Abstract

Recent experimental advances in creating stable dipolar systems, including polar molecules with large electric dipole moments, have led to vigorous theoretical activities. Here we discuss our work on homogeneous 2D dipolar bosons with dipoles oriented at an angle to the direction perpendicular to the confining 2D plane, i.e. for non-zero tilt angles. Using Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we obtain T=0 excitation spectrum of the dipolar Bose gas, and explore instabilities at varying tilt angle, density and dipolar coupling. We map out a phase diagram a function of tilt angle, dipole strength and density. We find the development of maxon-roton behavior leading to roton instabilities at large densities for small tilt angles, and at low densities for large tilt angles. The behavior is anisotropic in k-space; accordingly the roton instabilities occur in the k y direction, suggestive of inhomogeneity and stripe phase, with density mode becoming soft in the y direction. Our results compare favorably with existing Quantum Monte Carlo calculations for non-zero tilt angles.

Properties of 2D and Quasi-2D Dipolar Bosons with Non-zero Tilt Angles at T=0

Pengtao Shen, Khandker Quader

Recent experimental advances in creating stable dipolar bosonic systems, including polar molecules with large electric dipole moments, have led to vigorous theoretical activities. Recent reporting of observation of roton feature in dipolar erbium has provided added impetus to theoretical and experimental work. Here we discuss our mean-field theory work on 2D and quasi-2D dipolar bosons with dipoles oriented at an angle to the direction perpendicular to the confining 2D plane, i.e. for {\it non-zero tilt angles}. Using Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we present results on a number of T=0 properties of both 2D and quasi-2D systems, such as excitation spectra, structure functions, sound velocities, quantum depletion, etc. We explore instabilities at varying tilt angle, density and dipolar coupling. We map out phase diagrams as a function of tilt angle, dipole strength and density. We find the development of maxon-roton behavior leading to roton instabilities at large densities for small tilt angles, and at low densities for large tilt angles. The behavior is anisotropic in k-space; accordingly the roton instabilities occur first in the $k_y$ direction, suggestive of inhomogeneity and stripe phase, with density mode becoming soft in the $y$-direction. Beyond a critical tilt angle, at any density, the dipolar system collapses owing to a phonon instability. We discuss similarities and differences between the properties of 2D and quasi-2D dipolar systems at non-zero tilt angles.

Finite-temperature instabilities of a two-dimensional dipolar Bose gas at arbitrary tilt angle

Pengtao Shen, Khandker Quader

Advances in creating stable dipolar Bose systems and ingenious box traps have generated great interest in the field of cold bosons. Theory study of dipolar bosons at finite temperature $T$ has been limited. We study two-dimensional dipolar bosons at arbitrary tilt angle $\ensuremath{\theta}$ using finite-$T$ random phase approximation. We show that a comprehensive understanding of phases and instabilities at nonzero $T$ can be obtained by concurrently considering dipole strength, density, temperature, and $\ensuremath{\theta}$. We find the system to be in a homogeneous noncondensed phase that undergoes a collapse transition at large $\ensuremath{\theta}$, and a finite momentum instability, signaling a striped phase, at large dipolar strength; there are important differences from the $T=0$ case. As $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0$, a Bose-condensed phase appears at critical dipolar strength, and at critical density. Our predictions for a polar molecule system, $^{41}\mathrm{K}^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$, and $^{166}\mathrm{Er}$ may provide tests of our results.

Excitations and Stripe Phase Formation in a Two-Dimensional Dipolar Bose Gas with Tilted Polarization

A. Macia, Diana Hufnagl, Ferran Mazzanti +2 more

We present calculations of the ground state and excitations of an anisotropic dipolar Bose gas in two dimensions, realized by a nonperpendicular polarization with respect to the system plane. For sufficiently high density, an increase of the polarization angle leads to a density instability of the gas phase in the direction where the anisotropic interaction is strongest. Using a dynamic many-body theory, we calculate the dynamic structure function in the gas phase which shows the anisotropic dispersion of the excitations. We find that the energy of roton excitations in the strongly interacting direction decreases with increasing polarization angle and almost vanishes close to the instability. Exact path integral ground state Monte Carlo simulations show that this instability is indeed a quantum phase transition to a stripe phase, characterized by long-range order in the strongly interacting direction.

Phase diagram of dipolar bosons in two dimensions with tilted polarization

A. Macia, Jordi Boronat, Ferran Mazzanti

We analyze the ground state of a system of dipolar bosons moving in the $XY$ plane and such that their dipolar moments are all aligned in a fixed direction in space. We focus on the general case where the polarization field forms a generic angle $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ with respect to the $Z$ axis. We use the path-integral ground-state method to analyze the static properties of the system as both $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ and the density $n$ vary over a wide range where the system is stable. We use the maximum of the static structure function as an order parameter to characterize the different phases and the transition lines among them. We find that, in addition to a superfluid gas and a solid phase, the system reaches a stripe phase at large tilting angles that is entirely induced by the anisotropic character of the interaction. We also show that the quantum phase transition from the gas to the stripe phase is of second order and report approximate values for the critical exponents.

Ground states of two-dimensional tilted dipolar bosons with density-induced hopping

Chao Zhang, Jin Zhang, Jin Yang +1 more

Motivated by recent experiments with ultracold magnetic atoms trapped in optical lattices where the orientation of atomic dipoles can be fully controlled by external fields, we study, by means of quantum Monte Carlo, the ground-state properties of dipolar bosons trapped in a two-dimensional lattice with density-induced hopping and where the dipoles are tilted along the $xz$ plane. We present ground-state phase diagrams of the above system at different tilt angles. We find that as the dipolar interaction increases, the superfluid phase at half-filling factor is destroyed in favor of either a checkerboard or stripe solid phase for tilt angle $\ensuremath{\theta}\ensuremath{\lesssim}{30}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$ or $\ensuremath{\theta}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}{30}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$, respectively. More interesting physics happens at tilt angles $\ensuremath{\theta}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}{58}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$, where we find that as the dipolar interaction strength increases, solid phases first appear at filling factor lower than 0.5. Moreover, unlike what is observed at lower tilt angles, we find that at half filling, a stripe supersolid intervenes between the superfluid and stripe solid phase.

Breaking of scale invariance in a strongly dipolar 2D Bose gas

Haoting Zhen, Yifei He, Saha, Sampriti +4 more

Two-dimensional (2D) dipolar atomic gases present unique opportunities for exploring novel quantum phases due to their anisotropic and long-range interactions. However, the behavior of strongly dipolar Bose gases in 2D remains unclear, especially when dipoles are tilted. Here, we demonstrate the creation and characterization of strongly dipolar 2D condensates in a quasi-2D harmonic trap with tunable dipole orientation. By investigating scale invariance properties through breathing collective mode measurements, we observe significant breaking of scale invariance when dipoles are tilted in-plane indicating the dominance of the nonlocal dipole-dipole interactions (DDIs) in this regime. Interestingly, the breaking of the scale invariant dynamics is accompanied by an increase in quantum fluctuations, as shown by comparison with mean-field and beyond mean-field theoretical studies. Our experiments also reveal that at critical tilt angles around 70°, stripe-type density modulations emerge, suggesting the presence of a roton spectrum in 2D, while the system still shows hydrodynamic nature with the phase-locking breathing behavior. This observation elucidates the many-body effect induced by DDIs in 2D, thus marking a crucial step toward realizing 2D supersolids and other exotic quantum phases.
