Dynamical formation of the Bose polaron through impurity-bath decoherence

Abstract

We study the quantum dynamics of a single impurity following its sudden immersion into a Bose-Einstein condensate. The formation of the Bose polaron after such a quench stems from decoherence of the impurity, driven by collisions with the condensate. Using a master equation approach, we derive rigorous analytical results for the decoherence dynamics of the impurity, which reveals different stages of its evolution from a universal non-exponential initial relaxation to the final approach of the equilibrium state of the Bose polaron. The associated polaron formation time exhibit a strong dependence of the impurity momentum and is found to undergo a critical slowdown around the Landau critical velocity of the condensate. The rich non-equilibrium behavior of quantum impurities in a Bose gas revealed in this work is of direct relevance to recent cold-atom experiments, in which Bose polarons are created by a sudden quench of the impurity-bath interaction.

Critical slowdown of non-equilibrium polaron dynamics

We study the quantum dynamics of a single impurity following its sudden immersion into a Bose–Einstein condensate. The ensuing formation of the Bose polaron in this general setting can be seen as impurity decoherence driven by the condensate, which we describe within a master equation approach. We derive rigorous analytical results for this decoherence dynamics, and thereby reveal distinct stages of its evolution from a universal stretched exponential initial relaxation to the final approach to equilibrium. The associated polaron formation time exhibits a strong dependence on the impurity speed and is found to undergo a critical slowdown around the speed of sound of the condensate. This rich non-equilibrium behavior of quantum impurities is of direct relevance to recent cold atom experiments, in which Bose polarons are created by a sudden quench of the impurity-bath interaction.

Dynamics of polaron formation in 1D Bose gases in the strong-coupling regime

Martin Will, Michael Fleischhauer

Abstract We discuss the dynamics of the formation of a Bose polaron when an impurity is injected into a weakly interacting one-dimensional Bose condensate. While for small impurity-boson couplings this process can be described within the Froehlich model as generation, emission and binding of Bogoliubov phonons, this is no longer adequate if the coupling becomes strong. To treat this regime we consider a mean-field approach beyond the Froehlich model which accounts for the backaction to the condensate, complemented with Truncated Wigner simulations to include quantum fluctuation. For the stationary polaron we find a periodic energy-momentum relation and non-monotonous relation between impurity velocity and polaron momentum including regions of negative impurity velocity. Studying the polaron formation after turning on the impurity-boson coupling quasi-adiabatically and in a sudden quench, we find a very rich scenario of dynamical regimes. Due to the build-up of an effective mass, the impurity is slowed down even if its initial velocity is below the Landau critical value. For larger initial velocities we find deceleration and even backscattering caused by emission of density waves or grey solitons and subsequent formation of stationary polaron states in different momentum sectors. In order to analyze the effect of quantum fluctuations we consider a trapped condensate to avoid 1D infrared divergencies. Using Truncated Wigner simulations in this case we show under what conditions the influence of quantum fluctuations is small.

Non-equilibrium dynamics of dipolar polarons

Artem G. Volosniev, Giacomo Bighin, Luis Santos +1 more

We study the out-of-equilibrium quantum dynamics of dipolar polarons, i.e., impurities immersed in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate, after a quench of the impurity-boson interaction. We show that the dipolar nature of the condensate and of the impurity results in anisotropic relaxation dynamics, in particular, anisotropic dressing of the polaron. More relevantly for cold-atom setups, quench dynamics is strongly affected by the interplay between dipolar anisotropy and trap geometry. Our findings pave the way for simulating impurities in anisotropic media utilizing experiments with dipolar mixtures.

Dynamical formation of polarons in a Bose-Einstein condensate: A variational approach

Luis A. Peña Ardila

We investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of an impurity coupled to a Bose-Einstein condensate, systematically compared with recent experimental results [M. G. Skou et al., Nat. Phys. (2021)]. The dynamics of the impurity is tracked down by using a time-dependent variational coherent ansatz. For weak coupling between the impurity and the bath, analytical expressions for the time-dependent contrast are derived, matching quite well with previous findings obtained within a master equation approach. For strong coupling instead, the variational ansatz provides a good quantitative description of the polaron dynamics, in particular, in signaling the transition from the few- to the many-body correlated regime where polarons are expected to form.

Non-equilibrium quantum dynamics and formation of the Bose polaron

Magnus G. Skou, Thomas G. Skov, Nils B. Jørgensen +5 more

Advancing our understanding of non-equilibrium phenomena in quantum many-body systems remains one of the greatest challenges in physics. Here we report on the experimental observation of a paradigmatic many-body problem, namely the non-equilibrium dynamics of a quantum impurity immersed in a bosonic environment1,2. We use an interferometric technique to prepare coherent superposition states of atoms in a Bose–Einstein condensate with a small impurity-state component, and monitor the evolution of such quantum superpositions into polaronic quasiparticles. These results offer a systematic picture of polaron formation3–7 from weak to strong impurity interactions. They reveal three distinct regimes of evolution with dynamical transitions that provide a link between few-body processes and many-body dynamics. Our measurements reveal universal dynamical behaviour in interacting many-body systems and demonstrate new pathways to study non-equilibrium quantum phenomena. Quantum impurities immersed in a bosonic environment can evolve into polaronic quasiparticles, so-called polarons. Interferometric measurement reveals this transition, which involves three different regimes dominated by few-body and many-body dynamics.
