Abstract

In this paper, optical communication at the single-photon level is experimentally demonstrated by using a multi-channel frequency coding scheme in which the information is decoded by using the single-photons modulation spectrum. By using the modulation spectrum, the coding scheme could work normally in a channel with high loss and noise. Besides, multiple modulation frequency components could be used in a wide bandwidth regardless of frequency aliasing; therefore, the multi-channel frequency coding scheme makes it possible for high-capacity single-photons communication.

Enhanced transmission capacity for laser communication at the single-photon level using the multi-channel frequency coding scheme

Jianyong Hu, Bo Yu, Mingyong Jing +2 more

The statistical properties of a radiation sources are commonly characterized by second-order-correlation or Mandel parameter. Our research found that the single photons modulation spectrum provides us another optional way which is more sensitive to the high frequency information contained in the photon sequence. In this paper, we present direct laser communication by using a multi-channel frequency coding scheme based on the single photons modulation spectrum in which the multi-frequency modulation makes the transmission capacity efficiently enhanced. The modulation frequencies could be operated in a wide band without frequency aliasing due to the inherent randomness of photons arrival time of weak coherent light. The error rate less than 10-5 has been achieved experimentally when the mean signal photon count is 80 kcps. The modulated coherent light field shows nonlinear effects of single photons modulation spectrum. The studies of statistical properties of the single photons modulation spectrum, including the dependence of mean noise photon count, integration time, channel spacing and the number of frequency component, helped us to optimize the error rate and transmission capacity.

Single-Photon Fourier Transform

Zhen Yang, Zeng‐Quan Yan, Li Wang +3 more

The extraction of information carried by light plays an increasingly important role in optical communication, imaging, and detection. However, the information can only be successfully extracted when the light pulse is comparably strong, leaving untouched scenarios where survived photons are extremely sparse. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a single-photon Fourier transform scheme. By retrieving the implicit correlation shared in the sparse singlephoton stream globally, we are able to precisely classify each photon and synchronously extract multiple ultra-weak signals with high fidelity against extreme environments. Our experiment results give a full picture of the scheme in terms of multi-terminal expandability, wide frequency adaptability, 125 dB loss tolerance, and -10.4 dB signal-to-noise ratio robustness. Even when the pulse repetition frequencies of all terminals are the same, we can still recognize the free-running clock drift and separate different messages. Our work can be a general scheme to extend the capability boundary for all the extremely low-light-flux scenarios, and makes many challenging tasks possible, such as in-orbit optical communication network with complex topology, navigation in extremely lossy and noisy environments, and wide-range single-photon imaging with multi-source illumination.

Frequency coded quantum key distribution channel based on photon amplitude-phase modulation

Ildaris M. Gabdulkhakov, Oleg G. Morozov

The technology of frequency coding in channels of quantum key distribution allows to determine the ground state of photons through the value of the amplitude of its carrier, frequency modulated in phase (PM) or amplitude (AM) by a radio-frequency signal, and the resulting side components. Over the past twenty years, it has been substantially modified and improved. At the same time, in recent works, an expanded understanding of the frequency coding principle is used, in which each photon state is associated not with the phase of the modulating signal at a certain frequency, but with one or more sideband frequencies or the carrier frequency of the photon itself. The known schemes of electro-optical modulation and remodulation are described by the symmetric pairs PM-PM, AM-AM and AM-PM (PM-AM), where the first component determines the modulator type on the Alice side (legal subscriber - transmitter), and the second one on the side of Bob legal subscriber - receiver). It is noted, that the smallest value of QBER is achieved in schemes with a passive definition of one or two basic states of a photon, i.e. without the use of remodulation processes. The formation of a filter system is carried out using fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) or arrayed waveguide gratings (AWG), tuned to the photon carrier or it sideband components. In this paper, we present the results of constructing a universal system of quantum key distribution (QKD) based on the electro-optical AMPM-PMAM scheme, which makes it possible to realize all the above-mentioned schemes and additionally combined version. At the heart of the AMPMPMAM system of the QKD system is the modulation transformation of the photon carrier based on the Il'inMorozov's method and its one- and two-modulator realizations. For the mathematical description of the scheme, the principles of constructing a single-port modulation microwave photonic link of a sequential type and photon modeling of electro-optical modulators were used. The use of the universal scheme will allow using several levels of cryptographic protection, including switching schemes and protocols, with remodulation and only passive detection. In addition, it should be noted the high spectral efficiency of the Il'in-Morozov's modulation conversion, its spectral purity and the stability of the received characteristics of the output radiation when the conversion parameters deviate from the optimal ones. The possibility of reducing the probability of achieving a positive result in PNS attacks by Eva (illegal subscriber) is shown by eliminating the carrier of the signal transmitted via the quantum channel from the structure of the key distribution.

Nonorthogonal coding in spectrally-entangled photons

N-Y Tsai, H. H. Jen

Abstract Controlling and engineering continuous spectral modes of entangled photons represents one of the promising approaches toward secure quantum communications. By using the telecom bandwidth generated from a cascade-emitted biphoton in atomic ensembles, a fiber-based long-distance quantum communication can be feasible owing to its low transmission loss. With multiplexed photon pairs, we propose to implement a nonorthogonal coding scheme in their spectral modes and present an architecture of multiple channels enabling a high-capacity transfer of codewords. Using the measures of the second-order correlations and associated visibility and contrast, we further quantify the performance of the proposed nonorthogonal coding scheme. Our results demonstrate the capability to encode and decode quantum information beyond the orthogonal coding scheme, and in particular, the multi-channel setup manifests a resilience and an advantage in a design with multiple channel errors. The proposed scheme here can be applicable to a large-scale and multiuser quantum communication and pave the way toward an efficient and functional quantum information processing.

Demonstration of Channel Multiplexing Quantum Communication Exploiting Entangled Sideband Modes

Shaoping Shi, Long Tian, Yajun Wang +3 more

Channel multiplexing quantum communication based on exploiting continuous-variable entanglement of optical modes offers great potential to enhance channel capacity and save quantum resource. Here, we present a frequency-comb-type control scheme for simultaneously extracting a lot of entangled sideband modes with arbitrary frequency detuning from a squeezed state of light. We experimentally demonstrate fourfold channel multiplexing quantum dense coding communication by exploiting the extracted four pairs of entangled sideband modes. Due to high entanglement and wide frequency separation between each entangled pairs, these quantum channels have large channel capacity and the cross talking effect can be avoided. The achieved channel capacities have surpassed that of all classical and quantum communication under the same bandwidth published so far. The presented scheme can be extended to more channels if more entangled sideband modes are extracted.
