RESONANT RADIATION OF ATOM IN SGUEEZED LIGHT FIELD

Abstract

In the paper, applying the stochastic statistical methods, we obtain the resonant radiation spectrum of a two-level atom ensemble driven by multimode squeezed light. Co-responding to different squeezing degrees of the quantum fluctuations of the driving field, the central peak of radiation spectrum exhibits subnatural-and supernatural-linewidth phenomenon, and in all cases the side peaks are broadened. The positions of the side peaks and the character of symmetry of radiation spectrum depend upon the coherent excitation direction and the squeezing direction of the driving field.

ATOMIC ABSORPTION AND DISPERSION IN SQUEEZED LIGHT FIELD

Weiping Zhang, TAN WEI-HAN, 中国科学院上海光学精密机械研究所

In this paper, the optical Bloch equations of a two-level atom ensemble driven by squeezed light field are derived. Based on these equations, we calculate the atomic absorption and dispersion. The results show that for different squeezing conditions of the field fluctuations, atomic absorption-lineshape exhibits sub-or super-natural linewidth phenomenon. Atomic dispersion depends on the squeezing direction and coherent excitation direction of the driving field. When these two directions are not parallel or perpendicular to each other, the dispersion zero-point shows a shift to the transition frequency of the atom.

Resonance fluorescence in a squeezed thermal vacuum

Ho Trung Dung, Nguyễn Quốc Khánh

Atom radiation in a squeezed thermal reservoir is studied. We show that, as in the case of a squeezed vacuum reservoir, the two quadratures of the atomic polarization are damped at different rates. When the atom is driven by a coherent field, we find that the steady-state polarization depends on the relative phase of the squeezing and the driving field. However, this phase dependence becomes less pronounced when the number of thermal photons increases. The fluorescent spectrum is calculated in the strong-driving-field limit by employing the secular approximation. Properties of the spectrum and the possibility of a subnatural linewidth are investigated.

Resonance Fluorescence in a Squeezed Vacuum

H. J. Carmichael, Alistair S. Lane, Daniel F. Walls

Fluorescence from a coherently driven two-level atom that is damped by a squeezed vacuum is studied. We show that the mean atomic polarization depends on the relative phases of the squeezed vacuum and the coherent driving field. The fluorescent spectrum is calculated and shows several modifications over the spectrum for normal resonance fluorescence. In particular, the central peak of the Mollow triplet has a linewidth that depends on the phase of the driving field. For strong squeezing this peak can either be much narrower or much broader than the natural linewidth of the atom.

Resonance fluorescence from an atom in a squeezed vacuum

H. J. Carmichael, Alistair S. Lane, Daniel F. Walls

The fluorescent spectrum for a two-level atom which is damped by a squeezed vacuum shows striking differences from the spectrum for ordinary resonance fluorescence. For strong coherent driving fields the Mollow triplet depends on the relative phase of the driving field and the squeezed vacuum field. The central peak may have either subnatural linewidth or supernatural linewidth depending on this phase. The mean atomic polarization also shows a phase sensitivity.

Subnatural linewidth averaging for coupled atomic and cavity-mode oscillators

H. J. Carmichael, Robert J. Brecha, Mark G. Raizen +2 more

We calculate the spontaneous-emission spectrum and the spectrum of weakly driven fluorescence for a two-level atom coupled to a resonant-cavity mode. For strong atom-cavity coupling the spectra split into two peaks that can have subnatural linewidths. If the cavity linewidth is negligible, the spontaneous-emission spectrum has half the radiative linewidth of the atom; the spectrum of weakly driven fluorescence shows an additional 36% squeezing-induced narrowing. These effects can be observed using coupled-field and collective-polarization oscillators excited in a cavity containing N two-level atoms.

Systems driven by colored squeezed noise: The atomic absorption spectrum

Helmut Ritsch, P. Zoller

We derive stochastic density-matrix equations for an atom strongly driven by finite-bandwidth squeezed light. The quantum properties of the light are accounted for by a doubling of dimensions of the stochastic process for c-number electric field amplitudes. Saturation properties and the weak-field absorption spectrum of a two-level atom embedded in finite-bandwidth squeezed light and driven by a coherent field are calculated. We discuss the effect of finite bandwidth of the squeezed light in obtaining subnatural linewidth in the atomic absorption spectra, based on nonperturbative solutions of the stochastic optical Bloch equations.
