Abstract

The single photon scattering in one-dimensional waveguide coupled to two separated atoms is investigated. The first atom is considered as a Λ system and the second one is taken as V -type configuration. The analytical expressions of the single photon scattering spectra are obtained. The calculated results show that the polarization conversion of single photon can be realized by controlling the distance between the two atoms due to the interference effects. The conversion efficiency can reach unit in the ideal case. Furthermore, the polarization conversion of the single photon also depends on the initial state of the Λ system. The influences of dissipations on the single photon polarization conversion are also shown.

Polarization Conversion of Single Photon via Scattering by a Λ System in a Semi-Infinite Waveguide*

Fu-Qiang Yu, Mu-Tian Cheng, Shaoming Li +3 more

We theoretically investigate single-photon polarization conversion via scattering by an atom with Λ configuration coupled to a semi-infinite waveguide and discuss the two cases in which the Λ system is non-degenerated and degenerated. By applying the hard-wall boundary condition of the semi-infinite waveguide, it is found that single-photon polarization conversion can be realized with unit probability for both cases under the ideal condition. Together with the polarization conversion, the frequency conversion of a single photon can also be realized with unit probability in the ideal case if the Λ system is not degenerated.

Single-photon scattering on Λ -type three-level atoms in a one-dimensional waveguide

T. S. Tsoi, C. K. Law

We investigate the quantum scattering involving a single photon and a chain of $N$ polarized $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$-type three-level atoms inside a one-dimensional waveguide. By using a transfer matrix method, we obtain analytic expressions of eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian, which determine the polarization dependent transmission and reflection spectra for a single photon. We show that the scattering is most significant when the interatomic distance equals an integer multiple plus a quarter of the resonance wavelength. In such a configuration, an incident photon with an unknown polarization can be converted into a specified polarization with a transmission probability higher than that in polarizers obeying Malus's law.

Efficient single-photon frequency conversion via a giant three-level atom

Jin-Song 劲松 Huang 黄, Xiang-Lin Hu

Abstract The single-photon frequency conversion in a one-dimensional waveguide coupled to a giant three-level atom is investigated. The analytical expressions of the single-photon scattering spectra are derived via the real-space Hamiltonian. Numerical results show that high-efficiency frequency conversion of single photons can be achieved by controlling the atom-waveguide coupling due to the phase-dependent interference effect of the multiple point couplings of the giant atom, and the conversion efficiency can ideally reach unity. The conversion spectra in both the Markovian and non-Markovian regimes show that multiple staggered peaks and dips emerge due to the non-Markovian retardation effect, in contrast to a single peak and dip in the Markovian regime. The influence of dissipation on the fidelity of frequency conversion is also displayed, and it shows that the fidelity is not sensitive to dissipation.

Tunable single-photon frequency converter in a waveguide with a giant V-type atom

Hongzheng Wu, Ge Sun, Jing Lu +1 more

We study the single-photon scattering in a one-dimensional (1D) waveguide coupled to one transition of a $V$-type giant atom (GA), whose other transition is coherently driven by an classical field. The inelastic scattering of single photons by the GA realizes the single-photon frequency conversion. By applying the Lippmann-Schwinger equation, the scattering coefficients for single photons incident from different directions are obtained, which present different scattering spectra in the Markovian and the non-Markovian regimes. The conversion contrast characterizing the nonreciprocity is also analyzed in both regimes. It is found that the probability of the frequency up- or down-conversion vanishes as long as the emission from either transition pathways for single photons is suppressed, but it is enhanced and even reach unity by introducing the nonreciprocity. It is the quantum self-interference induced by the scale of this two-legged GA and the phase difference between the GA-waveguide couplings that tune the probability of the frequency up- or down-conversion.

Resonator mediated controlling single photon transport in one-dimensional waveguide coupling to a giant atom

Guoqing Cai, Yunning Lu, Zhao Liu +2 more

We theoretically investigate coherent controlling single photon transport in one-dimensional waveguide coupled to a giant atom interacting with a resonator. The giant atom is considered as a Λ-type system. One transition of the atom couples to the waveguide and the other one is driven by the resonator. Single photon scattering amplitudes are calculated for three kinds of coupling schematics, respectively. Both the analytical and numerical results show that single photon scattering properties can be manipulated by adjusting the size of the giant atom, the coupling strengths of the waveguide-resonator and resonator-giant atom. Specifically, the transmission spectra exhibit two Rabi-splitting dips and the locations of the dips are strongly dependent on the size of the giant atom (GA). It also shows that the resonant single photon can be tuned from being transmitted to being reflected by controlling the coupling strength. Our results may find applications in designing quantum devices based on giant atom at single-photon level.

Single-photon Transport in a Waveguide-cavity-emitter System

Xue-jian Sun, WenXiao Liu, Hao Chen +3 more

Abstract We investigate the single-photon transport properties in a hybrid waveguide quantum electrodynamics system, in which a one-dimensional waveguide is simultaneously coupled to a cavity and a driven Λ-type three-level atom. The cavity and the atom are also coupled to each other. We show that when the waveguide is coupled to the cavity and the atom at the same point, double electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) can be observed from the system. The physical mechanism of the double EIT effect has been given by setting up the eigenstate structure for the whole system. When the waveguide is coupled to the cavity and the atom at different points, we demonstrate that the single-photon transmission spectra can be effectively controlled by adjusting the relative separation between the cavity and the atom. Moreover, this non-zero relative separation can lead to the occurrence of the controllable nonreciprocal scattering effect. These results have potential applications in realization of photonic coherent control.
