Psychophysical Interpretation and Conscious Observation in Quantum Field Theory

Abstract

Appealing to subject-object duality, we investigate using psychophysical parallelism, the problem of Consciousness in relation to Quantum Field Theory to look for avenues for a consciousness-based unification of Quantum Theory with Special Relativity, and therefore, of all scientific knowledge of the observed physical universe. The implications of such an approach for most of the outstanding unsolved problems in Physics are briefly discussed and several possible objections to the Psychophysical interpretations are addressed.

Psychophysical Interpretation of Quantum theory

Rajat Kumar Pradhan

It is shown that the formalism of quantum theory naturally incorporates the psychophysical parallelism and thereby interprets itself, if the subjective aspects are taken as equal partners alongside the objective aspects as determinants of Reality as a Whole. The inevitable interplay of the subject (observer) and the object (observed) in making up Reality is brought out succinctly through a comprehensive psychophysical interpretation which includes in its bosom the truths of many of the major interpretations proposed so far as essential ingredients. At the heart of this novel approach lies the interpretation of the complex conjugate quantities such as the conjugate wave function Ψ*(r, t), the bra vector , and the observable A etc. respectively. This brings out the psycho-physical parallelism lying hidden in the quantum mechanical formalism in a quite straightforward manner. The measurement process is shown to be a two-step process comprising objective interaction through the retarded waves and subjective observation leading to rise of knowledge through the advanced waves.

Quantum mechanics, objective reality, and the problem of consciousness

Ranjan Mukhopadhyay

The hard problem in consciousness is the problem of understanding how physical processes in the brain could give rise to subjective conscious experience. In this paper, I suggest that in order to understand the relationship between consciousness and the physical world, we need to probe deeply into the nature of physical reality. This leads us to quantum physics and to a second explanatory gap: that between quantum and classical reality. I will seek a philosophical framework that can address these two gaps simultaneously. Our analysis of quantum mechanics will naturally lead us to the notion of a hidden reality and to the postulate that consciousness is an integral component of this reality. The framework proposed in the paper provides the philosophical underpinnings for a theory of consciousness while satisfactorily resolving the interpretation problem in quantum mechanics without the need to alter its mathematical structure. I also discuss some implications for a scientific theory of consciousness.

Concept of consciousness in the context of quantum mechanics

Михаил Борисович Менский

Conceptual problems of the quantum theory of measurement are considered, which are embodied in well-known paradoxes and in Bell's inequalities. Arguments are advanced in favor of the viewpoint that these problems may hardly be solved without direct inclusion of the observer's consciousness in the theoretical description of a quantum measurement. Discussed in this connection is the so-called many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics proposed by Everett, as is the extension of Everett's concept, which consists in the assumption that separating the quantum state components corresponding to alternative measurements is not only associated with the observer's consciousness but is completely identified with it. This approach is shown to open up qualitatively new avenues for the unification of physics and psychology and, more broadly, of the sciences and the humanities. This may lead to an extension of the theory of consciousness and shed light on significant and previously misunderstood phenomena in the sphere of consciousness.

Quantum Theory of Consciousness

Gangsha Zhi, Rulin Xiu

Both consciousness and quantum phenomenon are subjective and indeterministic. In this paper, we propose consciousness is a quantum phenomenon. A quantum theory of consciousness (QTOC) is presented based on a new interpretation of quantum physics. We show that this QTOC can address the mind and body problem, the hard problem of consciousness. It also provides a physics foundation and mathematical formulation to study consciousness and neural network. We demonstrate how to apply it to develop and extend various models of consciousness. We show the predictions from this theory about the existence of a universal quantum vibrational field and the large-scale, nearly instantaneous synchrony of brainwaves among different parts of brain, body, people, and objects. The correlation between Schumann Resonances and some brainwaves is explained. Recent progress in quantum information theory, especially regarding quantum entanglement and quantum error correction code, is applied to study memory and shed new light in neuroscience.

The Problem of Conscious Observation in Relativistic Description

Rajat Kumar Pradhan

The role of the conscious observer in Relativity theory is investigated with a view to unifying it with quantum theory on the basis of consciousness. It is argued that contrary to popular belief, the relativistic observer is not merely the reference frame i.e. the scaffolding of meter-sticks and clocks, but is also conscious. This fact has remained hidden for long since classical measurements have been taken to end with the interaction of the system with the apparata, whether any conscious observer subsequently reads the resulting pointer state of the apparata or not. However, Quantum theory demands that the measurement process be carried to its logical conclusion by the observation of the results and this must also be described by the theory. The aim in this article is to scrutinize the role of the conscious observer hidden in relativity theory so that a new basis for unification of quantum theory with relativity emerges from it. Generalized definitions in Relativity are provided and the eight specific bases of relativity, four each for the objective and the subjective categories, are delineated.
