromagnetic couplings along the diagonal bonds ( J ). Using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and exact diagonalization calculations, we identify four distinct ground-state (gs) phases for this frustrated spin-1/2 model: stripe ( π , 0 ) , stripe ( 0 , π ) , ferromagnetic, and spiral-dimer phases. In the spiral-dimer phase the gs can exhibit dimer formation along the diagonal bonds with or without spins spiral along the x axis or y axis in different parameter regime and these states are connected through crossovers. There is a continuous transition between stripe with a long-range spin-spin correlations and spiral-dimer phase with a short-range correlations. An effective spin parameter is introduced to accurately determine the phase boundaries. Our DMRG results differ significantly from previous Schwinger boson mean-field theory predictions. The spiral phase occurs in a narrow range of the parameter space and shows short-range correlations in the system.
