Abstract

We propose a scheme to generate polarized hybrid entanglement in the form of $|H\ensuremath{\rangle}|\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\rangle}+|V\ensuremath{\rangle}|\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\rangle}$ by interference between a superposition of coherent states and a polarization entangled photon pair. In the scheme two sets of interferences with perpendicular polarizations are designed to erase ``which path'' information. The joint output fields of the two sets of interferences are used to herald the generation of the polarized hybrid entanglement. The advantage of the protocol is its experimental feasibility since it not only realizes effective interference but also retains the polarization information in the output fields of interferences. We also analyze the effect of imperfect experimental conditions on the generated hybrid state, including inefficiency on-off single-photon detectors with dark counts and available approximate resource states. The theoretical analysis shows that the fidelity of the heralded hybrid state with small amplitude can be maintained at a high level under actual experimental conditions.

Generation of hybrid entanglement between a single-photon polarization qubit and a coherent state

Hyukjoon Kwon, Hyunseok Jeong

We propose a scheme to generate entanglement between a single-photon qubit in the polarization basis and a coherent state of light. The required resources are a superposition of coherent states, a polarization entangled photon pair, beam splitters, the displacement operation, and four photodetectors. Even when realistic detectors with a limited efficiency are used, an arbitrarily high fidelity can be obtained by adjusting a beam-splitter ratio and the displacement amplitude at the price of reducing the success probability. Our analysis shows that high fidelities may be obtained using on-off detectors with low efficiencies and available resource states under current technology.

Polarization-entangled photon pairs generation via interference of nonorthogonal quantum states

Dmitry N. Frolovtsev, Sergey A Magnitskiy

We report a new method for generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs in maximally entangled polarization states. Our approach is based on quantum interference between two polarization states which are non-orthogonal. We present necessary and sufficient conditions for generation the photon pair in a maximally entangled state. The effect of dependence of entanglement on the phase between the interfering states of photons is investigated theoretically and demonstrated experimentally with quantum states produced via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in the double-crystal scheme.

Hybrid entanglement and a non-local quantum eraser

Xiao‐Song Ma, A. Qarry, Johannes Kofler +2 more

We demonstrate for the first time hybrid entanglement of photon pairs generated via the experimental violation of a Bell inequality with two different degrees of freedom (DOF), namely the path/linear momentum of one photon and the polarization of the other photon. Polarization entangled photon pairs are created by Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion. Then, a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer is used to convert the polarization DOF of one photon to a path DOF. For that photon, path superposition is analyzed and polarization superposition for its twin photon.

Entangling two distant atoms by interference of polarized photons

Xun‐Li Feng, Shangqing Gong, Zhizhan Xu

A scheme to generate the entanglement between two distant atoms by the interference of polarized photons is proposed. The model consists of two identical /spl Lambda/-type three-level atoms trapped in two distant optical cavities respectively. Each atom has a excited state |e> and two degenerate ground states |g/sub L/> and |g/sub R/>. The scheme is based on the interference effect where the coherent superposition of atomic states is generated in photon emission process. The scheme gives several advantages: (i) both atoms are excited simultaneously; (ii) the driving condition does not influence the fidelity of the final entangled states; and (iii) the influence of atomic recoil on the entanglement fidelity could be eliminated.

Conditional preparation of maximal polarization entanglement

Cezary Śliwa, Konrad Banaszek

A simple experimental setup consisting of a spontaneous parametric down-conversion source and passive linear optics is proposed for conditional preparation of a maximally entangled polarization state of two photons. Successful preparation is unambiguously heralded by coincident detection of four auxiliary photons. The proposed scheme utilizes the down-conversion term corresponding to the generation of three pairs of photons. We analyze imperfect detection of the auxiliary photons and demonstrate that its deleterious effect on the fidelity of the prepared state can be suppressed at the cost of decreasing the efficiency of the scheme.

Heralded hybrid CV-DV entanglement generation by quantum interference between CV state and DV delocalized photon

Sergey A. Podoshvedov, Nguyen Ba An

Hybrid entangled states prove to be necessary for quantum information processing within heterogeneous quantum networks. A method with irreducible number of consumed resources that firmly provides hybrid CV-DV entanglement for any input conditions of the experimental setup is proposed. Namely, a family of CV states is introduced. Each of such CV states is first superimposed on a beam-splitter with a delocalized photon and then detected by a photo-detector behind the beam-splitter. Detection of any photon number heralds generation of a hybrid CV-DV entangled state in the outputs, independent of transmission/reflection coefficients of the beam-splitter and size of the input CV state. Nonclassical properties of the generated state are studied and their entanglement degree in terms of negativity is calculated. There are wide domains of values of input parameters of the experimental setup that can be chosen to make the generated state maximally entangled. The proposed method is also applicable to truncated versions of the input CV states. We also propose a simple method to produce even/odd CV states.
