Abstract

This paper proposes an secure transmit power allocation (STPA) scheme for a two-way denoise-and-forward (DNF) relaying network with the aim of maximizing the secrecy sum rate of the network. Here, the DNF relay could act not only as a forwarder but also a potential eavesdropper, i.e., an untrusted relay. First, the secure-rate-region of the two sources that their messages can be strictly kept secret is derived from an information theory point of view. On this basis, an optimal power allocation problem subject to an individual peak-power limit is studied, giving closed-form expressions of the individual transmit powers than can maximize the network secrecy sum rate. Computer simulation results show that compared with the conventional equal-power allocation scheme, the proposed STPA scheme is capable of enhancing the secrecy sum rate and reducing the intercept probability simultaneously.

Secure Beamforming for MIMO Two-Way Communications With an Untrusted Relay

Jianhua Mo, Meixia Tao, Yuan Liu +1 more

This paper studies the secure beamforming design in a multiple-antenna three-node system where two source nodes exchange messages with the help of an untrusted relay node. The relay acts as both an essential signal forwarder and a potential eavesdropper. Both two-phase and three-phase two-way relay strategies are considered. Our goal is to jointly optimize the source and relay beamformers for maximizing the secrecy sum rate of the two-way communications. We first derive the optimal relay beamformer structures. Then, iterative algorithms are proposed to find source and relay beamformers jointly based on alternating optimization. Furthermore, we conduct asymptotic analysis on the maximum secrecy sum-rate. Our analysis shows that when all transmit powers approach infinity, the two-phase two-way relay scheme achieves the maximum secrecy sum rate if the source beamformers are designed such that the received signals at the relay align in the same direction. This reveals an important advantage of signal alignment technique in against eavesdropping. It is also shown that if the source powers approach zero, the three-phase scheme performs the best while the two-phase scheme is even worse than direct transmission. Simulation results have verified the efficiency of the proposed secure beamforming algorithms as well as the analytical findings.

Optimal Power Allocation for Physical Layer Security in Multi-Hop DF Relay Networks

Jong-Ho Lee

In this paper, we consider secure communications of one source-destination pair in wireless multi-hop decode-and-forward (DF) relay networks. In the presence of an eavesdropper, we derive an optimal power allocation strategy to maximize achievable secrecy rates under an overall transmit power constraint assuming that a single relay is located at each individual hop. We demonstrate that the optimal power allocation is obtained when the overall power constraint and the DF-relaying constraints necessary to guarantee that each DF relay correctly decodes the information signals hold with equality, which rely on channel conditions between the source, relays, and destination. The channel conditions for the eavesdropper are shown to only influence relays that may be inactive for secrecy rate maximization. We also consider multiple cooperative relays at each hop to perform cooperative beamforming in the presence of multiple eavesdroppers. To improve the secrecy rate in multi-hop relay networks, which include more than two hops, we propose an iterative cooperative beamformer design and transmit power allocation scheme with relay selection. Numerical results are presented to investigate the secrecy capacity obtained by the optimal power allocation in multi-hop DF relay networks and to confirm the secrecy rate enhancement of the proposed cooperative beamforming scheme.

Secure beamforming for MIMO two-way transmission with an untrusted relay

Jianhua Mo, Meixia Tao, Yuan Liu +2 more

From security perspective, a friendly relay may help to keep the confidential messages from being eavesdropped, while an untrusted relay may intentionally eavesdrop the messages when relaying. This paper studies the secure beamforming for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) two-way communications, where two source nodes exchange information with the help of an untrusted relay node. The relay adopts amplify-and-forward (AF) strategy and acts as both an essential helper and a potential eavesdropper. Our goal is to maximize the secrecy sum rate of the bidirectional links by jointly optimizing the source and relay beamformers. For the two-phase two-way relay scheme, we first derive the optimal structure of the relay beamformer and then propose an iterative algorithm to jointly optimize the source and relay beamformers. Then, a comprehensive study on the asymptotical performance is conducted by letting the source and relay powers approach zero or infinity. In particular, we show that when all powers approach infinity, the two-way relay scheme achieves the maximum secrecy rate if the transceiver beamformers are designed such that the received signals at the relay can be aligned to be parallel.

Optimal Power Allocation for Secure Multicarrier Relay Systems

Cheol Jeong, Il‐Min Kim

We study power allocation for secrecy rate maximization in a multicarrier decode-and-forward relay system, where an eavesdropper exists. We consider three transmission modes: in no communication, the source and the relay do not transmit at all; in direct communication, the source broadcasts signals during the first time slot and the relay does not forward any signal during the second time slot; in relay communication, the source broadcasts signals during the first time slot and the relay forwards the reencoded signals to the destination during the second time slot. Determining the transmission strategy adaptively on each subcarrier, the optimal source power and the optimal relay power over all subcarriers are derived to maximize the sum secrecy rate under a total system power constraint. In addition, a suboptimal power allocation scheme is proposed to substantially reduce the computational complexity. It is shown that the proposed suboptimal solution is asymptotically optimal in the limit as the number of subcarriers goes to infinity. Extensive numerical results are presented for various scenarios. In particular, the performance of the suboptimal scheme is very close to that of the optimal scheme even if the number of subcarriers is moderately small.

Secure Beamforming for Full-Duplex MIMO Two-Way Communication via Untrusted Relaying

Shuangrui Zhao, Jia Liu, Xiaochen Li +2 more

Full-duplex (FD) technique is very promising to support enormous data for 5G networks since it can greatly improve the spectrum efficiency. However, the secrecy performance of FD communication systems still remains largely unknown. As an initial step towards this end, this paper studies the physical layer security-based beamforming design in a FD two-way amplify-and-forward relay system, where two source nodes exchange messages with the assistance of an untrusted relay. The untrusted relay is willing to forward the messages and may also work as an eavesdropper to intercept the confidential messages. Our objective is to optimize the source and relay beamformers for maximizing the secrecy sum rate of the two-way communications with imperfect self-interference cancellation. For a specific system configuration, we first derive the expression of secrecy sum rate. By utilizing signal alignment technique and gradient method, we then propose two iterative algorithms to find the optimal source and relay beamforming matrices, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that when the number of antennas at the relay is appropriate and the interference-to-noise ratio is in a low region the proposed FD scheme significantly improves the secrecy sum rate over conventional schemes.

Joint Power Allocation and Relay Selection Scheme in Multiple Untrusted Relay Networks

Wanying Su, Rugui Yao, Ye Fan +3 more

Untrusted relays might decode the information while forwarding it and lead to threaten the security of the system in some realistic scenarios. The aim of the paper is to maximize the secrecy performance, and therefore on the ground of the cooperative jamming, we propose a novel power allocation-relay selection program in a multi-untrusted relay network where numerous antennas are equipped in the source and the destination simultaneously. Besides, we allow an optimal application of the power allocation factor and the proper selection of the relays, which makes the Ergodic Secrecy Rate (ESR) increased directly. Moreover, the closed-form expressions of the ESR in different scenarios to measure the secrecy performance are acquired. It can be known that the simulation results of the ESR are compliant with the theoretical, especially when Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) is low. Apart from this, the ESR in theoretical values are tested to be approximately equal to the simulation. Compared to other relay selection strategies like partial selection strategy and the Max-Min (MM) selection strategy, the scheme proposed here can get the secrecy performance strengthen better.
