Adiabatic passage on high-order multiphoton transitions

George N. Gibson

Coherent interactions between light fields and simple quantum systems, such as $\ensuremath{\pi}$-pulses and adiabatic passage through frequency chirps and stimulated Raman interactions, generally use one- or two-photon processes. This limits the use of such interactions to energy scales close to the photon energy of the control field. However, recent calculations have shown that a 3-level system, generic to ionized diatomic molecules, shows such a strong multiphoton coupling that $\ensuremath{\pi}$-pulses are possible on at least 12-photon transitions. In this paper, we show that adiabatic transfer of population is also possible on such high-order multiphoton transitions. Full one-dimensional quantum mechanical two-electron calculations confirm this effect even in a system with many excited states and an ionization continuum.

Equivalence of the Kobrak–Rice photoselective adiabatic passage and the Brumer–Shapiro strong field methods for control of product formation in a reaction

Mark N. Kobrak, Stuart A. Rice

It is shown that the photoselective adiabatic passage approach to control of product formation in a chemical reaction proposed by Kobrak and Rice may be viewed as a high-field limit of the strong field Brumer–Shapiro scheme. It is further shown that the adiabatic passage representation provides new insight into the nature of control over chemical reactions in strong fields, and that it correctly predicts the results of physically realistic simulations of the sodium dimer.

Induced multiphoton adiabatic passage and coherent control of population transfer in quantum systems with high-energy transitions

H. K. Avetissian, Alex Brown, G. F. Mkrtchian

A scheme for coherent population transfer via four quantum states in atomic or molecular systems of high-energy transitions by induced multiphoton adiabatic passage (IMAP) is proposed. The nonperturbative multiphoton resonant theory of interaction of such quantum systems with the two strong laser fields of different frequencies is developed and the possibility of coherent control of population in high-energy quantum structures by IMAP is shown.
